여행용 캐리어에 트렌드를 더해 스타일리시한 변신을 이루다

출입국통계에 따르면 내국인의 해외여행 출국 건수가 2012년부터 매년 8%씩 증가하여 작년에만 1,600만 명이었고, 연령대도 20대에서 40대가 전체의 절반을 넘었다. 젊은 여행객이 늘어나고 있지만 국내외를 막론하고 여행 가방(캐리어) 시장은 실용성을 우선시하며 디자인은 뒷전에 있었던 것이 사실이다. 한편, 스타일리시한 여행용품으로 잊을 수 없는 추억을 만들어 주는 업체가 있어 화제를 모으고 있다. 온라인 쇼핑몰에서 시작해 얼마 전 명동 눈스퀘어에 ‘럭키 플래닛’ 오프라인 매장을 연 럭키 팩토리가 그들이다.

캐리어에 트렌드를 더해 젊은 고객층 유혹

윤혜숙 대표는 대학에서 의상디자인을 전공하고 졸업 후 패션지 기자로 활동하며 여행을 다니던 본인의 경험을 바탕으로 캐리어 사업에 뛰어들게 되었다. 평소 여행을 좋아하던 윤 대표는 10년 전 어느 날 ‘여행을 가면 옷은 예쁘게 꾸밀 수 있는데 여행 가방은 단색의 투박한 것을 쓸 수밖에 없다’는 것을 깨달았다. 당시에는 홈쇼핑에서 구할 수 있는 캐리어도 점잖은 라이센스 브랜드뿐이라 젊은 사람들의 취향을 맞출 수 있는 여지가 없었다.

그러나 이미 국내에는 캐리어 공장이 거의 없어진 상태였고, 윤 대표는 중국으로 건너가 현지 공장에서 가져온 원단으로 온라인 쇼핑몰 사업을 시작하게 되었다. 윤 대표의 컨셉은  젊은 층에게 어필할 수 있는 스타일리시한 캐리어를 만드는 것이었다. 놀랍게도 2006년 여행가방 브랜드 오픈 직후 여러 쇼핑몰에서 기획전 제의가 들어왔고 300여 개 물량으로 시작한 것이 곧 예약 물량만 몇 십 배를 기록할 만큼 시장의 반응은 뜨거웠다. 2008년에는 국내 홈쇼핑에서 완판(매진)을 기록하고 베스트 브랜드로 선정될 정도였다.

“스타일리시한 여행 가방을 만드는 것은 제가 하고 싶어서 시작한 일이었지만, 당시 반응을 보고 이만큼의 요구가 있는 것을 알게 됐습니다. 저도 워낙 여행을 좋아하니까 고객들에게 뭔가를 제안해줘야겠다 싶은 마음이었고, 본격적으로 브랜드로 개발해봐야겠다는 계획을 세운 뒤 패턴 작업도 다시 하고 저희 로고도 넣어서 온라인 중심으로 키워왔어요”

스타일리시한 캐리어 브랜드 '럭키 플래닛' 인기
튼튼함과 실용성이 장점인 기존 캐리어는 ‘필요하기 때문에 쓰는 것’일 뿐 소장품으로서의 특별한 의미는 갖지 못했다. 수납공간이 많고, 튼튼한 재료를 사용했고, 잘 고장 나지 않으면 대부분 합격이었기 때문이다. 스타일리시한 캐리어 브랜드로 주목받은 ‘럭키 플래닛’은 캐리어 시장의 상식에 반기를 들었다. 캐리어도 일종의 패션용품이 될 수 있다는 것이다.

럭키 플래닛은 기내용․수화물용․대형 캐리어부터 숄더백․크로스백 등의 여행 가방, 파우치․여권케이스․캐리어 커버․네임택 등 여행 소품, 그 밖의 여행용 아동용품과 생활용품 등 다양한 제품을 마련하고 있다. 또 2011년 헬로키티, 2013년 워너브라더스의 라이센스를 획득해 본격적인 브랜딩 마케팅에 박차를 가하고 있다. 가격도 합리적인 수준으로 알루미늄 핸들과 더블 휠이 들어간 프리미엄 제품이 11만 원 선, 아기자기한 브랜드의 특성 상 학생들이 수학여행용으로도 많이 찾는 대중적인 브랜드는 5만 원 선이다.

최근 가장 인기를 끄는 브랜드는 우주를 소재로 한 ‘Journey to the Galaxy’로 우주와 우주인들이 그려진 패턴을 직접 개발해 신선한 캐리어로 주목받았다. 폴리카보네이트를 사용해 잘 깨지지 않고 바퀴 역시 튼튼하며 가격대도 89,000원부터 가장 큰 사이즈가 124,000원으로 부담이 없다. 또 같은 디자인으로 클러치, 핸드폰 케이스, 여권 케이스 등 세분화된 라인업이 개발되어 있다.

럭키 플래닛은 동대문과 남대문 도매상가부터 광화문 핫트랙스, 갤러리아, 코즈니 수원․이대점 등 팝업 스토어를 거쳐 작년 12월 명동 눈스퀘어에 처음으로 단독 매장을 열었다. 10년간의 성장을 지켜본 윤 대표는 오히려 “여행 시장은 많이 변하지 않았다”고 말한다.

“요즘에는 2~30만원만 있어도 마음만 먹으면 떠날 수 있고, 그만큼 연령대도 낮아졌어요. 예전에는 여름휴가만 바라봤지만 연휴나 주말여행도 할 수 있습니다. 온라인 브랜드는 많이 생기긴 했는데 어느 순간 가격 경쟁밖에 안되더라고요. 여행 가방 브랜드는 어느 정도 자리를 잡은 것들이 있지만, 트렌디한 제품 시장은 이제 시작입니다”

2009년 라스베이거스와 유럽 전시회에서 호평을 받은 바 있는 럭키 플래닛은 앞으로 ‘Be Stylish’를 목표로 브랜딩에 힘쓸 것이라고 했다. 여행을 다니면서 윤 대표가 직접 여러 불편을 겪은 만큼 핸들이나 바퀴 등 제품에 대해서는 최상의 품질을 만들고 스타일리시한 부분을 업그레이드하는 데 초점을 맞춘다는 것이다. 윤 대표는 “처음에는 여행 가방으로 시작했지만 토털 트래블 샵의 인식을 심는 것을 목표로 하고 해외로도 진출할 수 있게 키우고 싶다”는 포부를 밝혔다. 롤 모델조차 없던 개척지에서 디자인 캐리어 시장을 일궈낸 윤 대표의 꿈이 이루어지는 그 날이 오기를 마음 깊이 응원한다.

According to the statistics of Immigration Office, Korean's overseas travel has been increasing by 8% a year since 2012. It recorded 16 million people last year and more than half were between 20s and 40s. However, despite the increasing number of young travelers, the designs of travel carrier bags were neglected overall due to its emphasis on practicality. A stylish travel product provider Lucky Factory, which recently opened an offline store 'Lucky Planet' in Noon Square, Myeong-dong, is the talk of the town.

Yoon majored in Clothes Design at university, started to work as a reporter in a fashion magazine after graduation, and jumped into the travel bag business based on her experience of traveling. Yoon realized one day 10 years ago that she could doll up when traveling but she had to use unsophisticated monotonous travel bags. Back then, most travel bags were made by moderate licensed brands which could not satisfy the tastes of people and the related manufacturing factories in Korea were disappeared.

Yoon went to China and brought the fabrics to Korea and started an online shopping mall in 2006 with the concept of making stylish travel bags aimed at young people. Yoon subsequently received special selling events from several shopping malls and she started with 300 products which soon became ten times in reservation only. In 2008, Yoon sold out all her products in a TV home shopping network and was chosen as the best brand. 

"I started the business because I liked making stylish travel bags but I didn't know there was that much demand. I like traveling and I wanted to suggest something to my customers. I finally started to develop the bags by putting in patterns and logos in the intention of selling them online."

The existing travel bags are emphasized on sturdiness and practicality but lack in the value of its collectability. It was ok if it was strong and had enough storage space but Yoon revolted against the norm as she thought that a travel bag can be a fashionable item. Lucky Planet provides various travel goods from large bags, shoulder bags, cross bags to pouches, passport cases, covers, name tags and travel goods for children and daily use. They obtained licenses for Hello Kitty in 2011 and Warner Bros in 2013 to push forward the brand marketing in earnest. The price is also reasonable; premium products loaded with aluminum handle and double wheels around $110 and popular general products around $50. 

The most popular of them all is 'Journey to the Galaxy' which has space and spaceman patterns. The products are made of polycarbonate and is sturdy and strong and the price ranges from $89 to $124 for the largest size. Clutches, mobile phone cases and passport cases are also lined up in the same design.

Lucky Store has been in the state of pop-up stores in  Dongdaemun, Namdaemun, Gwanghwamun Hottracks, Galleria, and Kosney in Suwon and Ewha Womans University branches but they finnally opened an exclusive store in Noon Square, Myeong-dong in December. Yoon, who has been observing the tourist market for 10 years, says that the market has not much changed. 

"If you have $200 to $300 you can go traveling and the age is getting lower. People were looking forward to summer holiday in the past but we can travel at the weekend nowadays. Many online brands were appeared but with only price competition. Some of the travel bag specialized brands are well settled but the trendy product market is beginning now."

Lucky Planet was received well at the exhibitions in Las Vegas and Europe in 2009 and Yoon said that she will focus on 'branding' under the slogan 'Be Stylish'. 

"I started with travel bags but have now a goal to make it as a total travel shop. I want to grow it to be a global company." Power Korea hopes Yoon will make her dream come true.
