The cradle of Korea's first Sports and Outdoors pedagogy.

"My goal is to establish outdoor culture and national licence'

- Park, Joanna Kyung-yie, Eulji University professor, Dept. of Sports and Outdoors.

The opening of the Sports and Outdoor Course for specialists.

Professor Park has been leading an outdoors life for 30 years and is the very person who planned 'Walking Along the Baekdudaegan Mountain Ridges', a climbing course which had a theme, when she was working as the vice president of Korea Alpine Federation. She is a veteran who accomplished ascents of Ama Dablam in 1991 which was the Korea's first female record of Winter Himalaya Climbing, Gasherbrum II(8036m) in 1997, Aconcagua in 2002 which is the highest mountain in South America, and Vinson Massif in South Pole in 2002. Generally, the success rate of ascent of Himalaya is only 10~20%, but Park was outstanding in rock climbing while attending university and was famous for successful ascent of Himalaya. In 2007, she started Alpine skiing (skiing was her long lasting hobby) and won the third place in the Asian Cup Alpine Skiing. She has been contributing to raise the recognition of Alpine skiing as an education board member of Korea Ski Mountaineering Association. In 2007, International Ski Mountaineering Federation trained 12 people from Korea, China and Japan, and chose 3 international referees, and Park was chosen as the only female referee of Asian Alpine skiing among three referees. Eulji University is known as specialized in health and they put great importance on the connection between health and physical activities. Accordingly, they opened the Dept. of Sports and Outdoors which is different from normal leisure sports departments. The reason Park was appointed the professor of the department was that she is able to teach her hands-on experience and knowledge as well as her abundant networking with other people in the field. She explained the reason of her customized programmes for climbing, MTB, rock climbing by saying "it is my purpose to popularize various outdoor sports and to cultivate specialists and teachers. A variety of professionalism is needed when it comes to practical technique, educational knowledge, first aid, life-saving, natural topography, ecology, and meteorology in the outdoor camp for youths. Because unexpected accidents are always lurking in any circumstances such as accidents in the water, hypothermia and isolation in the mountain. In addition, military style training and boot camp keep aloof from the people who want practical leisure activities."

Helpful information and programmes to get the popularity of the course.

As an Alpine skiing expert and educator, Park always emphasizes climber's right attitude 'by fair means' to her students. Park wants students to live in the spirit of fairness like sports players. Alpine skiing, which combined skiing with climbing, requires physical strength. Park said "the manias who seek bigger adventures and thrill go abroad to enjoy heliskiing. The degree of difficulty in Alpine skiing is higher than cross-country skiing which the total difference of elevation is 200 meters. Heliskiing is 1,600 ~ 1,900 meters with climbing up and down the 500 meter slope three times in the male tournament. Despite that hash conditions, it still is an attractive event as the players can get into the deeper nature. It can be enjoyed in Kangwon province, Ulleung island, and Halla Mountain in South Korea." Thanks to Park who arranged equipment rental system, the Dept. of Sports and Outdoors can enable the students to enter Alpine skiing by borrowing 50 equipments from Korea Ski Mountaineering Association. Park said "we had an episode last year when students, who wanted to be an outdoor costume designer, left the department with much confusion. So I planned an event that could clarify the department's identity. Supported by Korea Alpine Federation and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, we held '1st Eulji President's Cup National Trekking Competition', opened a seminar by inviting a world renowned Italian climber Franco Gionco. We are also cooperating with Mountaineering Institute which belonged to Korea Alpine Federation, Korean Mountaineering Supporting Center, and Mountain Rescue Team of Seoul Alpine Federation to focus on job training." The students will get a business management degree on finishing the course and will be working for related educational institutes, outdoor brands, professional research centers, camping and training centers, and Korea Forest Service, or as a trekking guide. Thanks to Park's various efforts and activities, the course is the talk of the town among students and their parents.

Aiming at making professional teaching materials and establishing national licence.

The course runs two major practical training per term such as swimming, rock climbing and rafting. Park said "we encourage the students to participate in Cross-country and Biathlon Referee Training. Because they will be active as the referees after gaining a certificate, the 40 fresh year students are expected to receive a certificate in the coming autumn." Park also shows a great interest in national university cooperation. Like the outdoor sports country France, Korea Ski Mountaineering Association and Korean Mountaineering School are planning to establish a National Skiing and Mountaineering School, and Park is active in both organizations as a board member and a lecturer. Park said "US and other advanced countries run a variety of outdoor camps during school vacations. They ask us to send camp counselors to US as they don't have enough there. But we have weak education system in the field so we need to develop professional outdoor pedagogy. And we will be making it based on mountain sports and water sports considering the Korea's geographical features unlike US where they can provide a variety of programmes such as climbing, fishing, kayak, rafting, mountain cycling, Alpine skiing. As Chadwick International provides outdoor lessons consisting of camping and outdoor sports in recreational forests, and the importance of elementary, middle and high school's physical education keeps rising, I hope my students will fill up the gap in the outdoor sports teaching field." According to a research on national leisure, people showed a strong interest in outdoor activities. Park emphasizes that settling down an effective outdoor sports among children and young people which can possibly solve youth problems while boosting up their physical strength and character, a professional outdoor education licence system is a must. Power Korea supports that Park's efforts will come to fruition.
