A woman leader in the global industry of instrumentation
Yoon Yeong-sang, president of Eagle Process Controls Korea Ltd.

Eagle Process Controls Korea started in 1981 as the Korean branch of a company which imported and sold fisher control products. Now the company has become a leader in comprehensive instrumentation field delivering products for numerous projects at home and abroad and even giving technical support if necessary. Its fast growth was made possible as many power plants were built in this country with a booming economic development in the 1980’s.

With the knowhow and confidence piled up at that time, Eagle Process is acting as a good business partner when a domestic large enterprise receives orders from overseas for plant equipment. We met president Yoon Yeong-sang, a domestic leader in instrumentation industry, which used to be a man’s exclusive possession, to hear the story about her success in business so far.

From a mere clerk to a CEO

President Yoon, who had graduated from Ewha Girls’ High and then Ewha Women’s University as a major of English language and literature, joined a foreign bank but didn’t feel pleased with the kind of work she was doing. Led by an advertisement she happened to see, she left the job and entered as the first Korean worker for Eagle Process. Though the situation is the same for now, then there was no woman worker in such an industry and President Yoon was almost the only woman there. Eagle Process was responsible for the whole quantity of control valves for Yeonggwang nuclear power plant which she visited as a woman for the first time in the plant’s history. “I had to put on protective clothing but there was none left for a woman. So I put on the smallest size of clothes. So much there were no women workers not only in the field of instrumentation but also in most heavy industries,” recollected president Yoon. Feeling confident about herself after working for a dozen year, president Yoon took over the Korean branch of Eagle Process by persuasion of the company president who was returning to the US in 1994 after resignation and took office as the CEO. Then she finished registering for a Korean firm with ‘Eagles Process Controls Korea.’

Built up into a global leader in instrumentation industry

The flagship products of Eagle Process Controls Korea are measuring instruments and valves. For example, in the process of refining the crude oil at oil refinery, there are every kind of storage tanks, passages that connect between tanks, and the measuring instruments that check the temperature, pressure, level, etc. between them all. Besides, by automation system, valves are opened or shut according to the temperature, pressure, etc. This is a field that requires high technology and knowhow since the smallest error can lead to a large-scale accidents. President Yoon with 10 years’ experience as staff and 20 years’ as CEO has built up into a leading company in instrumentation industry by adding a woman’s delicate sensitivity to her career.

Besides, 50% of the staff has been together since foundation of the Korean corporation in 1994. Especially, staff in technical post receives training from the head office each time a new product comes out and delivers the knowhow piled up for the past 20 years to new employees. In case a problem occurs, Eagle Process Controls Korea resolves it by giving technical support immediately. President Yoon said, “I am proud to say that the company’s confidence is the best in the industry because we ourselves cope with every after-sale service when it is needed.” The head office which produces products also recognized president Yoon’s capability by selecting this Korean branch for ‘Clark Reliance excellent agency,’ ‘Magnetrol Excellent Representative,’ ‘ASCO Best AVD,’ and ‘Brightest Star award from Cashco.’

President Yoon declared that she had received many proposals to develop and manufacture products on her own. It is because importing only core parts and establishing a factory in China with accumulated knowhow should be able to lower the unit cost and make excellent products. However, president Yoon says she would prefer to do the current business more stably and persistently rather than play for heavy stakes. It was probably because of this management philosophy that she was able to overcome IMF crisis.

Incessant efforts for the country and youth

Besides doing business, president Yoon is looking around and making efforts to practice sharing. Engaging in diverse activities with the staff for helping the youth who are in charge of their families at Samsung-dong, the company’s location, she is taking the lead in publicizing Dokdo domestically and internationally as vice president of Dokdo Central League.

By the influence of her father, who had been the third batch of the Marine Corps, she has been treating dinner to US Marine veterans who entered the Korean War at Samcheonggak in June every year since 2006. She also enlisted her son, who had been sent to the US to study, in the Marine Corps thinking that becoming a marine is the way for the homeland. This has a suggestion for the youth of our country. Besides, she is lending a hand to the youth of North Korea who are starving. Donating trucks, she is supporting instructions, including driving, so that they may earn their own livelihood.

We give a big hand to her endurance through which she has challenged and become the best in the field of men’s exclusive possession throwing off the social limitations and her patriotism for the country and youth.
