Making the 'warmth of tradition' inspired by nature and life

- Artist, Potter Lee Kyung Hee

Learned a style of a unique hand journey from Jeonju to Daejeon

Potter Lee Kyung Hee born in Go Chan, Jeollabukdo, has a broad spectrum of her work in celadon, white porcelain. and modern life pottery. She is primarily creating her works of piling up spades with the use of the hand wheel. She learned an Goryeo inlaid celadon of porcelain handmade way before the era of mass production and imports. She spent her the early 80's in the city of Jeonju famous for art, craft, and tradition, and came upon the various arts including quilt rare in those days, as well as pottery, dyeing, and woodwork. She learned the function in the industry exporting celadon to Japan in mid-1980s. "It was an era of export-level recognition of our ceramic. She made a variety of traditional household Items such as potted plants, orchid plants, water glass, jars, and ornaments. It was the place where Japan took our potters over to its country in old era, and there were many masters there. Ceramic technology is 100% handmade. She airlifted wood by truck from Jiri Mountain she placed the trees on the head, carried them on her back with the use of Korean A-frame backpack, and fired the kiln, supplying the firewood as she was passing them from hand to hand as if people carried the bricks from the rooftop neighborhood. She used the clay which she fetched from the mountain in person and she carried it by the handcart and then placed it in water. The past is still now vividly remembered in decades to the potter Lee, which was the anecdotes of his  bowl of rice wine when she was standing next to the fireman staying up all night to heating the fire, feeding the fire firewood kiln, and which was the heat in the air as hot as the hair is firing, when the oven door is open. When the vessels are not dry well, she directly fire the kiln, through which she dried them with the bottom heat, which, Bokro, was the most memorable to her. She learned celadon of Jeonju by the handmade way through which she applied the glaze and drew the decoration by the hand. Potter Lee Kyung Hee was born in Go Chang famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Dolmen) and all local conservation area, a UNESCO biosphere name, but she referred to Jeonju as her second home where she has built the basis of Art. "Ceramic artists study the picture in order to take the work profile. To film traditional culture and objects, she traveled to Jeonju Hanok Village in Gyodong, and she had many chances to see our traditional things in alleys of Hanok Village." On the basis of  the foundation that she learned, she is now settled in Daejeon where she is now creating traditional favorites with the sense of modern life. Lee feel pleasure to combine and mix the refined clay. As she learned how to process the clay directly taken by herself for a long time, she can assume where the clay come from through the light and texture of it when she see the clay. Among them, her favorite clay is the very unrefined clay, porcelain clay, Sancheong clay from Sancheonggun in Gyeongsangdo famous for it, and the red clay of Jeolla Gimje. When making a living porcelain, she uses spotted Jeombagi, Jaeyou, Cheongyu' by sowing the iron oxide in the glaze, and enjoy using the 'Sino Oil' loved by domestic and foreign ceramics experts, because its color changes depending on clay type. As she likes the natural objects, she draws the season sense into her work such as flowers and trees. In the case of his series <bottle 1>, she got the idea from squirrel's grasping the cone. The bottle curves embodies the cone, and the handle of the bottle does the squirrel. <An inlaid celadon bottle jar> was made by mixing the celadon clay and the white porcelain clay and it expresses willow tree and mandarin duck in two colors black and white inlaid. Potter Lee loves a fleshy plant and directly make flowerpots and use them. The living pots and flowerpots made from this were sometimes presented to the surrounding people. When seeing her works made by herself directly, and she is happy to see the handmade work, she feels proud as a potter.

Her courage to open the second act of her life, and life to donate a gift is beautiful

"The ceramic art is the working required a lot of people's hand compared to other areas. Taking to the ceramic art, you can't feel interest in other things." As potter Lee got married and had a family, she had left the pottery circle for 10 years from the March in 92 to January 21, 2002, when she started to go to ceramic studio which a ceramic expert was running. In the happiness of a family home, the emptiness has come to her, and she got the clay around the two-story house where she lives, and sat on the rooftop, made bowls and toys of children, and displayed them in the railing. She showed a strong attachment to it enough to remake them when they were falling down. Suffering from the ceramic art, she transferred to the university with his courage, getting an education at her old age. She was confident of her basic skills, but she also attended private school because she had to learn the computer 3D. Her young classmates helped her thoughtfully. "The working related to pottery has the strong solidarity, so all patience and cooperation, consideration is important. We worked together with the way in which students were in charge of the digital work and I came up with the ideas. Finally she was able to graduate with honors, as the motivation being consistently given to her with the way that mothers say hello her, "how is she doing with the school work." She is most grateful to them in being able to do with getting the attention of her fellows." In order to return the consideration received from them, the potter is sowing her zeal in social activities. Noeun 2 dong most populous in Daejeon is the place having the cultural activities most. Potter Lee works with the people donating talent with these major and aptitude, and taking the time during her working, and works as a person in charge of financial affairs in citizens community committee for the development of the town. Potter Lee always suggests ideas actively in harmony with the natural environment of the residents. The committee helps neighbors in difficult situation also supports the senior citizens' community center with the help of the indigenous groups. Potter Lee has been lecturing the theory and practical ceramics in the cultural centers and welfare centers from 2008 supported by the state and local governments, and she has been working for the life lessons and guidance to young people. She got the qualification at Chungnam National University Lifelong Education Center in 2010 and also serves as a lifelong learning coordinator. She is working to solve the thirst of the period of 10 years blank. With the thought of desperate heart of that time she is working to pursue widely sharing rather than the profit. "Service has the important meaning in life. We can start in the work from taking care of and cultivating the environment. In my case, in addition to beautification service it's possible for me to donate a pottery-related skills. So the surrounding people sharing intention even envy me." She supported the event on-site training at various events, showed enthusiasm in cultural and welfare talent contributions to low-income and multi-cultural families. she has been quietly preparing for pottery exhibition to be held in October in West Area Cultural Center in Daejeon. The work inspired by traditional earthenware pottery will be exhibited. Potter Lee sharing the talent by blending of art and everyday things has the wish. "For cultural powerhouse, as people practice 'the love of my town, the phase culture of an entire nation will raise. When she goes to Seoul with the family events, she comes back, seeing one or more the cultural events. The people who are housewives and work for the art love art very much even in the busy schedules. So I hope the local media have introduced a steady exhibition schedule." She has a little dream of exhibiting his works in the mean time and presenting them people around her and provide a seat like that when she throw a party for the age of eighty, with which she continues to open the third act of her life fruitfully, whose passion we cheer and support.
