Commercialization of developed technology is the key to growth for export-oriented enterprise

"Waste is valuable resource, compete by the patent for recycling polyol technology"
- Seho Tech CEO Chanhong Kang
Vehicles and fridges are high in waste ratio considering their weight. But they are regarded as reusable next generation resources. Kang succeeded to commercialize the polyurethane foam recycling technology through examination of the related techniques and data for the first time in the world. Seho Tech has grown to be a company that has technical innovation, promising prospect and eco-friendliness. Power Korea has learned the success story.

Born was the recycling polyol through unique and initiative technology
"I predicted a long time ago that the enterprises which create values from industrial waste would take the lead role. Seho Tech had been researching on reducing carbon dioxide emission created by incineration of the car waste even before the regulation of carbon emission was enacted." With the company motto of 'Only One and The First', Seho Tech has now had 50 clients over 37 countries and 90% of the sales come from overseas. It was established in 1986 and produces 12 kinds of polyurethane composite metallic catalyzers, sealant, rubber, silicone resins hardening catalyst and special organometallic catalyzers, and sells amine-catalysed TEDA which is used in polyurethane synthesis.

Seho Tech originally made urethane's chemical catalyst but started to make polyurethane foam, which is used as the insulator for vehicles and fridges, based on petrochemical waste, and eventually developed 'polyol'. Seho Tech invests 10% of their profit in R&D and is the only one company which has the patent for the polyol technology. The product has better quality and performance per price compared to the refined products and is steadily being exported to multinational companies in the world. "We make recycled polyol by separating and melting car interior materials and seats. Currently, we are producing 2,200 tons of polyol. There are several polyol producing companies. But the economical efficiency is our competitiveness. We don't need to worry about raw material supply for recycling polyol as we have plan to secure the interior materials from the petrochemical enterprises in Malaysia.

That's how we could have high quality and global level price competitiveness." Kang added that most products are for export and he is planning to build additional factories in Nangsan-myeon, Iksan city to satisfy the volume of orders.

Gaining trust from prestigious foreign companies with nontoxic catalyst
Seho Tech changed their market from domestic to overseas after they succeeded developing the polyurethane foam recycling polyol manufacturing technology, and making polyol from petrochemical waste recycles. Kang predicted $40m sales in 2015 as the second factory is running in full swing and is planning to achieve $100m within 5 years. "It is possible as the factory in Gimhae alone makes $20m sales. With our price competitiveness, we are doing our best to keep our status as the representative company in the field that has gained trust from overseas companies. That's why we are receiving orders from Nike, Adidas and Puma also." Seho Tech's popular product is nontoxic catalyst. They have 12 kinds of catalyst, and among them, 'EScat 100Ag-18KM' is a coating hardener for shoes leather and is most popular. It is harmless to human body and has excellent thermosetting property.

With the technical innovation fund from the Small and Medium Business Administration, Kang developed eco-friendly nontoxic TiN organic metallic catalysts in cooperation with Changwon National University's Chemical Engineering Department, and these catalysts satisfy the Environmental Standards of Europe. It is expected that Seho Tech's products will be popular among shoe making companies and the related buyers in the world. “The technology of using metal catalyst is our pride and we will lead the organic chemical industry to fulfill the needs of our customers." It is our pride that the Made in Korea-catalysts are being exported to Taiwan's ѪÌÔÙõæ¶, US's DOW Chemical, DOW Corning, and Huntsman, and Japan's Shinetsu Silicone. Seho Tech was awarded The Small and Medium Business Administration's Director's Prize, and chosen as a technology-intensive small and medium enterprise in Gimhae city. Seho Tech currently is running polyurethane system house.

Meanwhile, Seho Tech developed polyurethane special adhesive which is a new business item this year and it will be used by mixing with artificial stone resolvent for the ground of the street trees. The ground usually looks messy but Seho Tech will solve this problem.

Being a role model of management philosophy
Kang said that gaining trust from the clients is most important. "I have received a letter of appreciation from Taiwan's ѪÌÔÙõæ¶ for our consistency in supplying the products." Kang started the business in the name of Donga Chemistry and has now been running the business for 29 years and is satisfied with his company being technology-intensive venture enterprise. The secret of his success comes from 'Hardworking CEO'. "I never stop researching on the weak points of small and medium companies such as national level credibility, image improvement, human resource management and management know-how. Because we are export-oriented company, I think I, as CEO, should be the best human resource. I also try to supply our products at relatively cheaper price in the domestic market so that excellent Korean companies can also have competitiveness. If I want to achieve something bigger, I have to work together and cooperate." Kang's confidence in competitiveness comes from his more than 10 year experience of export, securing clients, and finding new buyers. "I have been active as a member of the advisory committee of KOTRA for 5 years. I have received a lot of help from KOTRA and I want to give it back to the business and the related officials." Kang wants to make a company which talented young people prefer to work and he is ready to make the second success story of Seho Tech with them through field experience, continuous investment in R&D, and global ambition. Power Korea wishes Seho Tech a smooth yet strong 2015.
