Achieving $5m export and preparing to become a social enterprise
Making a company where the employees are happy as the key word of 2015
Ray Choi, the CEO of Namin Co., Ltd.

Namin has shown a small but strong company's potential to the world based on the acquisition of patents, active export strategy, continuous technical partnerships and R&D. Namin now has achieved $5m export which was their goal two years ago. Namin produces high-tension special pipes used for power plants, petrochemistry, and offshore plant, and it is more meaningful that they achieved their goal despite the poor domestic export environment. The economic recession rather was an opportunity for Namin to focus on internal stability and R&D, and Choi applied the opportunity to his marketing strategies. Power Korea has met Choi again, after 2 years since we met him last, and heard about his business ambition and strategy to make a good company.

Leaping high through the potential of achieving $5m export as a driving force
Namin was registered to one of major German companies SIEMENS as an affiliate in 2010 only with their business plan. The confidence of signing with a Norwegian company Fluenta's Korean branch also played as a driving force. Their clients include BBS, ALSTOM, TECHNIQ of Europe, and MHI and Toshiba of Japan, and 10 major Korean companies such as Daelim, Samsung C&T, Samsung Engineering, and POSCO. Namin was established by co-investment of Singapore ESS starting by receiving $240,000 orders in 2010. They made $2.5m export by 2013 and achieved $5m on 5 December of the same year.

Choi said that his foresight and success strategy worked well. "When I built the first factory, I thought that the facilities of foreign investors' exclusive zone was an advantage for us because the supply of raw materials was easy and we could reduce the distribution cost. In fact, if there was no extension of delivery period from one of our clients last year, we could have achieved $10m export but we don't regret anyway as we did our best. There is a time for everything and I think we can certainly reach our goal this year."

Looking back, Choi is happy on the fact that they dominate the markets in Europe, including Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, and Japan and the US despite the poor domestic export environment and economic recession. "The key word this year for Namin is 'challenge'. It is the driving force to maintain the sales equivalent to last year as the current situation shows that the market is down by 50%. We need government support and positive international market but the company should go through it well basically. We will push forward to achieve more this year than what we've done before."

The Growth of the company starts at building internal stability
As the world pipe market is changing in various ways, it is unusual for a small and medium company to achieve $3m or $5m export. Choi said by comparing the industry with Namin "when we reckoned that the situation of the European market was in bad shape, we worked on the markets in the US and Japan and vice versa. We overcame the situation in that way last year. There's prediction that this year will be harder but the opportunity we have is not that small compared to the scale of the global market. Namin's achievement was the result of our hard work."

Alongside the CEO Choi, Namin added CKO(Chief Knowledge Officer), CFO(Chief Financial Officer), and COO(Chief Operating Officer) to actively take the orders from major companies home and abroad. Chunsik Oh (CFO) said "we have appointed each manager to the Headquarters, Production Team and Sales Team to effectively work together. It's time to look for the next 10 to 20 years through maintaining enterprise culture and value based on our achievements. One of our key words is 'passion'. If we do our job passionately we can gain trust from colleagues and clients."

Choi has been keeping his philosophy of raising the staff's happiness since the establishment of the company. He actually is trying hard to introduce computing production system for improving work environments. As a part of the efforts, he obtained a patent for 'Pipe Spool Production Management System Control Method' in 2013. He said he will obtain more patents related to production management.

Leading the national economy, preparing to be a social enterprise
It is the age of 'Creation of Hope' now over 'Creative Economy'. A true leadership pays attention to detail. Choi said "I have been thinking about the limit and direction of the manufacturing industry for the last 26 years. That is why I wrote two reports on the plant sector. There is a saying that even the king cannot eradicate poverty. If regarding the nation as parents it is understandable for them to support the clever child. The same applies to the situation now. Creativity is important to have competitiveness. Creativity in this case can mean efficiency. If you can do things in 1 minute which it normally takes an hour, that is creativity."

Meanwhile, he predicted that there will be diversification of revenue in 2015 like the last year and said "so far the ratio between domestic demand and export has been 7:3, but we predict that export will increase to 50%. The construction of a factory is scheduled by late this year but we predict we can run it within the year. We hope to achieve more than the goal we have set this year." He added "we are participating in various donations and social contribution activities because we want to reborn as a social enterprise. We signed a MOU with Sacheon City's Multicultural Family Support Center to support their settlement in Korea so that the company can grow together with the region."

Choi is also determined to support his staff. He said "the happiness Namin will make covers the scope from rewards for staff to customer satisfaction. We will march forward until Namin will be the top of the pipe industry in the world." Power Korea hopes a bright future for Namin like we did two years ago.
