두 달 만에 영어를 듣고 말하는 기적의 학습법

평등한 영어교육 기회 마련 위해 나눔 노력

국제화 시대가 다가왔다. 영어는 제1외국어의 위상을 나날이 견고히 하고 있으며 대학생을 비롯한 수많은 학생들이 토익 고득점을 위해 매일 피땀 흘리며 공부하고 있다. 그러나 시험 점수를 잘 받아놓아도 영어를 우리말처럼 하지 못하는 경우가 훨씬 많기 때문에 막상 실제 업무에 적용하려고 해도 큰 어려움이 뒤따른다. 우리나라의 보편적 영어 교육법에 반기를 들며 두 달 만에 영어를 자유롭게 이야기할 수 있는 학습법이 등장해 화제를 모으고 있다. (주)영어나눔교육기획개발원의 나경연 대표를 만나 이야기를 들어보았다.

‘먼저 듣고 말하는’ 영어 학습법의 혁신

2개월간의 집중 연수 캠프 프로그램

(주)영어나눔교육기획개발원의 나경연 대표는 최근 경기도 파주 영어마을에서 ‘자연스피치 잉글리쉬 캠프’ 입학식을 가졌다. 총 2개월 과정, 12월 말에 종료되는 프로그램으로 저소득층 학생 포함 20명을 선발하여 아이들에게 영어 말하기 실력을 높여주는 캠프다. ‘자연스피치 잉글리쉬 캠프’의 교육 방식은 일반적인 학원 교육의 방식과 다르다. 많은 학원들이 단어와 문법 교육을 먼저 시작하는 반면, 모국어를 배우는 과정과 마찬가지로 먼저 듣고, 말하고, 읽고 쓴 후에 문법을 공부해야 한다는 것이다.

“한국 사람들은 이때까지 학원을 가더라도 100% 다 안 듣고 말하는 습관을 들여왔습니다. 한국말도 끝까지 안 들으면 문제가 생기는데 영어도 마찬가지죠. 2개월 과정 중에서 한국 학생들의 습관을 고치기 위해 원어민 말을 100% 듣게 해준 후 말을 하는 과정입니다. 듣기 과정을 먼저 2주, 그 다음 말하는 과정을 거칩니다”

‘자연스피치 잉글리쉬 캠프’의 정식 수업은 오전 9시부터 오후 1시다. 점심시간 한 시간을 가진 이후에는 프리 토킹(Free Talking)시간으로 각자의 수준에 맞춰 원하는 주제로 원하는 선생님과 함께 즐겁게 이야기를 한다. 어떠한 경우에도 캠프 안에서 한국말을 사용하게 되면 퇴소조치가 내려진다. 영어마을 안에서도 한국말 사용이 자유로운 분위기가 형성되어 영어 교육이 형식적인 과정으로 빠지는 것을 우려했기 때문이다.

영어 캠프 통해 ‘나눔교육’에 대한 열망 실천

나 대표는 상담심리 석사과정을 전공하고 일을 하던 중 캐나다에 영어를 배우러 갔다가 ‘자연스피치 잉글리쉬’ 프로그램을 만나게 되었다. 손영삼 원장이 캐나다에서 10년 동안 한국 학생들을 한 명씩 공부시켜서 이 프로그램을 만든 것이다. 나 대표는 손 원장의 프로그램을 직접 체험하기 시작했고 한 달 정도 지나자 자연히 대화가 가능해졌다. 그 이후 나 대표가 합류하면서 그룹 교육을 위해 학생들을 모으기 시작했다. 이후 한국에 돌아와 캐나다에서 만들었던 커리큘럼을 그대로 적용하여 2012년부터 본격적인 수업을 시작한 것이다.

캐나다에서 적용하더라도 충분히 성공적일 수 있었던 커리큘럼을 나 대표가 굳이 한국으로 들여오려는 시도를 하고 있는 데에는 ‘나눔교육’에 대한 열망이 큰 역할을 차지했다. 사교육의 대표 격인 고급영어교육을 받지 못하는 저소득층 아이들에게도 공평한 배움의 기회가 열려야 한다는 믿음 때문이었다.

“캐나다에 있는 학생들은 다 부유층이잖아요. 저희가 어려운 학생들을 많이 보내서 공부 시키려고 하고 있지만, 한국에서 대중적으로 보급시키면 일반 학생들도 캐나다에 안 가도 충분히 영어를 말할 수 있고 기러기 가족을 만들지 않아도 됩니다. 캐나다에서 2~30년 된 사람들을 만나도 웃음 없이 사는 사람들이 너무 많습니다. 자기가 힘든 문제를 말 못하잖아요. 왜냐하면 미국이나 캐나다 가면 다 잘 사는 줄 알고 이민에 대해 잘 모르고 가거든요”

우리나라의 교육 시스템이 대학을 선택하는 순간 다른 기회가 닫혀버린다는 맹점 때문에라도 나 대표는 영어교육의 중요성을 다시 한 번 강조했다. 영어를 못하면 10% 엘리트 계층에 들어갈 길이 거의 막혀있는 현 상황에서 ‘나눔교육’을 통해 저소득층 아이들을 지원해주고자 하는 것이다.

기업, 지자체 차원의 후원 있어야

교육에서 소외된 사람들에게 희망 줄 것

사교육 과정이라 학교 교육 과정으로 인정되지 않음에도 12월 현재 두 달 간의 결석을 감안하면서까지 아이들과 부모님들의 참여와 호응을 얻고 있는 ‘자연스피치 잉글리쉬 캠프’이지만 나 대표에게는 계속되는 고민이 있다. 충분한 비용을 지불할 수 있는 계층의 아이들부터 기초생활수급자 가정의 아이들까지 공평한 영어 교육을 실천하기 위해 ‘자연스피치’ 교육을 널리 알리고 싶다는 것이다. 캠프를 파주 영어마을에서 진행하게 된 것도 그 때문이다. 국내 영어교육의 산실이라 불리는 파주 영어마을에서 조금 더 좋은 입지조건과 교육조건을 통해 영어마을 활성화와 함께 조금 더 다양한 계층의 아이들을 품을 수 있을 것이라는 판단 때문이다. 그러나 이것이 끝이 아니다. 나 대표는 앞으로 ‘자연스피치 잉글리쉬 캠프’가 더 널리 알려지고 지자체나 기업 차원의 후원을 통해 이 캠프가 조금 더 대중화되어 “영어 때문에 고통 받는 학생들이 많아 도와주고, 저소득층 소외계층 사람들에게 희망을 주고 싶다”는 뜻을 표했다. Miracle method that enables you to listen and speak in two months

Exerting their effort for equal English education

We are living in a world of globalization. English keeps its status as the number one foreign language in the world and many Korean students are eager to get higher scores in TOEIC(Test of English for International Communication). The problem is that they cannot speak even when they have achieved a high score. The good news is that the NanumEdu's CEO Gyeongyeon Na introduced a miracle method that enables you to listen and speak in two months and she is the talk of the town. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Na and heard about the details.

The innovation in English learning method 'Listen first and speak'

2 Months Intensive Training Camp Programme

Na recently has had a Natural Speech English Camp entrance ceremony at Gyeonggi English Village in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. The camp selected 20 students including the students from low income families to run for 2 months closing at the end of December. The teaching method of Natural Speech English Camp is different from normal English language academies where vocabulary and grammar are taught at the initial stage but the camp is prioritizing listening, speaking and reading before grammar.

Na said "Korean people have a speaking habit without listening 100% of what others say. You get some problems if you do it even in native language but in English you are likely to make it worse. Our course is to change this habit through the environment provided for them to listen to native English speakers for the first two weeks then they speak afterwards."

The time table is from 9am to 1pm. Students have Free Talking with the teacher they chose according to their level and subjects after lunch. If anyone who speaks Korean in any circumstances during the camp gets expelled. This is because Na has seen many English camps fall into useless formality as the students can speak Korean freely during the camp.

Fulfilling the desire for Nanum Education(share) through English camp

Na happened to know Natural Speech English when she went to Canada to study English. She was working after majoring in counseling psychology in a graduate school in Korea before coming to Canada. The programme was a brainchild of the head of an academy Youngsam Son who had been teaching English for 10 years in Canada. After experiencing the programme for one month, Na found herself being able to speak naturally. Na then joined Son and they soon started advertising for students. Na eventually launched her business in Korea in 2012 with the method she acquired in Canada. The reason Na introduced the method to Koreans is because of her desires for Nanum Education(share). She believes that a good English education must also be provided for the children from low income families.

Na said "(Korean) students in Canada are all from rich families. We are trying to send as many disadvantaged students as we can to Canada but if we can popularize this programme domestically they can learn their speaking skill in Korea without going abroad. Many Koreans who have been living in Canada for 20 to 30 years don't seem to smile much when meeting each other. It is understandable that they didn't know how hard the life in a foreign land would be when they left Korea."

Na emphasized on the importance of English education considering the fact that English language is a must if one wants to belong to the 10% elite group and that is why Na wants to provide an opportunity for those disadvantaged children.

Enterprise & local government level support is needed

Giving hope to underprivileged through education

In fact, the camp is not recognized as national curriculum but many parents willingly take the risk of their children being absent from school for two month in order to participate in the camp. And Na is passionate to spread this innovative method to children regardless their background. This is one of the reasons Na launched the camp in Gyeonggi English Village in Paju which is thought to be the cradle of English education of Korea. As it is well located and provides better conditions, it can embrace children from various social classes. Na hopes that enterprises and local governments will support Natural Speech English Camp so that it can help the children who are suffering from learning English and also help the disadvantaged children. Power Korea thinks it is certain that Na and NanumEdu will lead the English education in Korea.
