전직 사이클 선수,
남한강 자전거 도로에 희망의 둥지를 틀다
유준식 일진사이클 대표
젊은 시절 사이클 선수로 활약하며 자전거와 인연을 맺은 유 대표는 현재 미사대교 아래 일진사이클을 운영하며 자전거 동호인들의 해결사로 활약하고 있다.
과거 사이클 선수로 수년간 활동한 뒤 25세엔 권투 선수로 잠시 진로를 바꿨던 그는 항상 자전거에 대한 갈증이 있었고 결국 다시 자전거 사업에 발을 들이게 된다.
올림픽 공원 근처에서 ‘일진 사이클’이라는 상호로 처음 자전거 사업을 시작했지만 현실은 그리 녹록치 않았다고 당시를 회상한다.
그렇게 다시 그는 자전거와 어쩔 수 없이 이별 했지만 가끔 찾았던 한강변의 자전거 도로에서 고장 난 자전거에 쩔쩔매던 사람들을 도와주며 다시금 자전거 사업을 시작해야겠다는 의지로 지금의 위치에 일진사이클을 열게 됐다.
과거 암사동까지만 만들어져있던 자전거 도로가 팔당까지 이어지면서 지금의 위치를 선택하게 됐다는 유준식 대표. 일진사이클은 현재 자전거 동호인들의 사랑방 역할을 하고 있다.
처음 사업을 시작할 때 돈보다는 자전거를 사랑하는 사람들을 돕겠다는 마음이었다. 사업을 시작하기 전부터도 그는 웬만한 수리는 무상으로 해주고, 부품이 필요한 수리 역시도 무상으로 해주거나 실비만 받고 진행해줬다.
점차 자전거를 무상수리 해주는 유 대표의 활동이 입소문을 타고 번지면서 그를 찾는 사람들이 기하급수적으로 늘게 됐다. 지금의 일진사이클이 생기게 된 배경이라고 그는 전한다.
현재 한국친환경장애인협회 부회장을 맡고 있는 그는 자신의 철학이자 신조인 남을 위한 삶을 살자는 생각으로 재능기부에 열정적인 삶을 이어가고 있다.
과거 선수용 사이클의 프레임을 직접 개발, 제작하는 기업을 운영했던 그는 1991년 서울시 사회체육주최 벨로드롬 2,000m 경기에서 자신이 만든 자전거로 1위를 차지했으며, 1992년에는 50km 도로경기 역시 자신이 만든 자전거로 우승하기도 했다. 또한, 서울 예선전에서는 3명의 선수가 유 대표의 자전거를 사용해 우승자를 배출하기도 했다.
이렇듯 자전거와 평생을 함께 했다고 해도 과언이 아닌 그의 삶을 한마디로 집약하면 만능 자전거 아저씨다.
다리 밑에 노점상을 차리고 쫒기기를 한 달에 수 십번. 그럼에도 그는 무상 수리를 포기하지 않고 자신을 필요로 하는 동호인들을 위해 일했다. 그리고 작년 66세의 나이로 자신의 가게인 일진사이클을 오픈하게 됐고, 하나님의 깊은 뜻으로 67세의 나이에 재기에 성공하게 됐다. 또, 명일동에 위치한 명성교회의 김삼환 목사님의 설교를 들으며 자신의 성공과 재기에 대한 하나님의 뜻에 감사하는 마음을 전하고 있기도 하다.
자신을 있게 한 자전거를 통해 봉사를 시작하고 싶다는 생각에 협회의 부회장직에도 열정적이며, 자전거 동호인들의 어려움을 해결하기 위한 노력에도 쉼이 없다.
또한, 자전거 수리를 배우고 싶은 사람들에게 무료로 기술을 가르쳐 주고, 폐자전거를 수거해 말끔히 고친 뒤 전철역과 버스정류장에 비치해 시민들이 이용할 수 있도록 하기도 했다.
얼마 전에는 남양주시 남부희망케어센터에 자전거 20대를 기탁하며, 뜻 있는 나눔을 실천하기도 했다.
그의 활동은 여기서 그치지 않는다. 일진사이클을 운영하면서 생긴 수익금은 월드비전과 유니세프 등을 통해 기부하며, 국내를 넘어서 세계 곳곳의 어려운 사람들을 돕는데 사용되기를 바라고 있다. 이렇듯 자신의 삶을 봉사에 맞춰 살고 있는 유준식 대표. 팔당으로 이어지는 자전거 도로가 활성 될수록 그의 삶에서 나눔은 더욱 크게 확대될 것이다.
모든 것을 함께 나누고 싶다는 그는 자전거의 활성화와 함께 나눔이 활성화 될 수 있도록 자신의 역할에 최선을 다할 것이라는 뜻을 전했다.

Yoo was a former professional cyclist and is currently running Iljin Cycle under the Misa Bridge to help cyclists as a troubleshooter. After his long professional career as a cyclist he once became a boxer when he was 25 but with an unquenchable thirst for cycling he came back to cycling business. However, when he started Iljin Cycle near the Olympic Park which he had a lot of difficult time running the shop, he had to say good bye to bicycles again.
Then an occasion arose while he was walking along the Han Riverside that he found someone frustrated with his broken bicycle and he naturally helped him and this prompted him to open Iljin Cycle again on the current position. Yoo said that he chose this spot because the bicycle road is now extended to Paldang (originally to Amsa), and the shop is functioning as a reception room among the cyclists. When he first started the business he intended to help those who love bicycles. Even before he started the business he fixed broken bicycles for people as free of charge and provided parts at the cost price or nothing. Then his good deed spread mouth to mouth and he gained a lot of customers eventually. Yoo said that this is the background of establishing Iljin Cycle. He is currently the vice president of Korea Eco-friendly Association of Persons with Disabilities and with his philosophy 'live for others', he carries on his life with passion in talent donation. He once run an enterprise which developed and manufactured bicycle frames for professional cyclists, and he won the first place with the bicycle he made himself at the velodrome 2,000m racing held by Seoul Social Athletics in 1991, as well as 50km highway racing in 1992. Also, three cyclists used the bicycles Yoo made at the elimination round in Seoul which resulted in one of them to be the winner. So his whole life in a nutshell can be called as the 'uncle bicycle."
Because bicycles made him who he is, he is passionate in social contribution activities by using bicycles as the vice president of the association and as a troubleshooter for the cyclists. He gives free lessons to people who want to learn bicycle repair, and he also fixed disused bicycles to put at the subway stations or bus stops so that the citizens can use them. He donated 20 bicycles to Nambu Hope Care Center in Namyangju city a short time ago. In addition, he donates his profits from Iljin Cycle through World Vision and Unicef and hopes it will be used for disadvantaged people in the world. Yoo's life is full of service and the more the bicycle road is active the bigger the share of his life will be.
Yoo said that he wants to do his best in his role to promote the use of bicycles and to share everything he has.
