A beautiful cellist of Busan / Prof. Ukjin Yang of Inje University
Dreaming of music city in harmony with the sea
Vision of the Korean music industry that can compete with the world
A world renowned cellist's choice, Busan

If you like classical music, you might know Korea's master cellist professor Jaepyeo Yang. Like his father, the son Ukjin Yang is a globally renowned cellist. When asked how he played the cello, he said that he grew up by listening to the instrument as both his parents are cellists. He added that he thought that everybody would play cello when he was a child.

If you meet him, you can certainly feel his innocence and passion in music. He is also a devoted lover of Busan and says "I just like Busan and I like the simple response from people in Busan." Yang was born in Seoul, studied at Juilliard School of Music and Mannes College of Music and obtained a PhD from Stony Brook University/The State University of New York. As you can see, he actually has nothing to do with Busan until he drove down to the city with his friend by chance one day in 2007.

The cellist who loves Busan more than the citizens
Yang was impressed by the sea spreading before him and simple and explosive response to his performance from the people in Busan. He decided to move to the city but the problem was how to persuade his wife and children but he came up with a brilliant idea. He took time off and did not eat and wash while he grew a bead on his chin which is his trademark. Deeply worried about his husband's devastated appearance, his wife and children eventually crossed to Busan from the US. Yang says "I've travelled a lot around the world but I found Busan is second to none. Generally speaking, where there is beautiful sea, there follows music and art. I hope Busan will be as such." Yang regrets the fact that the city is much ignored when it comes to classical music and he attributes it to musicians. He continues "how can we expect normal people just naturally like classical music? People need to be provided a chance to listen first and then they will start to get interested and this will eventually lead to over all development of music culture in the city." For this reason, he formed a Busan Chamber Orchestra called IPB (International Players of Busan). IPB is consisted of young musicians who love Busan dearly. Interesting enough that the orchestra has no conductor and concert master and this is because they want to create music in the way they want without any conventional interference. Yang says "musicians are most happy when they play the music they want and by doing that the music becomes alive and the performer's feeling is directly delivered to the audience." Regarding ticket price, he maintains the range around $10 to $20 so that people can enjoy without financial burdens. He even makes concert posters himself (except printing) with his wit and brilliant idea such as a baker on working, a shopper putting music in a shopping cart, a baristar serving music in a coffee shop and a tractor driver giving a ride to music. This is all because he loves Busan so much.

Dreaming of music city and spreading classical music
The purpose of IPB is to give concert only in Busan so that they can disperse Seoul centered classical music culture but to invite both musicians and audience to Busan also. They invited Tomo Keller of London Symphony Orchestra, Andreas Buschatz of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Tomasz Tomaszewski of Deutsche Oper Orchestra as guest concert masters in 2012. These concerts became the talk of the town and 100 audience from Seoul came down to Busan to see each concert as a result. The concert masters were also impressed by Yang's passion and willingly accepted his invitation which in fact was almost impossible. But his passion and wit never stopped there. He invited Byeongsu Suh, the Mayor of Busan as a commentator of Carnival of the Animals which was to be performed at 'Dureraum Chamber Music Festival' in August 2014. Suh was to give commentary in each movement between 14 movements such as lion, hen and turtle which were depicted humorously during a 25 minute long performance. Saint-Saëns'a Carnival of the Animals actually is famous for commentary by celebrities such as Roger Moore (007) and former US president George W. Bush. When Yang performed this song at Juilliard School of Music in 1994, New York City Mayor Giuliani took the commentary and they received an explosive response from both players and audience. Yang wrote this story to Busan City Mayor with the condition that he should enter the concert hall through back door and he eventually received a positive answer from the mayor after 2 weeks. This is a clear demonstration that the passion of a musician can have the power to involve a mayor and global conductors to a city.
His love of Busan is his conviction about the city
With the synergy effect of a passionate musician and an open minded mayor, the city is currently busy building an opera house. In fact, those global opera houses in Oslo, Copenhagen and Sydney are all bordering the sea like Busan. Popularizing classical music largely depends on the responsibility of musicians like Yang said but also locational factor can play a significant role. Traditionally, citizens of Busan had to travel up to Seoul to appreciate music masters not to mention lack of cultural facilities and awareness. Therefore, building an opera house in the city is more than welcome. Yangs says "Busan actually has a global level competitiveness. I hope more and more people recognize and cherish this so that we together can create a city where music and art proliferate." Yang certainly seems to love Busan more than the natives and I guess that his love of Busan might come from his conviction about the city. In fact, I think I can say he is a musical maestro of Korea over Busan because if the city is to be a city of music and art, this will directly be connected to developments of the music industry of the country. He is treasure and pride of Busan and I hope to see his first performance at the opera house when it is open.
