농산물선별기로 지자체들의 고민과 농민들의 고충을 한 번에 해결하다

현재 대한민국은 세계 최고의 IT 국가로 발돋움하여 글로벌 시장에서 한국 기술력의 위상을 떨치고 있다. 하지만 그에 비해 농기계에 대한 연구개발의 성과는 매우 미비한 상태다.  산업화 이후 존폐위기에 처한 농업은 이제 다시금 미래 사회의 새로운 동력으로 평가받고 있는데, 국내에서는 여전히 농업의 가능성을 평가절하 하는 분위기다. 특히 한미 FTA 등으로 국내 농가의 상황은 더욱 열악해진 상태인데, 한시라도 빨리 농기계 개발에 관심을 갖고 농업 경쟁력을 담보해야하겠다. 실제로 타임테크가 선보인 신개념의 농산물 선별기의 경우 다양한 기술의 융합을 통해 기계하나로 1만평 기준 800만원이었던 선별 비용을 혁신적으로 줄여 농가의 부담을 크게 낮추는데 일조했다. 지금 이 순간에도 새로운 농기계 개발에 매진하고 있는 타임테크의 노계훈 대표를 만나 자세한 이야기를 나눠봤다. 

농산물선별기 개발로 농촌 일손 부족 현상에 해법 제시

노계훈 대표는 대학졸업 후 다년간 자동차부품 가공업에 종사해오다 10여 년 전 타임테크를 설립하여 정밀가공을 통한 자동차 엔진부품을 생산해 왔다. 기아자동차와 현대자동차의 협력업체인 타임테크는 특히 6㎛(1㎛은 1/1000mm)이하의 공차만을 허용하는 정밀가공기술을 바탕으로 발란스 샤프트 등 핵심 엔진부품을 생산하여 까다롭기로 정평이 난 대기업들과 높은 신뢰를 쌓아 왔다. 그러던 중 노 대표는 고향에서 어렵게 농사를 짓고 있는 부모님들의 노고를 덜어 드릴 방법을 고심해오다 농산물선별기의 대한 아이디어를 얻게 되었다. “부모님들이 경남 창녕군에서 마늘 농사를 짓고 계신데, 수확 후 통마늘을 일일이 손으로 분류해 마대에 담는 것을 보고 제품 개발의 필요성을 느끼게 되었습니다. 이후 다양한 연구를 통해 기계에 넣기만 하면 자동으로 크기를 분류해 포장까지 해주는 농산물선별기를 성공적으로 개발할 수 있었습니다.”

타임테크는 처음부터 ‘오차 없는 정밀선별’을 가장 큰 목표로 삼아 제품을 개발해 왔는데, 선별 사이즈와 선별 속도를 농가의 상황에 맞도록 다양하게 조절 할 수 있도록 고려했다. 통마늘의 경우 무게와 모양에 따라 5단계로 선별이 가능하고, 전 공정의 자동화로 바로 상품화가 가능해 졌다. 또한 이송체인이 늘어나도 일정한 장력을 유지시켜 주는 체인구동방식 을 채택하여 장시간 사용에도 일정한 속도 유지가 가능하고, 이송살대의 특수표면처리로 겉피가 부드러운 농산물도 흠이 나지 않아 높은 상품성을 유지할 수 있다. 더불어 바이브레이션 모터를 통한 편심 샤프트의 적용으로 진동을 주어 흙이 묻어있는 마늘의 경우에도 선별과정에서 깨끗하게 흙을 비롯한 불순물이 제거될 수 있도록 설계되었다. “하루 10시간 기준 규격화된 20kg 통마늘 망을 평균 1000~1200망 생산해 낼 수 있는 제품입니다. 또한 한 농가에서 한 대만 설치하면 간단한 선별 간격조정을 통해 대추, 감, 감자, 양파, 사과,  등의 농작물에도 폭넓게 사용 하실 수 있도록 다목적용으로 개발하였습니다.” 타임테크의 농산물선별기가 일찍이 농민들 사이에서 입소문이 나기 시작하면서 창녕군, 합천군, 달성군 등의 지자체에서 공급 사업을 추진하기에 이르렀고, 현재는 마늘 주산지에 제품이 보급되어 농민들의 일손을 보다 혁신적으로 돕고 있다. 

밭작물 기계 개발 본격화하며 농기계 전문 회사로 거듭날 것

타임테크는 지난해 특허를 획득한 뿌리 작물 선별장치를 비롯해 농산물용 자루 운반채, 농산물 선별 장치에 적용되는 선별판 가이드, 선별기용 상향식 공급 장치(아래서 공급시), 선별기용 공급 장치(위에서 공급시), 농산물 선별장치, 마늘 선별장치용 선별판 등 총 7가지의 특허 기술을 집약하여 농산물선별기를 개발할 수 있었다. 최근에는 그러한 높은 기술력을 인정받아 수많은 지자체들로부터 기계개발 요청이 쇄도하고 있는데, 향후 땅속작물수확기와 쪽마늘선별기 등 다양한 밭작물기계 개발을 본격화한다는 계획이다. “현재는 새로운 버전의 마늘 수확기가 개발 완료 단계에 이르렀는데, 멀칭이 되어 있는 마늘밭에서 비닐을 제거하지 않고도 자동으로 마늘 줄기를 절단하고 땅속에 있는 통마늘의 흙을 깨끗이 털어내 주는 제품으로 인건비 절감의 효과가 더 클 것으로 기대하고 있습니다.” 

신제품은 이미 경상남도와, 경상북도에 농산물선별기 계약 체결을 앞두고 있고, 2015년에 공급 될 예정이다. 타임테크는 이를 위해 농기계로 제품 등록을 마치고 현재 농업기계협동조합의 안전성능 테스트를 앞두고 있다. “국가자격증인 농기계 자격을 취득하여 농촌에서 꼭 필요로 하는 제품들을 개발해 나갈 계획입니다. 현재는 자동차 부품 사업체 옆에 농기계 전문 회사를 위한 땅을 구입하여 공장을 지을 예정으로, 내년에는 자격증을 취득해 군 특례병을 선발하여 사업을 더욱 활성화 할 방침입니다.” 

그동안 우리 농촌의 일손 부족 현상을 해결하고 인건비 부담을 낮추기 위해 노력해 온 타임테크의 노계훈 대표, 앞으로도 더욱 혁신적인 제품으로 고통 받고 있는 농민들의 시름을 덜어주기를 바라오며 나아가 대한민국이 세계최고의 농업 국가로 발돋움하는데 초석을 다져주기를 기대한다.

Solving problems with a farm produce sorting machine

S. Korea has now become the world's top IT country. But the fruits from R&D on agricultural machine is still weak. Once extinguishing agriculture since industrialization is slowly recognized as a driving force for the future but Korea seems to be still devaluating it. As Korea-US FTA weakens the domestic situation we need an urgent interest in competitiveness through developing the relevant machine. In this atmosphere Timetech introduced a new farm produce sorting machine and reduced the cost of sorting significantly which was $8,000 per 33,000 square meter. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Timetech CEO Noh, Gye-hoon and heard about the details.

Suggesting a solution for rural labor shortage with an innovative machine

Noh had been working in the automobile parts industry and established Timetech 10 years ago to produce the car engine parts through precision processing. Timetech is an Hyundai and Kia motors' cooperative firm. The company uses precision processing skills which tolerate only below 6㎛(1㎛은 1/1000mm) difference to produce core engine parts such as balance shaft and gained a trust from picky major companies. During all those time, Noh had been thinking about how to lessen the labor for his farmer parents and came up with the idea of a sorting machine. Noh said "my parents are farming in Changnyeong County and I saw they sorted the whole bulb of garlic manually and I felt I had to do something. After numerous trials I eventually invented the machine which sorts and packs garlics automatically according to its size." 

Noh made the machine to sort garlic precisely without any error and to adjust in accordance with the size and speed. It is possible to sort the whole bulb of garlic in five stages based on weight and shape and the garlic can be packed for commercialization on the spot. The machine is loaded with the chain drive system so that it can maintain tension and constant speeds and the transfer shaft is covered with special surface treatment to prevent products from scratches and cuts. Also applied is an off-center shaft through the vibration motor so that the machine can shake off the dust on the garlic. Noh said "based on 10 hours per day it can produce 1,000 to 1,200 bags of a standardized 20kg whole garlic bag. Each farm needs only one machine as it can sorts almost everything from jujube, persimmon, potatoes, onions and apples by simply adjusting the space." As the popularity of the machine spread out from mouth to mouth local governments of Changnyeong County, Hapcheon County and Dalseong County launched a supply project and currently the machine is being used in the chief producing districts for garlic.

To be reborn as an agricultural machinery company

Timetech could develop the sorting machine by combining seven patented skills including root crops sorting device, sack transporter, sorting plate guide, bottom-up sorting device(when supplied from below), sorting supply device(when supplied from above), farm produce sorting device, and garlic sorting plate. With inundated inquiries about new machines from many local governments Noh is now planing to develop machines for harvesting and upland field crop. He said "a new version of garlic harvesting machine is almost finished its form and it cuts the stem of garlic without removing the vinyl and shake off the dust that attached to the garlic." Noh has already signed with North & South Gyeongsang Provinces and the machine is expected to be supplied from 2015. He has finished product registration and is waiting for safety test from National Agricultural Machines Cooperatives Federation. Noh said "I'm planning to obtain a national agricultural machine certificate to develop relevant machines. I also bought a land right next to my automobile parts company to build a factory for the machines. I will get the certificate next year and activate the business in honest by recruiting skilled soldiers." 

Noh has been contributing to reduce the rural labor shortage and cost. Power Korea wishes that Timetech would lay the foundation for Korea to be the world's top agricultural country.
