미술을 통해 대한민국의 발전과 화합을 이룬다 

춘당 민태홍 화백

오방색은 한국의 전통색상으로 황(黃), 청(靑), 백(白), 적(赤), 흑(黑)의 5가지 색을 말한다. 음양오행사상을 바탕에 두고 우리 민족과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있는 대표적인 대한민국의 색이다. 오방색을 이용해서 한민족의 얼과 기상을 표현하는 지두화(指頭畵)의 대가 민태홍 화백을 만나 그의 예술세계와 앞으로의 활동 계획을 알아보았다.

대한민국의 문화와 예술을 세계에 알리다

민 화백은 붓이 아닌 손가락 등을 이용해 그림을 그리는 지두화의 거장이다. 특히 민 화백은 못을 이용해 그림을 그리는데 이런 화풍을 가진 작가는 전 세계에서 민 화백이 유일무이하다. 자신만의 독특한 화풍을 견고히 구축한 민 화백은 우리나라의 미술을 세계에 알리는 활동에 큰 관심을 가졌다. 세계무대에서 우리나라의 미술이 저평가되어있다는 사실에 안타까움을 느꼈기 때문이다. 지난 1월 ‘유네스코한국위원회 문화예술 홍보대사’가 되어서 우리나라의 문화와 미술을 국제무대에 알리는데 주력을 하고 있다. 또한, 프랑스, 미국, 이탈리아, UN 등 여러 나라와 기구에서 단체전 및 개인전 등의 활발할 활동을 펼치며 명실공히 대한민국을 대표하는 서양화가로서 우뚝 섰다.

민 화백이 국내뿐 아니라 해외에서도 주목을 받는 이유는 무엇일까? 우선 그의 독특한 작업 기법이 희소성이 크기 때문일 것이다. 손가락 등을 이용한 지두화는 오래전부터 여러 화가가 존재했지만, 못을 이용하는 기법은 민 화백만이 유일하다. 그의 작품은 단단하고 날카로운 못의 특성이 투영되어 있다. 세밀하고 입체적인 질감이 살아나는 그림이 된다. 그리고 음양오행의 오방색을 이용하여 민 화백의 작품에는 우주의 기운과 대자연의 조화로움이 느껴진다. “인간과 우주는 다르지 않다”는 민 화백의 철학이 그대로 담겨있다. 작품에서 꿈틀대는 기운 생동하는 에너지는 서양화와 동양화의 경계를 허문다. 그의 작품이 곧 인간과 우주를 표현하는 것이다. 이런 민 화백만의 예술세계는 우주와 자연을 경외하는 인류의 보편적인 감성을 자극하며 세계무대에서 각광받을 수 있는 힘을 만든다.

대한민국의 화합을 위한 재능기부에 앞장

민 화백은 대한민국의 미술을 세계에 알리는 활동뿐 아니라 대한민국의 화합을 위해 노력을 하고 있다. 다문화 가정이 편견과 무시로 힘들어하는 것을 알고 그들에게 따뜻한 손길을 내밀고 있다. 지난 6월에 '다문화 가정 꿈나무 돕기' 특별초대전을 열었다. 서울 종로구 조계사 나무갤러리에서 30여 점의 작품을 선보였다. 그리고 9월 11일~15일 동안 ‘2014 인천 아시아경기대회 성공개최 기원과 다문화가정 돕기 특별초대전’을 인천광역시청 1층에서 열었다. 이번 수익금은 다문화가정을 위해 입장권을 구매, 인천 부평구다문화가족지원센터에 전달해 다문화가정이 2014 인천 아시아경기대회를 관람할 수 있도록 쓰인다. 유정복 인천시장, 필리핀 출신의 이자스민 국회의원 등이 참석하여 자리를 빛냈다. 특히 이번 초대전에는 민 화백의 제자인 황영수 작가와 함께하며, 사제간의 사회공헌활동으로 우리나라 예술인들의 귀감이 되었다. 민 화백은 “저의 활동으로 우리나라에서 소외되어 고통받는 사람들에게 작게나마 도움이 되고 용기가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.”라는 희망을 전했다.

제자와 함께 하는 아름다운 동행

민 화백은 자신의 작품으로 대한민국의 미술을 세계에 알리는 것에 그치지 않고 끊임없는 대한민국 미술의 발전을 위해 후학을 양성하는 것에도 노력을 다하고 있다. 그의 유일한 제자인 황영수 작가는 우리나라 단색회화의 대표 화가이며 지난 5월 대한민국 현대미술대전 비구상 부문 특선으로 주목을 받았다. 스승인 민 화백의 추천에 힘입어 11월과 12월 프랑스 파리에서 개인 초대전을 갖게 될 예정이다. 150년 전통을 자랑하고 프랑스 3대 미술제로 일컬어지는 그랑팔레에서 열리는 앙데팡당 미술제와 루브르 카루젤 미술제에 초대를 받은 것이다. 민 화백은 제자라 하여도 같은 길을 가는 동료 작가라는 생각을 가지고 앞으로도 동행할 계획이다. “이제는 혼자가 아닌 제자와 함께하며 대한민국의 문화와 예술을 세계에 알리고 소외된 이웃을 돌보는 일에 더욱 열의를 다하겠습니다.”라는 포부를 밝혔다.

Achieving the nation's development and unity through art.

Artist Taehong Min (pen name: Chundang)

Obang (five colors) are the traditional Korean colors which are yellow, blue, white, red and black. They are based on Yin-Yang and Five Elements Theory and are the representative colors of Korea which have intimate relations with the Korean race. Power Korea has met artist Taehong Min who expresses the spirits of Korean people through his finger paintings and heard about his art world and future projects.

Letting the world know about Korean culture and art.

Min is the master of finger painting. Min uses nails to create his works and there is no one who uses this style of painting in the world but only him. Min established his unique style and has passion in introducing Korean art to the world. He felt sorry that the Korean art are underrated in the world stage. Thus he became the honorary ambassador of Korean National Commission for UNESCO in culture and art last January to promote Korea and its culture and art to the world. He has opened solo and group exhibitions in France, US, Italy, and UN, and become a representative Korean artist both in name and reality.

What might be the reason that Min draws such attention from both Korea and overseas? It might be because of his unique style. There have been some artists who painted pictures by using their fingers but Min is the only one who uses nails. His works reflect the nail's solid and sharp characteristics. They are alive with detail and 3 dimensional texture. And we can feel the spirits of the universe and the harmony of the nature as he uses five colors of Yin and Yang and Five Elements. They contain Min's philosophy "humans and the universe are not different". The wiggly spirits and lively energies blur the line between western painting and oriental painting. His works but expresses humans and the universe. Min's art world prompts the universal sensibility of humans that admires the universe and the nature and makes the power of his works to be recognized in the world stage.

Taking a lead in talent donation for national unity.

Min not only tries hard to introduce the Korean art to the world but also to create unity for the nation. He has been giving a helping hand since he learned that the multi-cultural families have hard times due to people's disregard and prejudice. He opened a special invitational exhibition called 'Helping Young Hopefuls of Multi-cultural Families' last June at Namu Gallery of Jogye Temple, Jongro, Seoul and displayed his 30 works. He also opened a special invitational exhibition called 'Wishing a Successful 2014 Incheon Asian Games and Helping Multi-cultural Families' from 11 to 15 September at the Incheon city hall. The profits were sent to Bupyeong Multi-cultural Families Supporting Center so that they can buy some tickets of the Games for the families. The exhibition was participated by Jeongbok Yoo, the mayor of Incheon city, and Jasmine Lee, a Filipino Korean lawmaker. Especially, the exhibition was co-held by Youngsu Whang, a pupil of Min, and it became a model for many artists for their mutual social contribution activities. Min said "I hope my activities will be a small help and encouragement for the disadvantaged."

Min not only introduces the Korean art to the world through his works but he is also promoting his pupil for the development of the Korean art. His only pupil Youngsu Whang is a representative Korean artist who paints in one tint only and was spot lighted as she was specially selected in the nonfigurative art part at The Korea Modern Art Festival last May. With Min's help, she is expected to have solo invitation exhibitions in November and December in Paris, France. She was also invited to participate in Salon des Artistes Ind?pendants in Grand Palais, and The Carrousel du Louvre which boast 150 years of tradition and called as France's most famous 3 art festivals. Min is determined to walk along with Whang as a colleague artist but not as her teacher. Min said "I will do my best with Whang to introduce the Korean culture and art to the world and to take care of disadvantaged people."
