Independence activist of the month : Sangkyu Hwang [1890 ~ 1931]

¢ÂComplete the country's independence with hand-to-hand combat¢Â

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Korea Liberation Association and Independence Hall chose Sangkyu Hwang, who formed a heroic group, as the independence activist of the month.  He was born in Miyrang, worked as a teacher in labor night school and private school, and started independence movement by participating in Ilhapsa, Liberation Corps, and the Korean Liberation Association. He fled to Manchuria and became the financial officer of Korea Liberation Uigunbu and Korea Independence Military Government in Jílín in 1919, and formed the heroic group with the help of his wife's nephew. He smuggled himself into Korea to plan an uprising but was arrested and sentenced to 7 year's imprisonment in the summer of 1920. When he came out of prison in 1926, he devoted himself to community movement in Miyrang and established Miyrang branch of Shinganhae and served as the head. In June 1929, he investigated Gwangju Student Movement as the executive of the central headquarters's legislative organization and executive department, and held mass meetings but, died suddenly by an illness. The government conferred Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal to Hwang in 1963. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs held an academic lecture for his distinguished services at Kim Koo Museum & Library on 22 January 2015. Also, a photo exhibition was held at Independence Hall and Seodaemun Prison History Hall during January.
The Korean War hero of the month - lieutenant general Hongil Kim (1898.9.23~1980.8.8) Decoration : Taeguk Order of Military Merit
Lieutenant general Hongil Kim, who successfully blocked the North Korean army on the Han River frontier, was chosen as the Korean War hero of the month. The S. Korean army had to retreat to the south by the advancing forces of the North Korean army when the war broke out. Kim was appointed as the commander of Siheung zone battle to fight back against the enemy. He united the retreating army to form three Hongsung divisions and built 24km of defence line along the south of the Han River to block the enemy. The national army eventually had to retreat at this battle by enemy's tank forces but they delayed the enemy's operational plan and made time for the national army's strategic retreat and the participation of the US forces. He took the commender's role of the first corps and formed a new defence line around Bonghwa Mountain and Munan Mountain (south of Jincheon) and delayed the enemy armed with tank and artillery for five days. He carried out an encircling operation by counterattack around Kigye, Angang, Yeongdeok and Pohang when retreated to the Nakdong River, and drove the enemy back to Bihak Mountain. The first corps chased the enemy to Kigye and Pohang and carried out counterattack operations. He then inaugurated as the chancelor of Military Academy and devoted himself to fostering army officials and later started to serve as a lieutenant general from March 1951.
