의학 분야의 아이디어를 특허화 하고 산업화하는 기업
“국내 최초로 의료관련 아이템을 인큐베이팅하고 싶다”

대한민국에는 10만여 명의 의사들이 있다. 전문직인 의사들이 지적 능력을 활용할 통로란 병원 관련 산업뿐이라, 그들은 자신의 창조성을 환자를 치료하고 병원을 경영하며 후학을 양성하는 데만 사용한다. 그래서 의과대 출신으로 국내 최초로 2010년 방송기자상을 수상한 전직 의학전문기자 출신 신재원 대표를 주목할 만하다. 신 대표가 헬스케어 분야의 사업가로 변신한 이유, 의료 관련 아이디어를 현실에 접목하는 산업의 밝은 전망을 탐구해 보는 시간을 가졌다. 

의사의, 의사에 의한, 의사를 위한 기업 창조
아폴로엠은 의료에 관련된 현장에서 필요한 기술을 모아 실용화, 특허화시키는 싱크탱크 기업이다. 아폴로엠은 복강경수술 영상에 유용한 소프트웨어를 개발하는 자회사 엠디텍, 소아과 관련 애플리케이션을 개발하는 모바일 닥터 등 3개의 법인 의료 벤처기업으로 구성되어 있다. 신 대표는 “의료 현장에서 복강, 내시경 같은 정밀도가 요구되는 수술에서 시야가 흐려지는 일이 많아, 군사용으로도 활용되는 전방감시카메라 기술을 의료기기에 접목해야겠다고 생각했다. 또 영유아 관련 산업에도 의료기술은 유용하다. 그래서 ‘우리집주치의’ 앱은 아이들의 증상을 입력하면 정보를 알려주고, 평소 기록한 내용을 의사에게 보여줄 수 있는 기능으로 만들었다.

장기적으로는 헬스케어 시스템의 하드웨어를 고려중이다. 그래서 손목에 밴드 형식으로 차는 웨어러블 기기로 제작하기 위해 관련업체와도 접촉하고 있다”고 설명한다. 신 대표는 본래 아폴로엠을 창립할 때, 의료와 관련된 현장에서의 기술을 만드는 회사로 만들고 싶었지만 개발 단계에서 다른 전문분야의 지식이 필요함을 깨달았다고 한다. 그래서 현장에서 필요한 기술을 제작할 수 있는 공학자들을 연결해 주고, 의료인들이 의료와 관련된 기술로 발명이나 창업을 할 때 컨설팅을 해 줄 수 있는 시스템을 국내 최초로 체계화하게 된다.

의료관련자들의 바쁜 스케줄 등으로 현장에서의 다양한 아이디어가 사장되는 것이 아쉬웠던 아폴로엠의 신재원 대표는 지속적인 의료발전에 기여할 전문가 그룹을 모으기 시작했다. 신 대표가 주축이 되어 개업의 집단이 의료기기와 U-헬스케어, IT기술과 의료기술을 융합시켜 생활 속에 접목할 뜻으로 모였다. 이 <의료 발명 포럼>은 특허와 모바일 IT분야 전문가들에게도 비상한 관심을 모으며 장차 적극적인 지적 발명가들의 요람으로 거듭날 전망이다. 신 대표는 보다 장기적인 관점으로 보고 있다. “포럼에서는 현직 개원의들은 물론 한국발명진흥회 소속의 특허 전문가들도 초빙했다. 아폴로엠을 운영하면서 앞으로는 새로운 기술로 창업할 때 기업과 정부 기관의 서포트가 있도록 전문가들을 서로 연결하고 지원하는 시스템을 만들 것이다” 

창업희망자와 인간을 존중하는 의료산업 전문기업가가 될 것
국내 유일한 의학전문기자 출신 벤처사업가인 신 대표의 이력은 특이한 만큼 화려하다. 서울대 의대에서 가정의학과 전문의를 목표로 하다 MBC 의학전문기자 공고를 보고 16대 1의 경쟁률을 뚫고 공중파에 진출했다. 그는 국내에서 10명 내외에 불과한 특수기자인 의학전문기자로 5년 여 간 언론과 방송계에서 종횡무진 활약했다. 2010년 아이티 대지진에 한국 최초로 의학전문특파원기자로 파견돼 현지의 취재를 담당하면서, 부상자들의 수술을 집도해 노바티스 의학기자상과 녹십자 언론문화상을 수상하는 뜻 깊은 순간도 있었다. “치료를 목적으로 간 것은 아니었지만 현장에서 의료진이 부족하다 보니 내가 필요한 상황에 맞추어 사명감을 발휘한 것뿐이다.

진로를 결정할 때, 자율성이 보장되는 전문직 중에서 사람을 벌하는 법학과 사람을 살리는 의학 중 후자를 고르게 됐다. 그러다 보니 공부를 하면서도 ‘의사’란 모름지기 공부보다 인간에 대한 이해가 더 우선인 직업이라고 생각했다” 신 대표는 의사로 개업한 후에도 하루에 볼 수 있는 고혈압, 당뇨 등 만성질환 환자들에게 일일이 설명할 수 없는 빠듯함이 늘 안타까웠고, 결국 많은 이들에게 지식을 전하는 기자직을 선택하게 되었다. 팟캐스트 의학분야 조회수 1위를 기록한 <나는 의사다>에 2년 동안 참여하기도 했고, 많은 사람들과 소통하며 새로운 의학 분야 업무 개척에 목말랐던 신 대표는 ‘창업’의 선구자가 되기로 결심한다. 세브란스 의과대학에서 창업에 관심이 있는 후배들을 위해 강의하는 신 대표는 “궁극적으로 추구하는 것은 의료관련 인큐베이팅 회사다.

의료관련 벤처, 스타트업 기업들이 헤매는 경우가 많다. IT, 게임 등 다른 분야에는 컨설팅과 인큐베이팅이 발전해 있는데, 유독 의료 관련 분야에는 도움을 받을만한 업체가 전무하다시피 하다. 그래서 처음 창업할 때도 새로 개척해야 할 때가 많아 힘들었다”고 회상한다. “의료분야는 유독 창업을 하면 실패했을 때 재기하기 어려운 조건이 많다. 그래서 더욱 많은 성공 확률, 체계적인 환경을 제공해 주고 싶다. 아폴로엠을 통해 직접 실현하고, 다른 창업자들에게도 도움을 주고 싶다”는 신 대표는 소프트웨어 판매, 헬스케어 앱 개발을 계속하는 한편 앞으로 3년 안에 의료벤처 10개를 만들어 업계를 이끌어가겠다는 포부를 밝혔다. 남들과 똑같은 삶 대신, 남과 다른 삶, 남을 돕는 지혜로 지식 산업을 택한 신 대표의 새로운 도전에 앞으로도 꾸준히 박수를 보낸다.

An enterprise that patents and industrializes ideas from medical sector  
“Will incubate medical care-related items for the first time in the nation”

There are about 100,000 medical doctors in Korea. Since there are no paths for professional doctors to use their intellectual power but hospital-related industry, they use their creativity only for treating patients, managing a hospital and cultivating students. This why president Shin Jae-won, a former medical reporter who won the first award for broadcasting reporter in 2010 as a person from a medical school, is worth to be noted. We had a time to hear from him how president Shin has switched to a business person in the field of healthcare, the bight future of an industry for applying medical care-related ideas to reality.     

Created the enterprise of a doctor, by a doctor, and for a doctor 
ApolloM is a think tank enterprise which gathers technologies needed at the scene of medical care for practical use and patents. AplloM consists of three medical venture companies, including its subsidiaries MDTech for developing the software useful for laparoscopic image and Mobile Doctor for developing pediatric applications. President Shin explained, “At a medical scene, many cases of blurry vision occur in the surgery requiring precision, such as laparoscope and endoscope, so I thought of applying the technology of forward looking camera used militarily to medical equipment.

Medical technology is also useful for infant-related industry. So ‘the Family Doctor’ App was made with the function of telling information if a child’s symptom is put in and showing the usually recorded content to a doctor. On a long-term basis, I am considering the hardware for a healthcare system. To that end, I am keeping in touch with related companies in order to manufacture a wearable device worn around a wrist like a band.” According to president Shin, when he originally founded ApolloM, he intended a company of making technology for the scene related to medical treatment but he soon realized that he needed knowledge in other specialties, too, at a development stage.

Consequently, he came to compose a system of connecting engineers capable of manufacturing technology needed at the scene and consulting with medical men when they invent something or start up with medical technology. Shin Jae-won, president of ApolloM, who had felt sorry about diverse ideas at the scene coming to nothing, began to gather a group of experts who would contribute to continued medical development. Centering around President Shin, a group of practicing doctors gathered with an intention to embody a convergence of medical equipment, U-healthcare, IT and medical technology for everyday life. This <Medical invention forum> drew an unusual attention from experts in patent and mobile IT, too, showing the prospect of being born again in the future as a cradle of positive intellectual inventors.

President Shin has a longer perspective. “The forum invited not only incumbent practicing doctors but also patent experts belonging to Korea Invention Promotion Association. While operating AppoloM, I will make a system in the future for connecting and assisting experts together so that when companies start up with new technology they may be  supported from enterprises and the government.” 

Will become a medical entrepreneur who respects would-be startups and humans 
President Shin, who is from the only medical reporter in the nation, has a splendid career. He jad been aiming toward a home-doctoring specialist at S.N.U. Medical School but looking at a notice from MBC on recruiting medical reporters, he advanced to the public channel through the completion of 16: 1. As one of only about ten medical reporters in the whole nation, he played a very active part in the press and broadcasting for five years. While he was sent out as a medical reporter for 2010 Haiti earthquake for the first time in Korea and covered the site, he performed operations on the wounded and won Novartis Medical Reporter Prize and Green Cross Media Culture Prize.

“I didn’t go for treating people but lack of medical team on the site simply called me to exercise my sense of mission. When I made a career decision among professions secured of autonomy, I chose medicine which revives people before law which punishes them. So while studying, I thought that ‘a medical doctor’ is a profession in more need for understating of people than for schoolwork.” After practicing medicine, president Shin always felt sorry for the tight schedule by which he couldn’t enumerate things to patients with chronic disease such as hypertension, diabetes, etc., so he came to choose the job as reporter that can deliver knowledge to many people. For two years he participated in the program <I am a medical doctor> which ranked first in the number of views in the medical field of Podcast. Being thirsty for cultivating a new medical field of business capable of communicating with many people, President Shin decided to be a precursor as a ‘startup.’ President Shin, who are giving lectures to his juniors interested in starting a business at Severance Medical School, recollects, “my ultimate goal is an incubating company related to medical care. Too often medical care-related ventures and startup companies lose their way. Unlike other fields such as IT, computer game, etc. with developed consulting and incubating  business, medicine-related field is almost the only one that has no company to look to for help. That’s why when I started, I went through many difficulties with so many times to cultivate things anew.”

Saying “In medical sector, a company has to meet uniquely many unfavorable conditions for comeback if it fails after starting business. So I want to provide a larger probability for success and systematic environment. I will realize things myself through ApolloM and give help to other startup founders,” President Shin declared his ambition that he will make 10 medical ventures within three years to lead the industry, while continuing to sell software and develop healthcare App. We are ready to give big hands to the new challenge of President Shin who has chosen a different life and the knowledge industry with wisdom of helping others instead of the same life as others.
