정해진 방향을 제시하는 대신,
버팀목의 역할로서 자유를 향한 교육의 토대 만들기

우리 아이에게 알맞은 ‘올바른 교육법’에 대한 갈증이 더욱 심해지고 있는 요즘이다. 더불어 갈증에 대한 목마름의 시선을 외부로 돌렸을 때, 마냥 평준화된 교육법을 적용시키기엔 내 아이가 너무나 버거워하진 않을까, 혹은 뒤쳐지는 것이 아닐까라는 고민을 부모들은 줄곧 해왔을 것이다. 월간 파워코리아는 그에 대한 해답을 사단법인 한국 루돌프 슈타이너 인지학 연구센터에서 시행하고 있는 발도르프 교육에서 구하고자 했다. 그리고 자녀 교육에 있어서 적용의 범위, 속도의 문제로 고민하고 있을 부모들에게 올바른 방향을 제시해줄 것이라는 기대를 안고 출발했던 취재는 결과적으로 양질의 답을 얻을 수 있었다고 기자는 회고한다.

주입식 교육의 한계성을 이야기하다
매해, 겨울의 초입에 치러지는 11월의 수능이 올해도 막을 내렸다. 그리고 오랫동안 준비해왔던 시험에 임하기 위해, 바삐 시험장을 들어가는 학생들의 반대편에는 현재의 교육 시스템에 문제를 제기하는 학생들의 수능반대시위로 대조를 이룬 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 그들이 제기한 문제점의 가장 큰 키워드는 바로 주입식 공부에서 비롯된 ‘노이로제’와 불합리하다고 주장하는 ‘선택의 폭’이었다. 인지학 연구센터의 이정희 박사는 이에 대해 다음과 같이 말했다. “주입식 공부는 모두가 알고 있다시피, 창의적인 것을 새롭게 만들어낼 수 없는 환경 그 자체입니다. 즉, 답습과 재생산을 반복하는 것이죠. 수능도 마찬가지입니다. 수능 시험 출제가 아무리 창의성 발현에 중점을 둔다고 해도 결과적으로 압박에 의한 시험이라고 밖에 표현할 수 없어요. 또한, 세상의 흐름이 물질화·기계화 되어가고 있는 점을 감안할 때, 창의성이 부재된다면 사람은 곧 황폐해질 수밖에 없는 것입니다. 아이들의 교육 그 자체가 창의성을 최대한 이끌어 낼 수 있도록 뒷받침 되어야할 이 때에, 주입식 교육은 곧 미래의 부재라고 말씀드릴 수 있죠.” 이노베이션이 화두로 떠오르고 있는 요즘, 창의성의 고갈은 곧 사람의 자유를 제한시키는 것이라 할 수 있다. 미래는 곧 창의성을 중심에 둔 게임이며 그 속의 판타지를 재료로 삼아야 하는 시점에 일일이 정해진 교육단계가 위험한 이유도 바로 그 때문이다. “사람의 자유란 모든 것을 마음껏 할 수 있는 자유라기보다 구김 없이 자신의 상상력을 발휘하고 무언가를 선택해서 결정할 수 있는 내면의 힘이라 봅니다. 그리고 그것은 당연히 교육에서 담보해야 합니다. 헌데, 우리는 주입식 학습의 교육 환경을 가지고 있기 때문에 한계점에 도달된 셈입니다. 이것은 세계시민으로 나아가는 길목에서 심각한 걸림돌이 된다고 봐요. 답습한 공부형태로 관문을 통과하여 일과 과제가 주어진다 해도 그런 사람은 본래 지니고 있어야 하는 순수 열정과 자신의 일이 매치될 수 없기 때문입니다.”

느림의 행보가 바른 성장의 지름길임을
발도르프 교육학의 근원인 인지학(人智學, Anthroposophy)을 토대로 육아의 본질을 이해하고 건강한 교육관을 정립하는데 주력하고 있는 이 박사가 가장 중요시하는 점, 그것은 바로 ‘놀이’였다. “수능의 좋은 결과를 위해 유치원부터 조기학습(지적학습)을 받기 시작하는 아이들의 상상력은 성장과 함께 반비례하여 점점 제한됩니다. 저희 발도르프 유아교육에서 0-7세까지 아이들의 놀이를 중요시 여기는 점도 이 때문이죠. 여기서 놀이는 단순한 오락과 게임을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 아이 스스로 몰두하고 몰입하는 순간, 집중력과 창의성을 발휘할 수 있는 순수 활동의 기회가 마음껏 확보되는 것을 말합니다.” 그렇다면 본질적인 놀이는 과연 언제부터 일어나는 것일까. 이 박사는 그 시점을 태어나면서부터 자연스레 일어나는 것이라고 말한다. 덧붙여 어린 아이들이 기기, 뒤집기 등의 근본적인 신체 발달이 그들에겐 곧 놀이 그 자체이지만 이러한 중요과정을 생략한 채, 각종 키즈 카페 및 놀이학교에만 관심이 집중되는 것에 이 박사는 우려의 목소리를 표했다. “근원적인 문제점을 되짚어 보자면, 기존의 학습법이 세계화되어야 한다고 생각해요. 그 끝의 시험이라는 단계는 합리적인 채점을 위해 단답식으로 문제를 출제할 수밖에 없는 것이고 이것은 곧 외우기 공부를 부추기죠. 즉, 창조적 상상력이 굳어버리는 것입니다.” 1919년 루돌프 슈타이너 박사가 교육예술이라는 새로운 교육의 패러다임을 제시한 이래, 발도르프 교육은 보편적인 발달을 토대로 자신의 고유성 발달에 좀 더 큰 중점을 둔 교육으로 자리 잡았다. 앞서 말한 취학 전까지 놀이의 중요성 뿐 아니라 그 이후 감성을 기르는 시기(7세~14세)와 판단력을 형성하는 시기(14세~21세)를 차례로 두는 교육, 즉 바른 인성을 담고 높은 도덕성을 가지고 삶을 살아갈 수 있는 느림의 교육을 말하고 있었던 것이다.

“슈타이너 인지학 연구센터에서는 올 하반기에 ‘나임 부모성장학교’라는 모임을 탄생시켰습니다. 아이들은 부모의 거울이기에, 부모가 곧 교육환경이며 울타리라고 비유할 수 있어요. 어떻게 울타리가 쳐져 있느냐에 따라 아이들은 그들 나름대로 성장해갈 수 있는 것입니다. 당연히 부모의 교육관 및 양육관이 바로 서야 아이들도 중심을 잡고 성장할 수 있겠죠. 무언가 아이를 위해 안하면 도태된다는 것을 애써 의식하기보다 아이에게도 자신의 길이 있다는 것을 믿고 인정하는 태도가 더욱 중요하다고 봅니다. 아이들은 부모를 통해서 세상에 태어난 것이지, 부모의 판박이 또는 소유물이라고 볼 수 없는 것처럼 말입니다.”

Instead of introducing another set direction,
creating an educational foundation for freedom as the supporting role

School parents' thirst for a right educational method is getting stronger than ever.
But then they throw a question whether their children can adopt to a new environment at the same time. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has tried to find an answer through 'Center for Anthroposophy in Korea' which is carrying out the Baldorf Education. And we found a quality answer that can be a right direction for the parents who are eager to know its application scope and speed.

Talking about the limitations of learning by rote
The College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) was finally finished last month. While the students were entering an examination site, a bunch of people, who brought up problems about the exam, was protesting against the CSAT across the street. The problems were about 'neurotic obsessions' and 'selection scope' which were caused by the current rote learning. The doctor of the Center Junghee Lee said "rote learning, as we all know, only provides an unable environment for students to create something new. In other words, it just repeats the stereotype. CSAT is the same thing. Even if they say the exam is built on revealing one's creativity it is the same old exam for pressure at the end. If there's no creativity, we are just likely to be devastated by materialism and mechanism. Therefore, we can say that rote learning is nothing but a lack of future." 

Innovation is the topic nowadays and lacking the creativity can limit one's freedom to think. The future is about the creativity game that can conjure up one's fantasy and that is why the current rote learning is perilous. Lee said "Freedom is not to do everything at one's will but it's the inner power to call one's imagination and to decide what to do with one's life by oneself. And education has the responsibility to provide the very foundation for it. But as you can see, our education has now reached the critical point and this is a serious obstacle for us to mover forward to the world stage and leave students being lost of their passion in life."

The fastest way is to go slow
The source of Baldorf Education is Anthroposophy. Based on this philosophy, Lee takes 'Play' the most important thing for building a healthy and correct education. Lee said "our children are forced to start preparing for CSAT from nursery school and during this wrong process they are losing their imagination. That's why we, the Baldorf Nursery Education for 0 to 7 years old children, take 'Playing with Children' as the most important educational philosophy. The 'Playing' in this terms doesn't mean just an entertainment but the activities to imagine, create and focus." 

Then from when the intrinsic play occurs? Lee said that it occurs the moment they were born. The physical development like crawling and upside downing their body initially is the Play but many parents send their children to prevalent kids cafes and play schools by skipping this stage. Lee said "the existing teaching methods have to be globalized. At the end of the exam, students just learn a skill to pick a set answer." 

Since Dr. Rudolf Steiner introduced a new educational paradigm as 'educational art', Baldorf Education focused on developing one's inherent ability. From the 'Paly' stage to 'Building Sensibility(7~14)' and 'Forming Judgement(14~21), Baldorf Education tells a 'Slow Education' that gives children to grow their personality and morality.

Lee said "Center for Anthroposophy in Korea has recently introduced 'Naim Parents Growth School'. Children are the mirror of their parents and parents are the educational environment and fence for their children. Children are growing based on how the fence is built. Therefore, parents' correct educational and nurturing philosophy can make their children grow in balance. Instead of their anxious psychology that their children might fell behind if they do not follow what everybody follows, they need to be aware the fact that children have their own personality and ways. Parents giving a birth doesn't mean that their children are their possession."
