Shin focuses on providing correct information and public awareness

Phonak boasts the world's No. 1 market share in the hearing instrument industry. Headquartered in Zürich Switzerland, they are the premium hearing aid specialized company that has been developing and producing state of the art hearing aids and FM System for more than 60 years.

Sonova Group, where Phonak belongs to, includes the four core brands Unitron, Advanced Bionics, and Connect Hearing, and covers all the areas of hearing related solutions from hearing instruments to cochlear implants. Starting from Phonak Korea in 2009, Sonova Group established a branch in Korea and is preparing to spread the proper knowledge and information about the instruments. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Dongil Shin, the CEO of Phonak Korea, and learned about their technology.

Phonak is a multinational corporation which has 25 branches in the world including Australia, Belgium, Canada and Denmark, and 100 distributors including Albania, Columbia, Egypt and Iceland. It has No. 1 market share in US (21.9%), Europe (25.1%) and the world (27%), and Phonak Korea was established in 2009 for production and supply in the domestic market. 

The CEO Shin considered the process of providing proper information about hearing aids as top priority in the current market. The hearing-impaired population in Korea is rapidly increasing due to the aging society caused by low birth rate and high medical technology. WHO estimates that 15% of the whole population has hearing problems and this means that there are 7.5 million hearing-impaired population in Korea. If we regard 1/3 of them actually need a hearing-aid, it is estimated to be 2.5 million to 3 million who need it but the current sales show only 12,000 products. 

Shin says "hearing loss comes natural as you get older. If you are exposed to noisy environments you need to take care of your ear and when you feel you have a hearing problem you should not hesitate to use a hearing aid. It is like you get glasses when your eye sight gets bad. The important thing is that you need a proper information about the instrument including its quality and brand value."

Introducing 'Phonak Care' to take care of the loss of your hearing instrument

Shin and Phonak Korea are doing a variety of activities to change the misconception about hearing aid and to provide a proper information. They gave out vouchers to hearing-impaired athletes at Special Olympics World Winter Games PyeongChang 2013 so that the athletes can get a free service at the Phonak distributor in their own country.

They also invited the children and parents who use hearing aid or cochlear implant at Pusan International Film Festival to support watching a movie by using Phonak FM system and to give free education & experience on hearing loss. In addition, they are providing analysis and information on deafness and various related products on their blog. All these activities were possible thanks to the Sonova Group's non-profit foundation 'Hear The World' which supports the hearing-impaired people and the prevention of hearing loss. The honorary ambassadors of the foundation include many celebrities such as Placido Domingo (co-founder), Lindsay Lohan and Bryan Adams, and they are actively spreading the importance of hearing.

Shin advises "if one of your family members seem to be getting a hearing loss, you need to encourage she/he to get a hearing aid as soon as possible through communication and proper information about the product. As for our part, it is not the matter of selling the products but to provide a right one through our customized service. We can confidently say that we are proud to be the best in the industry who has passion and professional knowledge on hearing instrument."
Phonak Korea has diverse product lines including In-The-Ear (ITE), Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) and Behind-The-Ear (BTE), and their 3D Printing technology realizes a perfect product from modeling, scanning, rendering to quality test as Shin often says "not all the hearing aids are the same". 

Phonak Korea also introduced 'Phonak Care' designed for the loss of hearing instrument for the first time in the industry. People can easily lose it due to its tiny size but Phonak Care, in cooperation with LIG, guarantees an excellent customer care service from regular check on the product to the cases of loss, damage and stolen. 

Goal to double the domestic market share within 5 years
Introducing the industry standard to contribute for national health

Shin, who likes to provide the very best products only, has ambition to grow Phonak Korea to be No. 1 in the domestic market in 3 years, and to double the market share in 5 years based on Phonk's integrated technology and services. Shin is determined to make a firm position in the market and to contribute for improvement of national health by introducing the industry standard.
