Leading economic and cultural exchange between Norway and S. Korea
Continuing the efforts of friendly exchanges in tourism and Olympics

Torbjorn Holthe, the Ambassador of Norway
The ties between Norway and S. Korea started when Norway dispatched 623 medical personnel to S. Korea for 4 years from April 1951 to November 1954. They stayed in Uijeongbu and Dongducheon and treated the 90,000 wounded people including civilians. Taking this opportunity, the two countries eventually tied diplomatic relations in 1959 and signed an FTA in 2006 as a member country of EFTA (European Free Trade Association; four European countries that continue to operate independently from the European Union). Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met H.E. Torbjorn Holthe, the Ambassador of Norway, at his office in Jeong-dong, Seoul, as the second honorary ambassador on our 2015 Foreign Embassy Special.

Ambassador Holthe pushes forward publishing NORMASH (Norwegian Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) in Korean
H.E. Holthe worked at the Norwegian Embassy in Nigeria, Spain, India and as a Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before he came to S. Korea as an ambassador in October 2011. As The Ambassador of Norway to S. Korea, he has been contributing to strengthening the cooperation between the two countries in politics, economy and culture for more than 3 years. He strongly felt the need for translation into Korean of the book NORMASH (Norwegian Mobile Army Surgical Hospital; 90,000 wounded people were treated here) and this is one of his many achievements since he took the office in S. Korea.

H.E. Holthe has a great interest in spreading Norwegian culture to Korea. When the Norwegian crime-writer Jo Nesbø, who wrote 'Snowman', visited S. Korea for autograph & public reading event, Holthe personally joined the event to introduce the writer to the Korean fans.

"When the Munch Exhibition was held in Seoul last year, more than 180,000 people visited. It was an enormous number of people and I was impressed by the Korean people's interest in art. We also received an enthusiastic response from the Korean audience when the five representative Norwegian jazz bands performed at Jarasum International Jazz Festival, and Henrik Ibsen's 'The Pillars of Society' was directed and performed by Koreans in Seoul last November and it was well received."

Numerous Norwegian companies active in Korea including Statoil and Marine Harvest
Running student exchange programs help economic relations

Many Korean and Norwegian major companies are currently active in both countries. As the ships and petroleum industries are strong in Norway, most Norwegian companies in Korea are shipbuilding or energy related. This is the reason 2,000 Norwegian people are working and living in Busan, Ulsan and Geoje. Considering Norway's 5 million population, it is a significant number. The representative companies include the global oil company 'Statoil', the world's No.1 salmon farming and manufacturing company 'Marine Harvest', and the king crab export company 'Cape Fish'. Export of fish, especially salmon and mackerel, to Korea has risen by 84% over last year and the export of king crab has also increased to 500 tons from only 1 ton in 2012.

Ambassador Holthe told us an interesting story. The baby care product company Stokke was acquired by NXMH which is affiliated company of the Korean game company Nexon's largest shareholder NXC. All the products of Stokke are supplied to more than 50 countries in the world and S. Korea alone has 150 stores nationwide.

"S. Korea has a good infrastructure for foreign companies to open a business and is clear about intellectual property rights and tax. However, if the government actively runs various student exchange programs, they will help our economic relations greatly in the future."

Incheon-Oslo nonstop chartered flight boosts up vigorous interchanges between the countries
The government and committee have to attract public interest to Pyeong Chang 2018 Olympics

The Korean tourists who visited Norway have significantly increased. The number of nights Korean tourists stayed in Norway recorded 62,000 nights which shows a 37% increase compared to 2011. Thanks to this popularity, the Korean Air ran chartered flights between Incheon and Oslo 5 times in the summer 2013 and 2014. The success of the Disney animation 'Frozen', which most locations were set in Norway, also is expected to encourage the Korean tourists to visit Norway.
”The opera house in Busan (to be completed by 2018) was designed by the acclaimed Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta which designed the opera house in Oslo also. If you visit Oslo you might be able to feel and compare the two opera houses."

Ambassador Holthe has been married for 35 years and currently is living with his wife in Seoul. Although their three daughters live in Norway, they visit S. Korea twice a year and whenever they visit they get surprised by the rapid change and development of Korea.

When asked about Pyeong Chang 2018 Olympics, H.E. Holthe gave a piece of advice by saying "the items of winter Olympic games are not very familiar with Korean people yet. Therefore, it is vital for the government and the committee to find ways to attract public interest to the games."

H.E. Holthe’s total directional efforts for the last three years have brought a close cooperation between Norway and S. Korea in politics, economy and culture. Power Korea hopes H.E. Holthe will keep pushing forward with remarkable activities for the two countries until he finishes his duty in 2016.
