아름다운 하모니, 합창으로 풀어내는 주부들의 삶

여자는 결혼을 하면서 세가지 호칭으로 불리게 된다.
마누라, 엄마, 며느리.. 그러면 어느세 결혼 전의 ‘나’는 없어지고 오히려 혼자인 자신이 낯설게 느껴질 때가 있다. 집안 일과 아이 돌보느라 거칠어진 손과 얼굴을 보며 결혼 전에 아름답고 당당했던 나를 생각하면, 그때로 돌아가고 싶다는 생각을 주부라면 누구나 한번쯤은 다 해 보았을 것이다. 하지만 주부가 된 이상 완벽히 솔로 시절로 돌아가기란 불가능한 일, 그러나 주부로써의 고단한 삶 속에서 오직 “나만을” 위해 할 수 있는 일이 있다면, 또 “나”를 찾을 수 있는 일이 있다면 어떤 것이 있을까?

매주 목요일 오전 10시, 센텀파크 주민센터에서는 주부들의 아름다운 노래 소리가 울려 퍼진다. 바로 부산의 최고 아마추어 합창단으로 정평이 나 있는 센텀 합창단의 소리이다. 
30대부터 60대 주부들로 이루어진 센텀합창단이 창단 된 것은 벌써 횟수로 9년 전 일이다. 

그 사이 매년 10월 말에 있는 부산합창제에 꾸준히 참여 해 왔다.  8년간 총무로 일해 오다 올해 센텀합창단의 3대 단장으로 취임한 이명숙 단장은 센텀합창단의 초기 멤버이자 9년간 묵묵히 자리를 지켜 온 터주대감이다.

“합창을 하다 보면 마음이 차분해 지고, 밖에서 어려웠던 일로 인해 어지러워진 마음을 정리할 수 있어서 좋아요. 그렇게 새롭게 충전하고 다시 일주일을 살고 하는 거죠.” 
그렇게 말하는 그녀는 무려 8년 동안 두 번밖에 결석하지 않았을 정도로 늘 그 자리를 지켜온 성실함의 대가였다. 하지만 그녀도 처음에는 악보도 제대로 못봤었다고 하며 합창은 전공자만 하는게 아니라 서로의 소리에 의지해 조금만 연습을 하면 모두가 할 수 있는 활동이라고 말한다. 

센텀합창단의 유일한 청일점, 지휘자 이칠성
초창기 때 부터 9년간 센텀합창단을 이끌어 온 큰 동력에는 이칠성 지휘자를 빼 놓을 수 없다. 그는 부산대학교 예술대학 음악학과를 졸업 하여 이태리 밀라노 베르디 국립음악원을 거쳐 이태리 손드리오 오페라 아카데미를 졸업하고, 그후 오스트리아 짤츠부르그 여름아카데미를 수료, 이태리 엔리소 카루소 국제 콩쿨에서 동양인 처음으로 우승을 거머쥐었다. 이후 이태리 베니아미노 질리 국제 콩쿨에서 3위를 입상하였고, 국제 콩쿨에서도 7회를 입상하였으며 현재는 동의대학교에 출강하며, 센텀합창단을 지휘하고 있다. 

“음악은 쉼과 같습니다. 음악을 하는 순간은 모든 것을 잊고 새로운 활력을 얻는 시간이지요, 노래를 하면 실제로 세라토닌이 1000배 가까이 나온다고 하잖아요. 실제로 저항력이 강해지고 긍정적인 마음이 생겨서 합창단 활동을 하며 우울증이나 병을 치료하신 분들도 계세요.”

그렇다, 왜 요즘 우울증에 걸리는 주부들이 많겠는가? 이칠성 지휘자는 말한다. 
“주부의 삶을 보세요. 자기 이름이 없잖아요. 여자로써 자기만을 위해 할 수 있는 일이 있습니까? 합창하시는 주부님들이 자기가 입을 무대 의상을 두고 소녀처럼 신나하며 살피고 고르는 모습을 보면 가끔씩 마음이 찡합니다. “ 라고 말하는 그는 센텀합창단의 지휘를 하며 합창을 통해 자신을 다시 발견하고, 우울증이나 병도 낫고 밝아지는 주부님들의 모습을 볼 때가 가장 보람이 된다고. 

처음에는 센텀아파트 단지 안에 있는 주부들만 모여 시작했지만 이제 센텀합창단은 부산 전역에 소문이 나서 다른 구에서도 주부들이 찾아온다고 한다. 실제로 합창단에 들어와 연습을 하면서 노래를 하다가 이유 없이 눈물을 터트리는 사람도 있고 그런 모습을 보며 서로가 감동을 받고 힘을 얻는다는 얘기도. 또 그런 것이 힘이 되고 동력이 되어 지금까지 지휘를 계속 이어 올 수 있었다고 말하는 이칠성 지휘자는 이 일에 대해 진심으로 감사와 보람을 느끼는 것 같았다.

“프로의 세계는 경쟁의 구도잖아요. 하지만 이곳에서 하는 음악은 나눔과 삶입니다. 모두가 편안한 마음으로 노래하며 음악을 있는 그대로 즐기면서 할 수가 있어요. 합창을 할 때 어우러지는 화음을 통해 자신의 삶을 투영해 볼 수도 있고, 하모니가 주는 하나 됨은 아이들에게도 좋은 교육이 될 수 있습니다.”

지역의 성장은 시민들 개개인의 삶의 질이 높아져야
센텀합창단은 10월에 있는 합창제 외에 다른 합창 봉사 활동도 많이 하고 있다. 
소양 보육원 기금마련 콘서트, 해운대 백병원의 “찾아가는 음악회” 연주 봉사 
2014년 마루국제음악제, 프린지 콘서트 연주회 등 많은 곳에서 활발한 봉사활동을 하며 
2013년 11월에는 “오륙도 문화 예술 축제” 합창부문에서 대상을 수상하기도 했다. 

“외국에서는 마을 단위의 축제가 많습니다. 결국 그 마을에 사는 사람들이 스스로 즐기고 누릴 것이 있어야 합니다. 이렇게 시민들의 참여도를 끌어 올려야 그 지역이 살고 도시가 살아 나는게 아니겠습니까?” 
모든 것이 돈으로 돌아가는 경제 구도에서 시민들이 자발적으로 참여하는 문화의 중요성을 깨닫지 못한 체 지역의 활성화를 위해 관 중심의 전시행정과 같은 개발만을 계속 한다면 결국 그 지역의 진짜 발전과 성장은 기대 하기 어려울 것이라는 그의 말에는 일리가 있다. 

그러기 위해선 부산 문화재단이 좀 더 세분화된 업무처리로 아마추어 시민단체들을 돌아 보고 지원을 해 주어야 한다는 것이 그의 설명이다. 
지역의 성장은 그 지역에 사는 시민들 각 개인의 생활과 삶의 질이 높아 질 때 비로소 진정한 발전을 기대할 수 있지 않을까? 그것이 꼭 돈이 많아야만 가능한 것은 아니다. 이 어려운 시대를 살아가는 사람들에게 한번쯤은 자신을 돌아보게 할 수 있는 시간들이 필요하다. 그러려면 자발적인 시민단체들이 활성화 되고, 이들이 활동할 수 있는 도시의 환경과 여건들이 많이 마련되어야 한다. 갈수록 어려워지는 경기 침체와 불황으로 자기 자신 마저 잊고 늘 가사를 걱정하며 살아 갈 수 밖에 없는 팍팍한 주부들의 삶에 비상구가 되어주는 센텀합창단 처럼 말이다. 현실에만 굳어 있지 않고 스스로 자기 자신을 찾아 노래로 화음으로 합창을 만들어 내는 센텀합창단 주부님들과 이명숙 단장님, 이칠성 지휘자께 큰 박수를 보내고 싶다.

Centum Choir, the best housewives' choir of Busan
Beautiful harmony that disentangles the threads of housewives' lives
At 11 a.m. on every Thursday morning, a beautiful harmony of housewives is heard from Centum Park Community Center. It is the voice of the best known amateur chorus called Centum Choir. The Choir was formed 9 years ago consisting of housewives aged between 30s and 60s. They have been participating in Busan Choral Festival & Competition every October except twice. The Leader Meyongsook Lee used to work as a secretary of the Choir but recently was elected as the 3rd leader. She is one of the founding members and has devoted herself to the Choir for 9 years. She never missed one day of the Choir for 8 years and says "I become calm when I sing with others and I can also clear up my mind. Thus I recharge myself and start the week." However, she confessed that she could not even know how to read sheet music when she first joined but became convinced that everybody can do it with a little bit of practice. 

Conductor Chilsung Lee, the only man of Centum Choir
Lee has been the driving force of the Choir for 9 years. He received a degree in Music at Busan National University, graduated from Conservatorio di G. Verdi di Milano and Sondrio Opera Academy in Italy, completed a course at St. Petersburg Summer Academy in Austria, and won the first prize at Enrico Caruso International Music Competition Italy for the first time as an Asian. He then won the third place at Beniamino Gigli International Music Competetion Italy and was among the winners 7 times at various other international competitions. He is currently a lecturer at Busan National University and conducting in Centum Choir. Lee says "music is like a rest. It is a time to forget everything and to revitalize oneself. It is a fact that singing produces 1,000 times more serotonin. Some people actually cured depression and diseases." It is true that many housewives are suffering from depression nowadays. Lee continues "look at housewives' lives. They don't have their name. Do they live their life? I'm touched by seeing them happy like a girl when they are wearing the stage custom. And I feel really worth when they become themselves once again or overcome depression and diseases through singing." The Choir actually started with the housewives living in Centum Apartment Complex only but has become now a municipal level choir. Lee has observed that some members burst into tears in the middle of singing which then was followed by other members sympathy and encouragement, and this also became his driving force to lead the choir with much gratitude and worthiness. Lee says "professional world is rather competitive. But music here means sharing. Everybody can enjoy music in peaceful mind. You can reflect your life through creating harmony with others and the oneness the harmony provides can also be a good educational source for children." 

Improving the quality of one's life leads to creating a better community
Apart from participating Choral Festival & Competition in every October, Centum Choir is carrying out various voluntary services. They actively involved in 'Fund Raising Concert for Soyang Orphanage', 'Itinerant Concert of Haeundae Paik Hospital', '2014 Maru International Music Festival' and 'Fringe Concert' and they also won the Grand Prize in the chorus sector at 'Oryukdo Culture & Art Festival' in November 2013. Lee added "overseas countries hold a lot of village level festivals. It means that the villagers have to find their own entertainment. Attracting residents' participation can revive the region and also the city at the end." It is true that we cannot expect a proper development of a region by a mere display  from administrative authorities but the citizen's active participation and Busan Cultural Foundation's unsparing support for civic groups.

A true development of a region can only be achieved when each citizen's quality of life is improved. And it does not take a lot of budget to achieve it but by activation of civic groups with good and ideal environments being backed up systematically. In that terms, Centum Choir is a good example which is providing an emergency exit for worn-out housewives. I would like to applaud the choir for finding who they are through creating beautiful harmony. I firmly believe that the sound and voice of Centum Choir will enrich the lives of Busan citizens.
