대부분의 문화권에서 모유 수유는 영양학적으로, 정서 교육적으로 우수하다는 점을 인정하고 있다. 맞벌이, 만혼, 스트레스 등의 요인으로 유선발달이 원활치 않은 현대 여성들도 통증과 고통을 이겨내며 완모(완전 모유수유)를 이루고자 애쓰고 있다. 오랜 간호 조산 경험으로 체득한 노하우로 모유수유의 알파에서 오메가까지 섭렵한 이금재 대표는 통증과 고통으로 힘겨운 산모들을 위한 해결책을 제시해 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.

실전에 강한 ‘행복한 모유수유’의 비결을 널리 알려

OK모유육아클럽은 예약제로 운영되고 있으며, 출산을 준비하는 전국의 임신부들과 산모들에게 입소문을 타며 많은 인기를 얻고 있다. 독특한 기술과 노하우로 산모들의 눈높이에 맞춘 서비스를 제공하고 있기 때문이다. 이금재 대표는 “출산 준비와 과정도 힘들지만, 산모들을 가장 힘들게 만드는 것은 젖몸살”이라고 한다. 모유수유만 고집하다가 산모는 통증에, 아기는 배고픔에 우는 것을 보며 안타까워하던 이 대표는 보다 궁극적인 대안을 고민하게 된다. “산모들은 체질도 체력도, 유방 상태도 다르다. 그러니 우리 실정에 맞는 마사지법을 도입해야겠다고 생각했다” 이후 일본 오케타니 모유육아 상담실에서 고통 없이 관리를 받는 산모들을 보고 오케타니식 관리법을 공부한 뒤, 강서구에 산후조리원을 개원하게 된다. 현재는 OK모유육아클럽에서 수유지도와 유방관리, 육아상담, 아기수영 프로그램을 통해 아기의 심신이 편해지고 행동 발달에 도움이 되는 자연주의 육아법을 실천하고 있다. 

지난 8월, 반디앤루니스 육아관련 베스트로 선정된 이 대표의 저서이자 연작 ‘(두근두근 콩닥콩닥)두콩시리즈’의 첫 작품, ‘가슴벅찬 모유수유’에는 지난 9년여 시간 동안 산모가 아기들과 교감하는 과정이 잔잔하게 그려져 있다. 이 대표는 실제 사례들을 통해 성공적인 수유 방법을 전한다. “한 변호사 엄마가 수유도 공부의 연장선으로 생각하며 꾸준히 노력한 끝에 완모에 성공한 것, 그리고 늦은 밤 응급 상황을 맞았을 때를 대비한 셀프마사지법으로 효과를 본 산모들의 사례들은 큰 힘이 된다. 산모들이 병원과 연계하여 산전에 많은 교육을 받고 오는 상황이지만, 그래도 좀 더 강조하고픈 것이 있다면 조선시대 왕실 유모들처럼 최대한 심신을 편하게 하며 순한 음식과 수분을 많이 섭취하라고 조언하고 싶다. 또한 아기가 빠는 것은 엄마에게서 유즙분비홀몬이 나오도록 하는 것인데, 완모에 집착해서 매일 유축기를 사용하여 모유를 젖병에 담아 주다보면 홀몬도, 아기와의 유대감 효과도 어려우니 유축기에 의지하지 않도록 한다. 우리는 가슴통증을 호소하는 산모들이 쾌통 느낌을 받도록 유방관리를 해주고 있다” 이 원장은 1대 1관리 외에도 지역별 출장 서비스를 진행하며 많은 공감을 얻고 있다. 제왕절개 수술 다음 날 혼자 택시를 타고 온 산모를 보고 걱정된 나머지 현실적인 도움을 주기 위해 출장 관리를 결정했다고 한다. 

비록 출산율이 줄어든다는 보도가 이어지지만, 그럼에도 수유에 대한 엄마들의 열정은 계속되고 있다. 그러한 열정이 힘에 부칠 때 이 원장은 통증을 줄이고, 모유를 잘 나게 독려하며 성공적인 수유를 끝내고 단유를 할 때까지 산모들과 함께 한다. “모유 수유만의 전문가가 아닌, 육아 전문가가 되는 것이 궁극적인 목표다. 이상적인 수유는 엄마가 아기를 편안하게 안고 교감하여 먹이는 것으로, 모든 수유는 언제나 ‘아기와 엄마가 함께’라고 보면 된다. 젖이 잘 안 나오고 아파서 당장은 힘들지만, 마음을 편히 갖자마자 수유가 가능해지고, 완모에 성공한 산모들을 많이 보았다. 분유를 먹는 순간 완모에 실패한다는 중압감을 버리고, 필요할 때는 분유를 먹이면서 아기의 공복을 해소하게 한 뒤 마사지와 휴식, 영양 공급을 병행하는 것이 즉효했다” 이렇게 현실에 도움에 되는 프로그램을 운영하던 이 원장은 지난 2012년, 상해, 북경, 심천 등 8개 지점을 가진 중국의 유명 연맹인 유에즈 시시 산후조리원 연맹을 방문한 것을 계기로 기술 고문이 되어 국제적 경험을 쌓았다. 이 원장은 동료들과 함께 2015년 2월, 중국에 독립된 클리닉을 설립하여 직원 교육 등 축적된 노하우를 꾸준히 전파할 예정이다. 또한 이 원장은 OK모유육아클럽의 커리큘럼을 바탕으로, 평생교육원의 학과로 신설하여 인정받도록 준비 중이다. 전문적인 인재를 양성하여 세상의 산모와 아기들에게 든든한 동반자가 되어 줄 이 원장의 꿈을 응원해 본다.

People in most cultures acknowledge that breast feeding is nutritionally, emotionally and educationally good. Modern women, who have not very active mammary line due to the environment such as a couple working together for a living, late marriage and stress, are trying hard to breast feed their babies despite the pangs and aches it gives. Kumjai Lee is a veteran in midwifery service and is being loved by many mothers who have benefited from her solutions on breast feeding.

Spreading the secrets of happy breast feeding

OK Breastfeeding Consultant Club operates a reservation system and is the talk of the town as they provide their unique technique and know-how tailored for the mothers. "Preparations for giving birth and their procedures are difficult things but even more so is suffering from mastitis" said Lee. By observing mothers sticking to breast feeding in pains and babies crying in hunger, Lee felt sorry and devised ultimate alternatives as a result. "Each mother has different physical constitution and status of breasts but they don't know about this. So I came up with a massage method that can satisfy the conditions" said Lee. She was impressed by Oketani Breast Feeding Counseling Center, Japan, which provided painless breast feeding, and she studied the very method, and opened the current postnatal care center in Gangseo district, Seoul. Currently OK Breastfeeding Consultant Club provides breast feeding instruction, breast management, infant counseling, and baby swimming programmes which can help a baby's development of mind and body as well as behavior. 

Lee's first book of a pit-a-pat series 'Heartful of Breast Feeding' was chosen in last August as the best book for infants by Bandinlunis (internet bookstore). The book serenely pictures the sympathetic relations between mothers and infants through her last 9 years of experience. Lee depicts the successful methods with real cases in her book. There introduced stories that a lawyer mother regards breast feeding as an extension of studying and finally succeeded in breast feeding, and the mothers who applied self-massage method in emergency in the middle of the night, and these stories give a great encouragement to the readers. Although many mothers obtain instructions from the hospitals before giving birth, Lee emphasizes that they should make themselves comfortable first and take a lot of mild food and water like the royal mothers of the Yi Dynasty did. A baby's sucking is to get lactogenic hormone but if a mother uses a breast pump everyday to make provisions, they cannot get the effect of hormone and a rapport between the mother and the baby. "We manage the mothers, who complain about the pangs and aches when breast feeding, to experience the 'pleasant' pangs and aches" said Lee. Lee also provides 1:1 management and travel clinics. She decided to do the travel clinic services when she saw a mother who just had a caesarean section came to her center by taxi and because of this she wanted to start practical services.

There are continuous reports on reducing birth rate in the media. Nevertheless, the mothers' passion in breast feeding is also never ending. And when the passion meets discouragement, Lee will always be there until the job is done. "My ultimate goal is not only to be a breast feeding specialist but also to be a infant specialist. The ideal breast feeding is done when a mother makes her baby comfortable and they sympathize with each other. I have seen many mothers who had difficulty at first but gradually made it through when they relax. If they fight against oppressive feeling when giving powdered milk to a baby but can use both method side by side, it will be much more effective" said Lee. In 2012, Lee visited the famous U AS CC Postpartum Clinic Federation which has 8 branches in Shanghai, Beijing, and Simchun, and gained international experience by becoming a technical adviser. Lee is planning to establish an independent clinic with her staff in China in 2015 to provide staff education and their accumulated know-how. She is also preparing to open a new department in continuing education institutes based on OK Breastfeeding Consultant Club's curriculum.
