화석연료의 고갈과 이로 인한 에너지 가격 상승, 특히 화석연료의 온실가스 배출로 인한 환경문제는 하루가 다르게 심각성을 더해간다. 에너지 소비의 97%를 해외에 의존하는 우리에게 이 문제는 더 절실하다. 때문에 에너지 효율 향상과 환경을 훼손하지 않으면서 안정적으로 에너지 공급이 가능한 기술인 ‘에너지하베스팅(Energy harvesting)이 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 말 그대로 주변에서 버려지는 에너지를 회수해 쓸 수 있는 전기에너지로 변환하고 이용하는 것. 특히 독보적인 기술력을 바탕으로 ㈜이엠코어는 전자파 에너지하베스팅의 선두주자를 꿈꾸고 있다. 더욱이 전자파로 인한 2차 공해가 만연하는 지금, 우리가 ㈜이엠코어의 행보에 집중해야 하는 이유다.

전자기술의 발전에 의해 인류는 풍부한 혜택을 누려왔다. 이제는 그 종착역을 가늠하기 힘들 정도로 빠르게 진화하고 있다. 이와 함께 정보기기가 소모하는 전력량도 지속적으로 늘어나고 있다. 가까운 미래에는 정보기기가 전체 전력 소모량의 20~30%를 차지할 전망이라고 한다. 기본적으로 문명이 발전하면 발전할수록 전기 소비량은 증가하기 마련. 최선의 방법은 최대한 전력 소비를 억제하는 것이지만 이건희 대표의 생각은 남달랐다. 그는 “처음 연구소장이 실제로 노트북에서 발생하는 전자파로 발광다이오드를 반짝거리는 시연을 했을 때, 그 가능성을 확신했다”면서 이어 “전자기기의 에너지는 근본적으로 전자파에 의해 손실된다.

이엠코어의 고민은 여기서부터 시작했고, 이제는 그 대안을 제시할 수 있게 됐다”고 밝혔다. ㈜이엠코어는 각종 전자제품 및 고전력 단지 등에서 발생하는 전자파를 회수해 전기에너지를 생산하는 에너지하베스팅 회사다. 이 대표는 독자적인 기술력을 확보해야겠다는 일념으로 연구개발에 매진했다. 그 결과 <전자기파 에너지 변환 및 저장 장치>특허출원과 <ISO 9001>인증, 전자파 변환기 효율시험성적서를 취득하는 등 성능과 품질에 대한 공신력을 확보했다. 앞으로 ㈜이엠코어의 독보적인 기술력은 전자파 에너지하베스팅을 선도할 것으로 전망되며, 독보적인 기술력으로 국민편익증진에 힘쓸 것으로 기대되고 있다.

전자파를 원천적으로 빨아들이는 EM변환기
'전자기파'란 전기의 노폐물 같은 존재다. 전기가 가는 곳이면 항상 따라다니는 불가분의 부산물인 셈. 전자파가 인체에 미치는 악영향은 이미 해외는 물론 국내에서도 각종 연구와 방송에 의해 여러 번 밝혀진 바 있다. 이런 상황에 여러 기업에서 전자파패드 등 유해 전자파 차폐 기술을 개발하기 시작했다. 그러나 이 차폐기술은 대부분 시간이 지나면 전자파 차폐 물질이 수명을 다해 그리 실용적이지 못하다는 평이다.

또한 일반인들의 막연한 전자파에 대한 우려로 시중에서 불티나게 팔리고 있는 숯이나 선인장, 황토 등 일명 ‘전자파 차단제품’은 실제 효과가 거의 없거나 일시적인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이에 관해 이 대표는 “전자파를 에너지로 전환하는 기술을 개발하게 되니 부가적으로 전자파를 없애줄 수 있는 기술도 확보하게 됐다. 기존의 제품들을 체크해보니까 광고와 다른 면모를 발견했다. 기존의 것들은 막는 것이고 우리는 회로를 통해 빨아들인다”고 설명했다. ㈜이엠코어가 그동안의 축적된 R&D 성과를 바탕으로 출시한 차단패드는 기존 전기장판 위에 이불 깔 듯 사용하면 된다. 반영구적이고 소비전력도 없다. 또한 EM변환기를 자체내장한 전기장판과 형광등은 원천적으로 전자파를 빨아들이기 때문에 관련업계에 주목을 받고 있다.

우리만의 독보적인 기술력으로 혁신을 확신
“사람은 큰 돌에 걸려 넘어지지 않고 작은 돌에 걸려 넘어진다는 얘기를 팀원들에게 자주한다. 그 동안은 내실을 다지는 시기였다. 우리가 완벽히 준비가 됐을 때 시작하려 한다.” 
㈜이엠코어의 혁신성은 생활 속 전자파 에너지 변환·차단을 넘어 송전탑으로 확대된다. 이 대표는 “그 동안이 데이터를 모아온 시기라면 이제는 우리만의 독보적인 기술력을 바탕으로 각종 공익사업에 참여하고 있다. 실제로 송전탑에서 버려지는 전자파는 어마어마해서 실제로 쓸 수 있는 양이 나온다”고 설명했다. 실제 상용화되면 자연스레 전자파가 없어지기 때문에 밀양송전탑같은 2차 공해에 관한 논란도 해결할 수 있다며 그는 독보적인 기술력을 바탕으로 혁신을 얘기할 수 있는 지점에 도달했다고 확신했다.  

최종적으로 추구하는 비전에 대해 그는 “한국은 전자파 인식이 약하다. 전자파 기준치가 해외와 400배 가까이 차이가 난다. 지금의 한국제품 가지고 이대로 나가면 활용을 못할 수 있다. 올해 실리콘밸리에 현지 법인을 만들 기회가 왔다. 국내보다 해외를, 미국을 택한 것도 국민들의 인식이 조금은 나아지지 않을까 해서다”라고 밝혔다. 

흔히들 전문가보다 비전문가를 이해시키는 게 더 어렵다고 말한다. 자기 스스로 잘 알지 못하기 때문에 어려운 것. 이건희 대표는 문명의 혜택이 피해를 줄 수 있다며 그게 전자파라고 말한다. 하지만 그의 집요한 R&D 의지에서 전자파에 대한 인식을 바꿀 수 있는 날이 다가오고 있는 것을 느낄 수 있었다. ㈜이엠코어의 이러한 행보 속에 전자파에 대한 전반적인 인식고취는 물론 대한민국 에너지하베스팅의 새로운 역사를 기대해 본다.

Electromagnetic wave is like the waste of electricity. Where there is electricity, there is electromagnetic wave. The bad effect of electromagnetic wave to our body have been proven home and abroad. Lee is sure that if it is commercialized he can solve the second pollution like Miryang transmission tower conflict as it can naturally remove electromagnetic wave. 

Regarding his future vision Lee said "the recognition of electromagnetic wave is weak in Korea. The threshold is 400 times different from overseas countries. If we go like this with Korean products we might not be able to use it in reality. We recently had a chance to establish a foreign branch in Silicon Valley. We chose US in the hope of Korean people improving their recognition." 

There is a saying that it is more difficult to convince normal people. Because one does not know oneself very much. Lee said electromagnetic is a benefit of civilization but it can have a bad effect on human also. But Lee's tenacious R&D might change people's point of view. Power Korea expects a new history of energy harvesting in Korea through EMCore.
