바이클릿(BYCLEAT)으로 클릿슈즈 없이도 즐거운 자전거 라이딩 한다

친숙한 생활운동기구 자전거는 애호가 천만 명 시대를 맞이하여 고가 특수자전거 호황 시대도 열었다. 밀리미터 단위의 컨트롤, 풀 옵션 장착 핸들과 브레이크로 인해 ‘차전거’라고 불리는 특수 자전거는 기본 하드웨어 장착 후에도 끊임없는 소모품 교체와 장비 업그레이드로 부담이 되기도 한다. 인체공학 요소와 합리적인 기능, 경비 절감을 생각한 아이디어 제품 바이클릿으로 편리하고 안전한 라이딩에 한 걸음 더 다가서 보자.

진정한 인체공학적 호환가능 클릿도우미 ‘바이클릿’

일반 도로용 자전거의 평페달과 달리, 특수 자전거에는 두 발을 고정하는 클릿페달이 부착되어 있다. 클릿페달은 발의 미끄러짐을 방지하여 추진력을 높여주고 안정적 주행을 도와준다. 그리고 전용 슈즈를 착용하여 고정력이 증가된다. 이렇게 불필요한 에너지 손실을 방지하는 클릿 페달 전용슈즈이지만, 본체의 헤드가 일정 각도 이상 기울면 페달에 고정된 발을 떼지 못하는 관계로 더 큰 사고를 유발할 수 있다. 더욱이 버킷을 달지 않는 기종이면 휴대하기 어려우며, 고가의 수입제품이 대부분인 전용슈즈를 일반 운동화처럼 신게 되면 수명이 줄어든다. 바이클릿은 이러한 단점을 개선하여, 등산용 아이젠처럼 일반 슈즈에 장착하면 개당 80g이 조금 넘는 가벼운 무게로 전용 슈즈 역할을 해 낸다. 바이클릿을 개발한 최진영 대표는 장거리 출퇴근을 하며 바이클릿의 아이디어를 떠올렸다고 한다. “한때 사업 실패로 인해 건강에 이상이 생겼고 장거리 출퇴근을 자전거 도로로 하며 체력을 관리하게 되었다. 예비역 해병대 소령 출신이라 장거리 주행에는 큰 문제가 없었다. 그런데 생각지도 않은 페달이 문제였다. 50km가 넘는 장거리는 일반 평페달로는 무리였고, 지인으로부터 받은 클릿페달을 사용하면서 휴대성이나 편의성 같은 부분에서 페달 보조기구의 필요성을 절감했다”고 전하는 최 대표는 건강을 관리하며 창업 아이디어를 준비했다. 최 대표는 서울산업진흥원(SBA)에서의 2012년도 재창업 프로그램인 ‘Re-born프로젝트’, 2014년 2월 중소기업진흥공단(SBC) '청년창업사관학교' 졸업을 거치며 금형 수정과 시장 연구 등을 병행하며 자전거 용품 전문업체로 창업의 가닥을 잡았다. “중요한 것은 기존 클릿페달을 교체하지 않아도 되는 점이며, 알루미늄, 서스(sus), 실리콘으로 되어 있어 마모가 적고 내구성이 강하며 벨크로로 고정하는 식이라 탈부착이 편하다. 클릿 사용구간(자전거 전용도로)에 도달하면 바이클릿을 신발 바닥면에 장착하기만 하면 된다. 대용장치 중앙 홀 부분에 클릿을 부착하여 기존의 클릿페달을 사용하며, 자전거 운행 중 돌발상황이 닥치면 옆으로 당겨서 분리할 수 있도록 제작했다” 최 대표는 출퇴근과 업무상 미팅 등에도 자전거를 이용하며 사용자의 요구를 반영하였다고 덧붙인다.

앞으로도 라이딩 고객의 요구에 맞춘 자전거 관련제품 출시 예정

지난 2월 26일 정식 벤처기업인증을 받은 트러스트리의 성과는 언론 매체를 통해서도 잘 알려져 있다. 연구와 시장조사, 제품 혁신에 중점을 둔데다 사용자의 필요를 위해 만들었기에, 최 대표는 KBS 1TV 대국민 창업오디션 프로그램인 ‘황금의 펜타곤 시즌2’ 3회 방송분에서 다른 5개 팀과 겨뤄 심사위원들의 격찬을 받으며 우승했다. 최 대표는 “처음 클릿페달 보조기구의 아이디어만 들고 사업계획서를 만들어 기술보증기금에서 대출하려다 거절당한 적도 있지만, 1인기업의 장점과 대표가 직접 멀티플레이어가 되어야 하는 점, 지속 가능하고 연계 개발이 많은 분야임을 어필하여 인정받았다”고 당시를 떠올린다. 그리고 세계 특허의 메카로 인정받는 스위스 ‘제네바국제발명품전시회’에서 2014년 4월 4일 바이클릿을 출품하여 금상을 수상하는 쾌거를 얻었다. 지난 2008년에는 도로교통사고 감정사 자격증을 취득해, 교통사고를 일으키는 여러 돌발 상황에 대한 지식을 쌓아온 최 대표는 차기 개발품으로 자전거용 브레이크 램프 등을 연구 중이다. 로드, 하이브리드, 미니벨로 등 로드바이크에서 호환 가능하고 다양한 욕구를 충족하는 장치들이 될 것이다. 그리고 성공적인 바이클릿에 이어, 보다 장기적인 안전한 라이딩을 위해 브레이크를 보완하여 2015년 경 출시할 예정이라고 한다. 최 대표가 바이클릿의 시제품을 제작할 때도 금형문제가 있음을 발견하고 수정을 거듭하며 최적상태를 찾아냈기에, 새로운 시도에서도 장기적인 기업브랜드를 생각하여 전문 제조업체로 자리매김하는 것을 목표로 달리고 있다. “스마트하고 확실한 기능 속에 오류 없는 디테일을 갖추어야 소비자를 공략할 수 있다. 소기업으로 출발했지만 서울산업진흥원(SBA)과 중소기업진흥공단(SBC)의 케어와 하드트레이닝으로 사업의 기반을 다진 것에 감사한다. 앞으로도 멀티 플레이어가 될 생각이다. 일에도 충실하고 건강도 지키는 삶, 바로 트러스트리가 추구하는 기업상이다. 나가면 바로 자전거 도로가 있는 곳에 사무실을 얻어 오전에는 자전거를 타면서 영감을 얻고, 오후에는 이를 바탕으로 자전거 용품을 개발하는 회사로 키우겠다.” 때로는 매니아가 전문가를 압도하는 시대, 앞으로도 고부가가치가 될 자전거 연관산업에서 매니아 아이템으로 승부수를 던진 트러스트리 최 대표의 혁신과 아이디어는 계속된다.

Cycling with BYCLEAT without cleated shoes

With over 10 million bicycle lovers in S. Korea, demand for special bicycles has also been increased. Unlike normal bicycles special ones have cleat pedals which hold the feet. They prevent the slips and help a thrust and safe driving. And the cleated shoes boost up fixation power. Although the shoes prevent unnecessary energy, when the head of the bicycle is tilted the feet get stuck on the bicycle which can cause an accident. Also if the bicycle does not have a bucket it is difficult to carry and if the shoes are used like normal sports shoes they do not last long even though most of them are imported and expensive. But BYCLEAT improved these drawbacks and they can be attached to normal shoes like climbing irons and each one weighs only 80 grams. Choi who invented BYCLEAT came up with the idea when he was commuting. He said "I once was seriously ill when my business went wrong and I used a bicycle for my commute. But soon I found a problem with the pedals. Normal pedals were impossible for a 50km journey so a friend of mine gave me cleat pedals but I still felt the need for convenience and compatability." Choi then started to plan to open a bicycle supplies store while he was taking a start-up programme 'Re-born Project' hosted by Seoul Business Agency(SBA) in 2012 and 'Youth Start-up Training School' from Small & Medium Business Cooperation(SBC). Choi said "I designed the product that doesn't need to change the cleat pedals and I made it by using aluminum, sus and silicon so that it has durability and prevents wear and tear. It is also detachable. People only need to attach the cleat to the bottom of their shoes when they reached at a bicycle lane and when an incident occurred they can take it off."

Customized new products to be released

Trustree obtained a venture enterprise certification on 26 February and Choi's achievements were applauded by the media for the market research, product innovation and user friendly design. Trustree won the grand prize at KBS 1TV national start-up programme 'Golden Pentagon Season 2' by defeating 5 teams. Choi said "I tried to get a supporting fund from Korea Technology Finance Corporation with my business plan but was rejected. But I won the grand prize eventually because they praised for my multi-playing role as one person enterprise and I appealed well that my field has sustainability and development potential." Choi also won a gold medal at Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions on 4 April 2014 which is the mecca of world patent. Meanwhile, he obtained a Traffic Accident Appraiser Licence in 2008 and is currently working on developing bicycle brake lamp. This device will enable compatibility with road, hybrid, and small wheel bicycles and meet the various demands. However, Choi's ultimate goal in the long term is to establish a manufacturing company as he has had many experiences in a mold. Choi said "details with smart function can attract customers. Though I started as a small business I could laid the foundation thanks to SBA and SBC's care and hard training. I'd like to keep my role as a multi-player. Hard work and healthy life are Trustree's motto. I want to build my office where there is a bicycle lane so that I can get some inspiration in the morning and developing new products in the afternoon." It is the age we are living in where a mania can surpass an expert and Power Korea thinks that Trustree's innovation and ideas are to be continued.
