일필휘지의 순간으로 표현하는 회귀와 공존
“미술도 문화의 부류. 미술 계 지원이 국가적 차원에서 이루어지길”

“그림을 투자의 대상으로만 보지 말고, 자신이 좋아하는 그림을 소유하는 문화가 궁극적으로는 미술계의 호흡을 더욱 깊고 길게 만들어 줄 것이라 믿는다” 물 좋고 공기 맑은 첩첩산중에 틀어박혀 그림을 그리는 이인섭 화가는 이중생활을 한다. 그는 빽빽한 현실 속 도심으로 돌아오면 미술을 알리고 척박한 현실을 개선하는 미술행정가로 변신한다. 미술계를 향한 그의 애정 어린 충고와, 고즈넉한 그의 작품 세계관을 따로 또 같이 들여다본다. 

오랜 사유와 숙고를 일획으로 내달리는 이인섭 화가
강원도 양양의 한 작업실에서는 피조물들의 생로병사와 우주만물의 여명이 초월적 시간 속에서 색칠되어 간다. “내가 원하는 것은 손으로 그리는 그림이다. 디지털과 합성으로 소위 ‘만드는’ 그림이 아니다. 내 그림의 설명은 그림 속에 다 들어 있다” 이인섭 화가는 회귀, 인간 본연의 자체로 돌아가자는 모토로 화면의 밑그림 작업을 시작한다. 그의 밑그림은 많은 시간을 요한다. 반복되는 행위를 통하여 영원을 암시하듯 심혈을 기울여 화면에 한겹 한겹 생성의 대지를 표현한다. 하지만 정작 본 작업은 종일 정교하게 짠 베를 단번에 끊는 운명의 여신처럼 그의 방법론은 단호하다.

“문인화와 한국화에선 일필휘지(一筆揮之),기운생동(氣韻生動)을 노력의 척도로 친다. 그릴 때는 빨리 끝나지만 그것을 위한 사유와 숙고에는 보이지 않는 수많은 노력이 숨어 있다. 오래 걸리면 계속 다듬고 고치게 되어 처음의 순간적 기분을 담을 수가 없다” 평론에서 ‘일획으로 내달린 넓고 시원한 붓질’로 표현한 그의 작법은 서양의 미학과 동양의 관조를 동시에 담고 있다. 그래서 <회귀도回歸圖> 연작에서 회귀와 공존은 그의 그림에서 연오랑을 따르는 세오녀처럼 강하게 맺어졌고, 빛깔과 선만으로 4차원 세계도 표현한 피카소의 작품처럼 그림이 사람의 내면을 들여다보는 것 같기도 하다. 떠오른 형상들을 붓질 몇 번에 담아내는 이 화가는 작업실에 들어가면 한두 달 정도 두문불출한다고 한다. 도시인이 도인의 공간으로 돌아오니 그 공간은 숨을 쉰다. 바람의 울음소리와 계곡물의 노랫소리, 산짐승의 울음소리가 시간을 지배하고 공간을 조정한다.

“존재를 생각한다. 우리가 막연하게 눈과 비가 온다고 생각하며 살지만, 그 의미까지 생각하고 살면 다른 느낌을 알게 된다. 아침에 눈을 떴을 때, 물고기, 새 같은 동물과 식물들도 우리는 모르지만 함께 깨어나고 우리와 같이 잠든다. 공존하는 것. 그 생명에 대한 소중함과 그것들과 함께 살아감에서 가치가 생겨난다. 그것을 알게 되면 순간순간이 달리 보이고, 다 같이 살아있다는 것을 생각하면 즐거워진다. 그런 ‘공존’의 흐름을 이해하면서 작품 속의 ‘회귀’로 표현한다.” 

현명한 문화실용주의 정책을 제시하는 이인섭 이사장
문화체육관광부에서 공인된 미술 단체는 한국미술협회, 전업작가회, 서울미술협회등이 있다. 이인섭 화가는 서울미술협회(서울미협) 법인의 이인섭 이사장의 직함이 있다. 그가 행정직함을 수행한지는 올해로 5년째이며, 4천여 명 회원을 이끌면서 임기 3년인 이사장직을 2번이나 수행하고 있다. “2002년 서울미협은 서울시 법인단체로 창립 하였고, 다른 협회들처럼 이사장 선거 선출을 하다 보니 절친한 사이인데도 적이 되곤 했다. 정치적 친목과 선거 경비 부담으로 부조리가 생길 수밖에 없다.

그래서 이런 모순을 타개하고자 선거 없이 추대하는 방식을 채택 선거비용 낭비가 없앴다.” 직관적인 그의 해결책 덕에 서울미협은 업무에 더 집중하게 됐다. 주로 회원전, 서울미술협회대상전, 1년에 한번 열리는 부스전 형식인 서울모던아트쇼, 유치부에서 고등부까지 진행하는 서울국제청소년미술대상전, 1,000여 점이나 출품되는 호응을 얻은 2014 서울국제일러스트레이션공모전, 이탈리아, 중국 등 여러 차례의 국제교류전까지 굵직한 행사를 치러내고 있다. 이 이사장은 운영을 하면서 생각이 많다. “유례없이 많은 미술대학과 전공자들의 전향은 한국미협 회원이 5만에 육박하는 현실을 척박하게 만든다. 생업과 연결되는 전문 인력 양성을 대학이 수행해야 문화의 질적 향상이 가능하다고 본다. 문화 분야인 미술, 체육, 음악에서 유독 미술에 예산이 적다.

국가적 차원의 지원이 시급하다” 탁상공론으로 귀중한 생각이 날아가지 않도록, 이 이사장은 마치 그가 화가의 모습일 때처럼 숙고한 생각을 신속한 행동으로 옮긴다. 제휴 차원에서 대형문구 대표를 만나 회원할인혜택을 제의하기도 하며, ‘한집 한 그림 걸기’ 캠페인을 널리 홍보하고 회원들 간의 갤러리 매매 수수료를 줄이는 방식을 제안한다. 이 이사장은 정책적으로 극심한 불황이 문화에 대한 외면으로 이어지지 않을 것을 확신한다. 그렇기에 이 화가로 돌아가서 창작을 하는 시간을 소중하고 행복하게 여긴다. 그의 꿈은 오래 사는 것이다. 의외로 그가 화업에 몰두한 기간은 10년 정도다. “그래서 앞으로 30년은 더 살면서 의미 있는 작품을 남길 것이다. 남은 삶은 그림에 모두 쏟고 싶다” 매년 개인전을 열겠다며 더 강렬한 창작에 대한 열정을 증명하는 이 화가/이사장의 모습에서 문화예술로서의 미술의 미래와 꿈을 본다.

The four phases of life and all things in the universe of creations are being painted in time in an art studio in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province. "I want to paint with my hands not to make it with digital and arrangement. The explanation of my works are all in the works." Lee does the rough sketch in the motto of returning to human nature. The rough sketch takes a considerable time. He adds a layer on a layer with heart and soul to express the generative land. Like the Goddess who cuts the hemp cloth that has been woven delicately over a day, Lee's method is adamant.

"In the literary paintings and Korean paintings, I most value one stroke of a brush and vitality. Painting can be done in speed but it has many unseen reflections and contemplations. If it takes long, I can't put my original feeling into it." Wide and straightforward of his stroke of a brush embraces the observations of both western and eastern. The return and coexistence in his Return Series tell a strong tie between Yeonorang and Seonyeo and it is like as if the painting is looking through the spectator's inner side like works of Picasso that expressed 4 dimension with light and lines. It is said that once Lee enters into his studio, he is never seen for a month or two.

An urbanite goes into a space of ascetic, the space breathes. The crying of wind, the sing of a brook, and the sound of mountain animals control the time and space. "I think about existence. We can just live if we think it's raining or snowing but if we see beyond we can feel differently. Without us knowing, animals and plants wake up and sleep with us. Coexistence. The worthiness comes from preciousness of life and togetherness. If we know it we can see each moment in a different perspective, if we think that we are living together we become happy. By understanding those things, I express 'return'."

Suggesting a wise cultural pragmatism policy
Several art organizations include Korean Fine Arts Association, Full-Time Artist Association and Seoul Fine Arts Association (SFAA) are approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Lee has been working as the Chief Director of SFAA for 5 years, now in his second term in a row, and the association has 4,000 members. "SFAA was established in 2002 as a corporate body and due to the election system to be the chief director's position, a best friend can turn to be an enemy sometimes. Also, the political connections and campaign expenses cause irrationality. To solve these problems I introduced the appointing system." As a result SFAA could more focus on their projects.

They held various events including Membership Exhibition, SFAA Awards, Seoul Modern Art Show (yearly), Seoul International Youth Fine Arts Awards (from kindergarten to high school), 2014 Seoul International Illustration Contest (over 1,000 works to be displayed), and Exchange Exhibition in Italy and China. Lee thinks many things while running SFAA. "Excessive number of Art Colleges and the majors' change of their job make the reality of 50,000 members of Korean Fine Arts Association poor. If the educational institutions don't produce occupational art majors, we can't expect a quality culture. Also, the budget for art is the lowest among cultural sector including sports and music and the government level support is urgent."

For this, Lee meets the owner of a large stationary to establish a strategic alliance to provide benefits such as membership discounts, promotes 'One Household for One Painting', and suggests reducing trading fee. Lee is sure that the lack of policy will not lead to people turning their back on culture. That is why Lee cherishes the times of being an artist. His dream is to live longer. Surprisingly, it has been only 10 years he has painted. "I like to devote myself to art for the next 30 years to create more meaningful works. I want to give rest of my life to paint." Lee has a plan to hold a solo exhibition a year and Power Korea supports his dream and future in art world.
