The future of Korean economy from an artistic view of global business leader
Wide view and sense of global management make his artistic composition where the emotion of the vast, nature resides
- Suk-Jean Kang, chairman of Korea Professional Management Academy,
painter and poet

Kang became a vice president of a US investment finance company in New York and managed Asian regional investment projects when he was 30. He then worked for GE for 27 years with 21 year as the CEO of GE-Korea. Jack Welch, the former chairman of GE, who was well known as a legend of the advanced management, decided to use the GE-Korea businesses which was developed and managed by Kang as the model of globalization for whole GE businesses as he believed GE-Korea business was the most successful globalized business model. Kang is the one who made it possible. Kang has been sharing his advanced management knowledge and experiences for the Korean companies for long time. After he retired from GE, he has been very active as an artist, and as an invited professor of business school. He also  provided advise for the future direction of Korean economy. Power Korea has met Kang and learned about his management philosophy, the view of the world, and art.

Korea's advanced industry should be differentiated and rebuilt through future-oriented and knowledge productivity-based value creation management strategy
Based on his experience at GE, Kang has been doing academic researches at a university in the Netherlands for 6 years. He has studied on the leadership style building a knowledge-productive creative organization culture in order to maximize the value creation which is the final goal of management. A research paper of more than 250 pages, which will become a guideline for creative management, is at the final stage and Kang is in the spotlight among business circles and academic world. Like Korea's industrial development and advancement, which contributed for Korea's miraculous economic development, Kang emphasizes that the leaders of business have to build a knowledge productive organization culture as the top priority in order for Korean companies' sustainable future growth. In such people-oriented organizational culture, managements respect people in the organization and utilize their knowledge and ideas for managing businesses effectively through boundary-less open communications regardless their layers and positions.

It is time for Korean companies to focus on the development of differentiated new growth engine businesses to survive and grow in the global competition of the cutting-edge technology industry
The government and the society have to actively support this challenge
Continuous differentiated R&D strategy for the quality and the performance of cutting-edge technology products of Korea must be implemented in order to achieve sustainable economic growth. The Chinese manufacturing industries grown rapidly in technology and quality competitiveness. China is about to surpass Korean's main export industries such as car, mobile communication and ship building. Their basic sciences have already run ahead of Korea. Kang said that if Korea's cutting-edge technology export industries fall astern of Chinese, it will be almost impossible to recover. As the second largest economic country in the world, China for us is both the largest market and fierce competitor. Korean companies must build cooperative relationships with Chinese partners while the Korean leading companies in the global markets, must   develop differentiated topnotch products for maintaining "blue ocean" position beyond the price competition with Chinese products. For this, the leaders of major Korean companies must take high-challenging investment in R&D to develop future growth engine business which will lead the Korean export industries, and this must be backed up by the government policy. Also important is to create social environment respecting innovative and challenging entrepreneurial spirit as the current social climate in Korea is not easy for management compare to the advanced countries.

The most urgent problem to solve is upgrading weak R&D capabilities of those he vulnerable medium and small companies of Korea who supply high-tech components and materials to major leading companies who manufacture and export high technology products. If Korea miss the critical timing for resolving this problem, manufacturers of high-tech parts and materials in Korea will lose competitiveness and can be by-passed by Chinese competitors. And when that happens, major exporting high technology industries of Korea will face the most difficult situations to compete with other countries in the global markets.

The only choice to prevent this potential crisis is upgrading R&D capabilities and the quality and technology competitiveness of the small & medium companies to the world top level. This need strong supports of the government policy and the large corporations who have long term cooperative relations with those medium and small companies.

One of the President Park's election pledges was to make Korean small & medium size  companies in the high technology material and component industries the world leading manufacturers same as the 'Hidden Champion' of Germany. When Park visited Korea Employers' Federation one week before the inauguration, Kang strongly suggested to Park that the only way of building Korean Hidden Champion is utilizing all the national science research institutes in the Daedeok Science Park as R&D centers for the small & medium companies to upgrade to promote them as Korean Hidden Champions in short period of time. President Park noted Kang's suggestion carefully at the meeting. When she visited Daedeok Science Park in November 2013, she emphasized that the state funded science institutes have to play the role of R&D centers for building Korean small & medium companies in the high-tech business as Korean Hidden Champions. With the special news, Kang expected to see actual implementation of the commitment, however, still he did not see any information about the progress of making Korean hidden champions. Kang emphasized that we do not have much remaining time, and if it is not happening within a few years, the future of Korean export industry will not be in a good shape. To assure implementation of the most important President Park's commitment for making Korean Hidden Champions, the Blue House, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning must regularly check the progresses of actual joint R&D projects of national science institutes with small and medium companies. For the same purpose, the major leading companies must cooperate closely with those small and medium companies to upgrade their R&D capabilities and  quality competitiveness. Kang said that this is the true "accompanied growth" and co-prosperity of large companies with small and medium companies, as the case of hidden champions and large corporation in Germany.

Korea to push forward new growth engine for global management overcoming world economic depression
