A cradle of true education for ‘dreams and talents’
Myungjin Middle School, a happy site for education with a student-oriented free semester system
Principal Chung Byeong-rok of Myungjin Middle School

Education is one of the most important things to prepare for the future society in these rapidly and diversely changing situations. Keeping pace with the times, education should be changed flexibly in order to have a society which will keep growing and developing. Myungjin Middle School (Principal Chung Byeong-rok)  is endeavoring to make ‘a true spot for learning’ giving dreams to students, reward and pride to teachers and confidence to student’s parents by reflecting the demand of the students, parents and community and securing a teacher’s professionalism and autonomy.

Takes the lead in rearing talents
Myungjin Middle School with the educational aim of ‘rearing a creative, democratic citizens possessed of a healthy body and the right nature’ opened in 2003. Under the school precepts of sincerity, creation and public service, Myungjin is currently making a new tradition in a constant effort to rear talents with a thousand students and seventy teachers of the school.

In 2006, Myungjin received an Excellent Award for ‘Educational process and method’ from Busan metropolitan city’s Education Office and was selected for an excellent school for feeding sanitation from Busan’s Northern-part Education Office in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, the school was designated as a research school for culture and art education under the topic of ‘Enhancing expressive power and cultural susceptibility’ through basic art education. Besides, since two years ago, it has become a leader in free semester system, providing the students with an opportunity to find their dream and talent and for self-reflection and development through experiencing inquiry, trouble and design for their own aptitude and future.

Enhances character education through diverse educational programs
Myungjin Middle is making endeavors to help students with career development through diverse educational programs. These programs include free semester system (for 1st graders), enhancing scholastic ability, lifelong education, school symbol (short track of ice sports), in-depth study clubs, advanced subject classroom system, understanding of international culture, etc. Principal Chung Byeong-rok declared, “On the subject of first-grader classes, we are running free semester system model school in 2013 and its leader school in 2014 implementing career experience programs oriented toward diverse student activities under the slogan of ‘My talent! My dream! My future!’” Myungjin Middle provides students with diverse career and experiential activities to give them opportunities to find their own traits and career, getting rid of the burden of learning and tests. Especially, during a lunch time on Wednesday each week, the school is allowing a standing stage called ‘Myungjin Hidden Star’ for many students to present their abilities and talents.

Besides, by setting the Career Experience Day, the school has been providing diverse activities of career experience along with a dozen programs for arts and sports and selective ones. It created a result of the high 49% response rate among the whole first graders as to the question “Do you know of your traits and career?” compared with 18% before starting the free semester system.

Myungjin Middle is also directing energies toward developing and managing programs for enhancing the students’ scholarship. In addition to the basic curriculum, such as after-school subject program, the school has used learning planner for the whole graders getting them used to studying through a daily learning plan and review notes. Also by operating peer mentoring learning and self-directed learning classes in the mornings and for the vacation, the school has done its best to create circumstances in which students can study by themselves and learn joyously.

With another aim to ‘rear adolescents with a sound body and mind,’ Myungjin Middle cultivated short track players as the school symbol on purpose to produce a second Shim Seok-hee. At the 31st short track speed skating nationwide in 2014, the school won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Besides, supplying advanced equipment for students’ learning, the school has set up sisterhood relationship with Belmont High School of Australia in its positive activity for international exchange.

For character education, they are operating Myungjin press corps for the students’ positive promotion for the school and Myungjin self-rule court in an effort to accomplish advanced education through legal order. Myungjin Middle is driving forward diverse educational activities focusing on the students and their parents, who are the biggest consumer and customer. It is very likely that the school will fulfill its roles as a lighthouse to brighten the dream and future of more students.
