아픔은 곧 나눔이 됐다

Part.1
2009년, 인생이 바뀌었다. 생각지도 못한 암에 걸리고 난 뒤 좌절하기 보단 세상을 좀 더 다르게 볼 수 있는 시각을 얻었다. 병을 얻었다는 것은 분명 인간에게 두려움과 직면하는 순간이지만 화가 홍성은은 그 이외의 것을 보기위해 생각의 틀을 깨버렸다. 
아픔의 굴곡은 그에게 연륜이라는 나이테와 같이 넓은 시야, 넓은 가슴을 갖게 되는 계기가 됐다. 

덕분에 그의 화폭도 넓어졌다. 화가 홍성은의 넓어진 시각으로 본 세상이 캔버스에 그려지면서 그의 시각을 우리는 간접적으로 전달 받을 수 있게 됐다. 이는 화가가 존재하는 이유와 부합하며, 왜 예술가들이 우리 삶에 필요한 가를 증명하고 있다. 

Part.2

꿈꾸는 자아, 실상속의 허상, 마음의 소리, 시간여행…그가 지금까지 작품에 선물한 이름이다. 시리즈마다 이름은 달라졌지만 그 맥은 하나라는 그는 희망을 표현하고 함께 희망을 공유하고 싶다는 생각으로 지금까지 작품을 완성해왔다. 

아픔이 있기 전과 후, 세상을 바라보는 시각의 확장을 빼고는 작품은 항상 그가 생각하는 희망에 대해 표현돼 왔다. 
생사의 기로에 놓였을 때도 희망을 표현하는 작품이 있었기에 고비를 쉽게 넘길 수 있었을 것이다. 그리고 이제 그의 작품은 연륜의 나이테가 켜켜이 쌓여 다른 사람들에게 희망을 전하고 있다. 

Part.3
최근 그의 작품 시리즈의 제목은 ‘시간여행’이다. 나를 찾아 떠나는 여행을 하면서 느낀 감정과 생각을 정리에 캔버스에 올렸다는 이번 시리즈는 찰나의 순간을 캐치해 작품에 올리면서 작가의 감정이 더욱 확대 표현됐다. 
또한, 무의식을 바탕으로 그 위에 싹을 틔운다는 컨셉으로 추상적인 작품을 완성해가며 어렵지 않게 작품의 감정을 느낄 수 있도록 표현하고 있다. 
마음을 비우고 진솔하게 표현하는 방법을 깨달으면서 예술은 어렵지 않다는 것을 직접 실천해나가고 있으며, 작품을 통해 관객과의 소통을 이뤄가고 있다.

봉사활동에도 적극적이다. 자신이 입원했던 병동의 암환우들의 미술치료를 시작으로 마포경찰서 선도위원회 심사위원 및 대만, 인도 봉사 활동을 추진하고 있는 그는 작품을 통해 발생하는 수익을 모두 봉사활동에 사용하고 있다. 인도에 도서관을 지어주기도 하고, 컴퓨터를 기증하기도 했으며, 아이들의 심리를 그림으로 치유해주기도 한다. 자신이 할 수 있는 것이 있다면 그들과 함께 나누고자 하는 화가 홍성은의 또 다른 표현법이었다.

현재까지 개인전 16회, 그 중 미국에서 4회를 전시하고 150여회의 단체전에 참여하며 관객과의 소통창구를 넓히고 있는 그의 최종 목표는 지금하고 있는 나눔이라고 전한다. 이미 목표에 도달해 나눔을 추구하는 그가 최종 목표를 나눔이라고 말하는 이유를 생각해보면 힘이 닿을 때까지 나눔을 놓지 않겠다는 강한 의지가 담겨 있는 것으로 해석된다. 
왜 나눔을 해야 하는지, 그에 대한 확고한 의지를 어떻게 표현할 것인지에 대해 직접 실천하며 보여주고 있는 홍성은 화가.
예술가로서의 역할과 인간으로서의 역할에 충실하며, 제7일안식일예수재림교인으로서 하나님의 사랑을 전하기 위해 그는 오늘도 작품에 매진하고 있다. 

 

The pain becomes shared

Part.1

2009, life changed. Having a cancer made me see the world in a rather different perspective than depressed. 

An illness gives us a fear but artist Hong broke the frame of his thinking to see the beyond. The curve of the pain became a momentum for her to have a bigger picture and wider heart. Her canvas became wider also thanks to the pain she suffered. And the widened view was expressed on the canvas and we can indirectly feel what it says. This is the reason artists exist and proves why we need them in life. 

Part.2

Dreaming ego, illusion in reality, sound of heart, time travel... these are the names she gave to her works as a gift. The names varied according to a series but the meaning was one. It is her moto to express hope and share it through her works. Whether it is before and after the pain, the works were always about hope except its expansion in the way Hong sees the world. 

She could overcome the critical moment thanks to her works about hope and the hope is now traveling to the hearts of others like the annual ring of a tree.

Part.3

Time Travel is the title of her recent series. The emotion and feeling she found in the journey to her inner-self were delivered onto the canvas expansively through the moment she gripped. 

Also, the abstract works like the buds appearing in unconsciousness were expressed to deliver its sentiment.

Hong emptied her mind to show her honest self and communicates with audience on the fact that art is not a difficult thing to share. 

Part.4

Hong is as mush into voluntary service as art. She gave art therapy to cancer patients, is active as judge of Mapo Police Disciplinary Committee, participates in voluntary service in India, and donates all the profits from her works to society. She built a library in India, donated computers, and gave art therapy for children. She shares everything she has or she can with other people. 

Part.5

Hong has held 16 solo exhibitions (4 times in the US) and participated in 150 group exhibitions. She kept saying on the importance of sharing and this might be the driving force of her life and of her art works. She has a firm will of sharing, of why she has to do it, and of how it can be expressed.

Hong is honest in her roles as an artist and human, and as a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church, she is passionately active on her works to spread the love of God.
