[Top Issue] Korea Medical Institute / chief director Kyujang Lee

Korea Medical Institute, the national health enterprise that practices 'customer service' and 'social contribution'

'Real-name medical examiner system' to achieve zero misdiagnosis rate, providing the very best customer service

The name 'Korea Medical Institute(KMI)' is not unfamiliar to office workers. KMI is the epitome of medical examination and Korea's representative health care institution established in October 1985. It is remarkable that a medical corporation can keep alive for 30 years considering the fact that the customer trust is top priority for the medical industry to survive. KMI recently has received '2014 Korea Communication Management Awards' and has been doing various social contribution activities. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met KMI's chief director Kyujang Lee and heard about their 'customer service' and 'social contribution'.

A variety of social contribution activities into practice

KMI held 'Loving Briquettes Share Event' at 104 Village, Junggye-dong, Seoul on 22 last month and delivered 20,000 briquettes to the disadvantaged and elderly people living alone. The event was co-hosted by Babsang Community Briquette Bank and participated by 80 executives and staff members of KMI including Lee himself. They have been doing social service activities and free medical service every year since 2007. Also, they have been donating for The Korea heart Foundation for 10 years so that the children who cannot afford the operation can have it. They are giving support to the researchers who are having difficulty in raising research funds through the process of public invitation and recommendation so that they can have the necessary budget. They also have been paying the rent of 'Neutinamu Gongbang(zelkova workshop)' where disadvantaged children study. In addition, they are granting scholarship for multicultural families, sending medical teams to disaster area, and supporting the joint wedding of immigrant workers through Korea Professional Baseball Alumni Association.

Lee said "companies should return their profits back to society. National level help and support are limited due to the regulation which, as a result, leaves some of the disadvantaged out of its benefit. This is the part where companies have to fill up and that's why we are returning 10% of our profits back to society."

Leading the support for underprivileged by '3:3:3:1 management philosophy'

Leading the staff welfare and communication, providing excellent customer service

KMI's social contribution activities are based on Lee's '3:3:3:1 management philosophy'. In his inauguration speech, Lee said that 30% of the profits would be used for staff welfare, 30% for medical equipments, 30% for improving the financial structure and 10% for social contribution.

But this is not only Lee's decision but the executives and staff members also supported Lee. In the background of the decision lies Lee's 'Communication Management'. KMI recently won '2014 Korea Communication Management Awards' and 'Good Work Place Awards' for three times in a row, and 'Global Management Awards in Customer Service Management sector' for four times in a row. They provide various communication programmes for the staff such as new year kick-off meeting training, athletic meeting, department membership training, and workshops according to its rank and position. Also, they open their current revenue and expenditure to the staff for transparent administration and the decision-making processes are practiced by regulations or after discussion between the labor and the management.

Lee's efforts for 'good work place' is based on his self-examination in the medical industry. The public opinion about the Korean medical world is not so good owing to the series of medical accidents and malpractice such as overcharging the hospital bills. But Lee tried to communicate with the staff first in order to regain the public trust.

Lee said "KMI is aiming to be a people's company. We are doing our best so that the public can trust us. We will give out utmost care from the bottom of our heart for each of our customers. If you don't have this heart, you cannot work for the medical industry because customers have to be treated like I treat myself. The staff are the wheels of the hospital. If they are not happy working in their work place, we cannot expect them to give an excellent customer service."

Building medical examination centers nationwide to solve welfare and alienation problems, Opening the market in Changchun, China

'Real-name medical examiner system' to achieve zero misdiagnosis rate, providing the very best customer service

KMI has 4 centers in Gwanghwamun, Yeouido, Gangnam and Suwon, and 3 centers in Daegu, Busan and Gwangju, and has 1,200 staff. Their passion on providing excellent medical services nationwide by top medical team made the company this much big. It was fact that the regional medical service was not provided good enough and the situation is not much different now. If there is no comprehensive medical examination center, patients have to journey up to Seoul and wait for several hours to be treated.

For this, Lee created an environment for the regional residents to receive the same benefit as the residents around the capital city by building comprehensive medical examination center in the metropolitan cities in the provinces. In addition, KMI is providing medical services for overseas Koreans in US and Canada. They are currently planning to build a center in Changchun, China and expecting their medical technology to be recognized globally. Lee said "we will proceed the plan slowly but thoroughly. Our ability is already recognized in Korea and we will do our best to have the same recognition in China." KMI is also planning to open a center in Chungcheong province, Korea.

Lee said that food competes by its taste and cleanliness but medical examination competes by the quality of examination, zero misdiagnosis rate and excellent customer service. KMI has been doing 'Real-name medical examiner system' for 10 years to achieve zero misdiagnosis rate. From simple check-up like blood pressure to complicated check-up like MRI-CT, patients can know who did what examinations so that they can trust the hospital.

Starting at 29 and having 33 years of his passion in the medical industry with 'precision management'

Core management method that promotes new visions and pride of the staff

Lee's core management method is to suggest new paradigm through continuous R&D and challenges and to make the staff proud of what they are doing and have their own vision. Lee started to work in the field when he was 29 and has been walking only one way for 33 years with his philosophy 'precision management'. Lee said that he will give his utmost effort to build infrastructure and system for overseas market. KMI is holding an 'overseas training & system maintenance course for the staff' from 2 to 7 January on the occasion of their thirtieth birthday next year to welcome customers with the refreshed spirit. Lee said that medical personnel have to give their strenuous effort. It is sad that they are fighting each other about medical insurance and that is one of the reasons why the public opinion is not so agreeable. They have to throw away bad customs and find a better way. Lee said that he will not disappoint the public's expectations and will do his best for them to live healthy up to 100 years. Lee and KMI's precision management will keep their status as an advanced medical institute.
