포엔사(FourN4)는 생산 및 테스트 장비 전문 업체로, 차후 계획 중인 사업의 초점을 IoT(사물인터넷)에 맞춘 케이스이다. 사물과 사물이 서로 교류하여 새로운 데이터를 만들어내고 그 결과물이 다시 많은 이들이 사용 중인 스마트폰 및 디스플레이 장치에 재가공되는 IoT산업은 향후, 전 산업 기반에 걸쳐 중추적인 역할을 하게 될 것으로 기대되고 있다. 그 기로에서 월간 파워코리아는 자사 쇼핑몰 사이트(아모고나닷컴_http://www.amogona.com)를 통해 좀 더 대중적인 소통을 하고자 하는 박지암 대표와 만나, 그가 내리는 사물인터넷의 정의와 앞으로의 계획에 대한 이야기들을 들어보았다.  

바야흐로 사물인터넷(IoT)의 시대가 도래하다.
사물인터넷이 국내에 소개된지 이제 삼 년째, 박 대표의 생각이 궁금했다.
“우선 사물인터넷이라 말하면 낯설어하는 이들이 상당하기에, 저는 ‘사물인터넷이 무엇인가’에 대한 정보를 제공하는 것에 주안점을 많이 두었습니다. 처음 IoT산업을 인지하기 시작한 때에도 이 부문이 앞으로 우리 경제에 어떤 영향을 미칠 수 있을지 고려함과 동시에, 그 긍정적인 영향을 함께 알려야 할 필요성도 느꼈기 때문이죠. 그래서 자사가 함께 운영 중인 아모고나닷컴에서는 일단 홍보 차원에서 우리가 알고 있는 정보를 수집하고 외국의 선진화된 정보를 페이지에 오픈하는 형식으로 진행하고 있어요. 향후, 사물인터넷이 가지고 있는 높은 성장성을 함께 보여주면서 제품도 접할 수 있도록 하는 것입니다.”

사물 자체를 이야기할 때, 아무래도 우리가 의식하게 되는 특징은 실제로 눈에 보이고 직접 만질 수 있다는 것을 들 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이러한 특징들을 기반으로 IoT 산업이 더욱 의미 있는 것은 체감 가능한 사물을 필두로 지식 정보를 함께 전달 받을 수 있다는 것이 아닐까. 박 대표도 기자의 생각에 공감했다. “지난 몇 년간, 스마트폰이라는 휴대 가능한 PC가 참 많은 사랑을 받았죠. 하지만 스마트폰을 사용하는 모든 이들이 느끼고 있듯, 이쪽 관련 사업은 사이클이 상당히 빠르게 지나가는 편입니다. 저희가 사물인터넷을 처음 주목하게 된 이유도 스마트폰이 언젠가는 산업 군에서 도태될 것이라는 예견을 하고 대체할 산업을 찾으면서 시작되었던 것이죠. 해외에서는 그 장점들을 인지하고 있고 이미 디바이스도 구축이 되어 있습니다.”  

일상 속, 효율적인 데이터 활용에 주목하다.
포엔사에서 주목하고 있는 사물인터넷의 핵심은 디바이스 구축과 그에 따른 데이터 활용이다. 앞서 이야기했듯, 발생된 새로운 종류의 정보들을 마케팅에 활용하는 것에 의미를 두고 있는 것이다. “예를 들어 기자님이 웨어러블[wearable]을 차고 심박도를 체크한다고 가정했을 때, 만약 좋지 않은 데이터가 나왔다면 직접 병원을 방문하여 진단을 받을 수 있겠죠. 그렇게 모인 데이터를 A라는 업체가 수집 해간다면 그 사람들은 자료를 가지고 마케팅을 할 수가 있는 것입니다. 이를테면 이렇습니다. 기자님이 어느 지역에 사시는데 심장이 안 좋다더라 라는 리서칭된 통계데이터를 통해 그 지역 사람들을 대상으로 건강식품을 만들 수도 있고 환경적인 시설을 구축할 수도 있을 겁니다. 즉, 적극적으로 홍보할 수 있는 마케팅 상품에 좀 더 유용하게 쓰일 수 있는 것이죠.” 내가 만든 데이터를 다른 사람에게 판매하고 데이터를 산 사람들은 장점을 흡수하여 새로운 아이디어를 창출할 수 있는 마케팅 전략, 박 대표가 집중하고 있는 디바이스 개발은 건강, 날씨, 운동과 같은 각각의 기능으로 데이터를 수집할 수 있는 시대를 바라보고 있었다. 

변화를 두려워하지 않는 고객 만족 서비스
사실 사물인터넷이 국내에 맞닿기 이전에도 관련 디바이스들은 분명 존재했었다. 다만 IoT라는 개념 자체가 정립되어 있지 않다보니, 낯설게 느끼는 것 일뿐 사물은 우리 주변 그 자리에 쉽게 발견할 수 있는 것들 중의 하나였다. 

“저희도 사물인터넷의 분명한 개념 정립을 위해, 각종 전시회에 참석하며 알리는 활동에 좀 더 집중을 하고 있습니다. 특히 디바이스를 개발하는 것에 좀 더 초점을 맞추고 있는 저희로써는 IoT에 대한 정확한 인지를 하고 있는 소비자도 필요하기 때문이죠. 그래서 직접 디바이스들을 전시하여 이러한 형식으로 구동되는 것이 사물인터넷이라는 것을 알려주는 활동 자체가 관건이라 보고 있습니다. 물론 마냥 소개되는 것만으로는 부족할 수가 있다고 보기에, 저희 회사 식구들이 직접 사용을 해본 느낌과 방법들을 아모고나닷컴을 통해 소개도 함께 진행하고 있죠. 최대한 소비자가 편안하게 사용할 수 있게끔 장단점들을 과감하게 오픈하고 있습니다.” 어떻게 보면 박 대표가(국내에서) 낯선 분야인 IoT산업을 선택했다는 것은 하나의 모험이자 도전이라고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 적극적인 고객과의 소통을 모토로 미래 산업인 IoT를 신규사업으로 채택했다는 것만으로도 반대편의 대중들은 좀 더 생활 속의 사물들을 유심하게 바라보는 계기가 되지 않을까. 사물들 간의 지속적인 커뮤니케이션과 새롭게 창출될 아이디어를 통해서 말이다.

The advent of IoT
It has been three years since IoT has been introduced to Korea and I was curious about Park's idea on this. "Many people don't know much about IoT yet and that's why I focused on introducing IoT itself to Korean people. When we were in the very first stage to perceive IoT industry, I thought how it could affect our economy and felt the necessities of letting people know about its positive effect. When we talk about things, we usually talk about tangible things which we can see and touch. The core of IoT which FourN4 is paying attention to is building devices and their date use which means that they use newly generated information for marketing. "For example, if you wear a device to check your heart beat and it shows a bad data you will take it as a sign that you need to go to hospital. Then an A company collects your date to use it for their marketing strategy. In other words, if you obtain a researched data of a certain area where people who live there had really bad health problems, you can start a wellbeing food business or building eco-friendly facilities in the area. Therefore, IoT can be more useful for marketing." 

IoT enables people to sell their data to other people who need it and the people can use the date for their marketing strategy. Park is focusing on developing the devices related to health, weather and exercise.

Excellent customer services without a fear of change
In fact, the related IoT devices were already seen before IoT was introduced to Korea. It is just the concept of IoT that is not established properly but things were always around us. 

"we are participating in various events to establish the concept of IoT clearly. Because we are focused on developing related products, we need the customers who have a proper understanding about IoT. So it is very important for us to display our devices to let people know about what IoT is and how it works. And we just don't introduce the device but we use it ourselves and put its operation methods and feedback on our website. We openly discuss about the pros and cons of the device so that our customers can use it more practically."

The fact that Park chose IoT business which is relatively new in Korea can be a venture and challenge in a way. Yet, Park's vision on IoT can inspire people to see things differently through communication and newly generated ideas.
