진화하는 모바일 산업을 이끌어갈 창의적 인재 육성

바야흐로 스마트폰 인구 3500만의 시대. 예전에는 핸드폰이 단순히 전화나 메시지를 주고받는 용도로 제한되었으나 스마트폰의 출시 이후 핸드폰은 소통의 통로이자, 학업의 도구, 취미 활동의 창구가 되었다. 최근에 발표된 ‘스마트폰 이용형태 조사’에 따르면 1인당 일 평균 스마트폰 사용 횟수는 12.3회, 사용 시간은 94분이라고 보고되는데 10대와 20대의 수치는 이보다 훨씬 웃도는 실정이다. 모바일에 컴퓨터의 OS가 탑재되고 인터넷 통신 디바이스가 탑재되면서 손바닥만 한 기계하나가 책을 대신하고 신문을 대신하고 MP3, 카메라, 악기 등을 대체하게 되면서 그야말로 모바일 산업의 혁명이 일어난 것이다. 다양한 기술들의 융합으로 탄생된 스마트폰 세상은 또다시 다양한 엔터테인먼트 콘텐츠, 게임등과 융합하여 거대한 모바일 문화를 형성하게 되었는데, 세계적 규모의 모바일 시장을 선점하기 위해서는 그에 걸맞은 인재 양성이 우선시되어야 할 것이다. 경기과학기술대학 컴퓨터모바일융합과의 전선도 교수를 만나 자세한 이야기를 들어봤다. 

모바일 서비스의 핵심은 융합에 있다

경기과학기술대학교는 2011년 모바일 산업 현장에서 필요로 하는 인재 육성을 목표로 전문대 최초로 모바일정보융합과를 개설하였고, 진화하는 시장에 능동적으로 대처하기 위해 2014년 컴퓨터학과와 모바일정보융합과를 통합하여 컴퓨터모바일융합과를 개편하였다. 학과 개설의 지대한 공로를 세운 전선도 교수는 모바일 분야의 기술인력 육성에 초점을 맞추어 다양한 교육을 시고하고 있다. “모바일은 새로운 산업이죠. 스마트폰의 출시 이후 대부분의 사람들은 모바일 서비스를 받으며 삶의 형태의 변화를 맞이했고, 사회 전반의 문화 역시 급변하게 되었죠. 저는 대한민국이 그 변화에 편승되기 보다는 변화를 이끌어가게 하기 위해 양질의 교육을 받은 차세대 인재들의 육성이 시급하다고 보고 모바일정보융합과의 개설에 힘을 보태게 되었습니다”라고 전선도 교수는 융합학과 개설 동기를 말하고 있다    

전선도 교수는 모바일 서비스의 핵심은 융합에 있다고 설명한다. 융합이란 현 정부의 ‘창조경제’에서도 가장 중요한 핵심 키워드 중 하나다. 그것은 완전히 새로운 기술을 개발해 내는 것이 아니라, 기존에 비약적으로 발전된 기술들을 융합하여 인간의 삶을 더 이롭게 함과 동시에 국가 경제 발전에도 이바지하는 것이다. 이에 경기과학기술대학교의 컴퓨터모바일융합과에서는 이에 따라 다양한 콘텐츠가 융합 서비스 되고 있는 모바일 분야의 교육을 위해서는 설계를 위한 기반기술부터 심화기술까지 단계적인 교육을 토대로 모바일 전문가를 육성하고 있다. “융합은 이해의 과정이라고 생각합니다. 다른 분야의 대해 이해하고 그것을 내 전공에 접목시켜 새로운 패러다임을 창조해내는 것이죠. 더불어 융합적인 교육 자체가 학생들에게 창의적으로 업무를 수행할 수 있는 소양을 만들어 준다고 확신합니다.” 

실무 중심의 교육 수행

경기과학기술대학교의 전선도 교수는 스마트폰 개발업체 및 모바일 관련 산업체들과 연계하여 실제적으로 학생들이 모바일 콘텐츠 작품을 제작해 볼 수 있도록 실무형 교육시스템을 도입했다. 지난해에는 산학협력중심대학사업 우수대학으로 선정되도록 기여했으며, 최근에는 대학과 고교, 기업체가 함께하는 ‘선취업 후진학을 위한 산학협력’에도 적극 나서고 있다. “산학연계를 통해 캡스톤디자인프로그램(창의적 종합설계)으로 교육을 수행하기도 했습니다.  좀 더 자유로운 분위기 속에서 토론 중심의 수업이 될 수 있도록 노력하고 있는데, 작품 아이디어를 학생들 간의 회의와, 업체와의 회의를 통해 보다 구체화할 수 있어 더 많은 결과물들을 도출할 수 있게 되었습니다.” 

전선도 교수와 제자들은 앞서 음성인식용 앱(App)과 영여교육 앱, 모바일 제어 로봇 등의 작품을 완성해 이목을 집중시킨바 있으며, 지난해에는 스마트 M 테크쇼 전시회, 2013 한국전자전(Korea Electronic Exhibition·KES)의 스마트 컨버전스 전시회 등에 참가하여 학과의 이름을 드높였다. 현재는 모바일을 이용해 개도국에 농업 환경을 발전시킬 수 있는 기술을 서비스하기위해 매진하고 있으며, 향후 의료기기와 연동되는 모바일 서비스와 모바일 시스템을 통해 로봇을 제어하는 기술을 차례로 선보일 예정이다. 앞으로도 산업 흐름을 읽을 수 있는 눈과 발상의 전환을 주도하는 창의적 사고를 가진 역량 있는 인재를 양성하는데 주력하겠다고 밝힌 전선도 교수, 그에게 배움을 얻은 인재들이 글로벌 모바일 시장에서 대한민국의 위상을 높이고 나아가 창조경제에 이바지해주기를 기대해본다.

Fostering talents to lead advancing mobile industry

The smart-phone phenomenon is in full swing with its 35 million users. From calling and texting to various forms of communication, studying tools and hobbies, smart-phone has become a must-have today. According to a statistics one person uses it 12.3 times for 94 minutes in total in a day but the figure goes up when it comes to teen and 20s. Loaded with computer OS it takes the various roles as a book, newspaper, MP3, camera, and musical instrument and it can surely be called as a mobile revolution. It forms a mobile culture through a variety of contents and combined technologies. But if one wants to conquer the market, one has to foster relevant talent at the first stage. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met the professor JUNE, SUN-DO and heard about the details.

The key of mobile service is at convergence

Gyeonggi College of Science and Technology opened Combined Mobile Information Department for the first time in college level education in 2011 to promote the talent for the field, and subsequently reset it as Combined Computer Mobile Department in 2014 by blending it with Computer Department. June contributed hugely to opening the department and is currently providing various curriculums. June said "mobile is a new industry. Since its advent the course of our life has much changed. And I thought it's more important for Korea to lead the industry rather than to be led. That's why I opened the department to foster the relevant talents." June mentioned that the key of mobile service is at convergence which is also the key word of Park administration. It is not to create a new thing but to combine the existing technologies for a better life and national economy.

The department is promoting mobile specialists from designing foundation techniques to core techniques based on gradual training. June said "convergence is a process of understanding. It's to understand the other area and combine it with another areas to create a new paradigm. And I'm sure this combined training itself can make students refine their knowledge."  

Practical training

June introduced a practical training by cooperating with smart-phone or mobile related companies so that students can actually make their own mobile contents. June took a great part for the College to be chosen as an excellent college of industry-academic cooperation project and is currently active for 'Recruit first, Study later Cooperation' with high schools, colleges and companies. June said "I once carried out a capstone design programme(creative total plan) through industry-academic cooperation. I'm trying to make my class to be a discussion rather than a lecture and this can help us create more results through various meetings between students and companies."

June and his students have shocked the people by creating a voice recognition app, English education app, and robot controling app. Last year, they participated in Smart M Tech Show and Smart Convergence Exhibition of Korea Electronic Exhibition and raised up their college name. Currently they are working on technologies for developing agricultural environment in developing countries by using mobile and are planning to introduce robot controlling technology for medical purposes by combining mobile service and its system.

June's passion for fostering talents is endless and his student can surely contribute for the development of creative economy and raising Korea's global status.
