Independence activist of the month : Suheung Lee (1905. 9. 11. ~ 1929. 2. 27)

A short young man strikes terror into Japanese heart
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Korea Liberation Association, and Independence Hall chose Suheung Lee as the independence activist of the month. Lee was born in Changjeon-ri, Eumnae-Myeon, Ichon County, Gyeonggi Province. His father was Ilyoung Lee, belonged to Yeonan family, and was a descendent of Gon Lee who became Prince Yeonseong on the benefit of his political contribution in Restoration of King Jungjong, and was 10th generation of Sik Lee. The latter one was a scholar born in Icheon, served as chief in various places, and was a teacher of King Youngjo. Confucian scholars built shrine in remembrance of him after he died. Suheung Lee studied at Icheon public school and dropped out of school when he was 13 and went into a mountain to be a monk when 14. He came back to the world on his father's force when 18 and crossed into Manchuria when 19 in March 1923. He is presumed to be active in Shinyeong School built by General Kim Chwa-chin in Jilin Province. Korea Tonguibu was formed on 30 August in 1922 in Manchuria around that time and the group who were discordant with the organization separated and established Uigunbu in February 1923. According to Lee's trial record, he joined in Korea Tonguibu in July 1923 and started to engage in armed struggle. He also joined in Chamuibu which actively did advancing operations to Korea but lost a considerable number of their force by Japanese' surprise attack in 1925. When the activities of Independence Army was withered, he crossed into Korea in May 1926 in an attempt to punish high officials of Japanese General Government in Seoul. He sneaked in Gyeongseong through Pyeongsan in the character of a special soldier of The Second Company and engaged in gunfight with Japanese police at Donsomun Police Station. He punished the son of a rich family in Anseong to create fund for Independence Army and attacked Icheon Hyeonbang Police Station and Baeksa Town Office. The Japanese police got the hint that he was rather a short young man and launched an investigation with 3,000 staff. Lee eventually was arrested after a tip-off from one of his colleagues, sentenced to death and died in 1929. The Korean government conferred Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal to Lee in 1962.

Korean War hero of the month : the female general of Kuwol Mountain Jungsook Lee
Lee is the first woman chosen as a Korean War hero of the month. Her operation as a guerrilla was made into a movie called 'Bloody Kuwol Mountain (1965)' and into a manga called 'Kuwol Mountain Guerrilla' by Wooyoung Ko. Lee was born in Hamhung in February 1922 but lost her parents and husband by the Communist Army before Korean War. She was put into prison, escaped, formed Seoha Armed Force in October 1950 in Anak County, Hwanghae Province, commanded 70 armed forces and farmers, and fought against the Communist Army. Kuwol Mountain Guerrilla was called Donkey The Second Army. It was formed by Captain Jongbyeok Kim on 7 December 1950 by gathering scattered voluntary armies including Yeonpoong Army. It was started with only 150 and the number was significantly increased when evacuees joined in. After joining Kuwol Mountain Guerrilla, Lee took the aide role to the captain and made a significant contribution. She particularly contributed to saving 89 soldiers of Jaeryeong Guerrilla by getting through the energy territories in disguise as a country woman crossing 40km on foot. She also participated in landing operations at Wolsari Peninsular and Eoyang-ri area. Her contribution made her gain the nickname 'The Female General of Kuwol Mountain'. She was rewarded a citation from the Army Chief of Staff and her operations were in the middle school textbook in the 60s.
