G-CONNECT(ionized epoxy) wins 2014 Korea Excellent Patent Awards

Korea's first highway 'Gyeongbu Expressway' surprised the world by completing it in two and half years from 1 January 1968 to 7 July 1970. Compared to the similar construction in Japan at the time, the construction period was 1/4 and the cost was only half. However, more budget was spent for repair work after the completion which seemed quite natural considering the Korea's economic situation at that time. The problem is that this irrationality is still being practiced to reduce the initial construction cost or because of the deep rooted business connection. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met the CEO of Gstone Engineering Sangwoon Kwak and heard about the details.


G-CONNECT has  excellent adhesive property, buildability and eco-friendliness

Kwak established Gstone Engineering in 1997 and has been developing G-CONNECT(ionized epoxy) and repair & reinforcement system. G-CONNECT is an inorganic hybrid modified epoxy resin which contains Si-OH. Chemical welding occurs at the adhesive layer of old & new concrete when G-CONNECT is mixed with mortar which prevents leakage by solving cracks and defects. It also remodels the damaged parts caused by deterioration, physical impact and leakage. It has an excellent adhesive effect as it sticks very well to the water-contained surface and prevents leakage if the water is already percolated. Kwak said "there are not many fundamental repair methods which can solve the problems occurring during the construction. The existing carbon fiber and steel sheet reinforcement construction method expose the signs of repair which is not good in appearance and has the leakage problem. But G-CONNECT can solve all those problems at once."

Especially the 'ultra-thin layer method', which removes the only defected parts to minimum, can construct from 1mm. It has inner chemical capability and reflective function that can prevent accidents on the traffic lanes damaged by deicing agent.

G-CONNECT boasts its excellent adhesive property, buildability and eco-friendliness. As G-CONNECT is colorless, odorless and unpoisonous, it is excluded from VOCs regulations and is approved of its safety for using in enclosed space.


Harsh realities despite 100 applications for and 30 acquisitions of patents

G-CONNECT, with its high durability, reduced the maintenance & repair costs and the number of repair work. And it can subsequently reduce the government's budget and social expenses. Kwak said "the government spends billions of dollars for repair work. But if they use our technology, they can reduce the cost significantly." 

Gstone Engineering proved their technology by carrying out a repair work for a bridge's lower part of slab damaged by vehicle collision and its effect(adhesiveness) is still remaining excellent after 9 years. They were also recognized for their waterproof construction for the sunk-well of Worldcup Bridge by using G-CONNECT. Korean Institute of Industrial Technology, Pukyung National University, University of Seoul and the research institutes of major companies all approved G-CONNECT's durability, economical efficiency, eco-friendliness and policy-friendliness. Gstone Engineering has applied for 100 patents and obtained 30 patents. But they failed to sparkle their achievement as the competitors keep Gstone Engineering in check. They have worked with major companies for 7 years and carried out various constructions including coating work, developed reflection coating method and put it into practical use, but they could not receive their construction cost or their patents were infringed. Kwak said "the problem is that the employees of the head office give jobs to only specific companies while reducing the standard of repair work at the same time. It is time we changed this practice by establishing a new quality standard." As a result, Kwak is planning on selling related materials rather than constructing and also looking for foreign markets. Power Korea hopes that these wrong practices and interests between the parties will be improved so that our excellent technologies are not wasted.
