KOTRA, "export companies to do CSR for strengthening competitiveness"

KOTRA president Youngho Oh held 'Overseas CSR Commercialization Forum' on 14 last month at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The forum was held to analyze international society's CSR demands and to suggest reaction plans. The forum was participated by 300 people including the chief of KOTRA's Strategic Marketing Headquarter Byeongkwon Kim, the head of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources Chungwon Park, the vice chief of the Small and Medium Business Administration Sukyu Choi, the director of Business Institute for Sustainable Development Taejin Park, the managing director of Korean Standards Association Jaewon Oh, a Seoul National University professor Dongsung Jo, the director of Continuous Business Society Kichan Park, the chief director of The Institute for Industrial Policy Studies Yoonchul Lee, CSR specialists, and company officials. KOTRA treated contents of the report, published last week, the 'Multinational Corporation's Supply Chain Demands and Our Enterprises' Responding Plans' at the forum. An official of KOTRA said "the ethical standard of cooperative firms demanded by multinational corporations is no longer an option but a must. Korean companies need to reflect their social responsibilities into organizational culture." The chief commercial agent of Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea introduced the policy of EU Executive Committee which provides benefits to those who keep their social responsibilities when participating in EU Public Procurement, and emphasized that CSR is a must for Korean companies who want to trade with EU if they want to strengthen their competitiveness. The chief director of the Netherlands APG's Asian Corporate Governance Structure Yukyung Park explained the recent CSR investment trend such as UN's Social Responsibility Investment Principle. Park emphasized that APG's social responsibility investment is to help enterprises grow up sustainably, and requested the Korean companies' participation. The buyers from multinational corporations such as OTIS Elevator and Ikea had presentations about the corporative firms' CSR requirements. They advised that those who want to trade with multinational corporations must understand the CSR standard as it is even required for vendors who has trade connections. The manager of ILO's CSR introduced 'Better Work' programme which supports foreign companies to improve their working environment. The Korean companies who did CSR activities overseas were also introduced. Gawon Apparel and Taekwang Group shared their successful cases of trading with global companies by keeping CSR, and Hanvitdns and ETRI introduced their cases of participating in the KOTRA's global CSR projects to donate their products and services. KOTRA president Youngho Oh emphasized "overseas CSR activities should reflect the trading nation's social issues and it is more effective to promote shared values between the company and the local society such as ¡âpromoting local talents ¡âenvironment improvement ¡âconsumer protection ¡âcommunity development.

- Participant companies "plan to deploy the foreign employees who know the local very well - 


KOTRA and National Institute for International Education held '2014 Foreign Students Job Fair' on 1 October 2014 at COEX, Seoul. The fair, which is 5th this year, is held yearly in order to help export companies secure foreign talents. The fair was participated by 120 companies and 2,000 foreign students and provided various programmes such as ¡âenterprises-students one on one job interview ¡ârecruitment briefing ¡âvisa counseling ¡âCV consulting ¡âsimulated job interview ¡âphoto shoots for CV. The one on one job interview was participated by LG Electronics, Amore Pacific, Lette Group, E-mart, Fujixerox, and Daewoong Pharm and each company's booth was divided into ¡âthe whole fields ¡âIT.SW ¡âengineering ¡âdesk job ¡âforeign sales. The interview attracted more than 1,000 prearranged participants and more than 2,000 people, including 1,000 on-site registration, visited on the first day of the fair. An interviewer of LG said "we hired foreign students from the previous fairs and the result was that the atmosphere of the office became brighter and we also could be able to proceed the foreign projects efficiently. We plan to hire excellent foreign student this year as well." An official of C company said "we are looking for global talents for our entering the overseas markets. Those who know the local very well will be helpful for us to pioneer the foreign markets."

KOTRA president Youngho Oh said "Korea became the 7th member of 2050 Club($ 20,000 per capita income, 50 million population) but small and medium companies are still having difficulty to build competitiveness as securing manpower is not easy. Foreign students are not only those who are interested Korea but they can contribute to strengthening global competitiveness and to playing the bridge role between the countries."
