동북아 거점 교육중심의 글로벌 명문대학으로의 도약 선언

1948년 장로회신학교로 시작하여 올해 66주년을 맞는 안양대학교. 지난 6월 제7대 총장으로 취임한 김석준 총장은 “새로운 도전과 불굴의 프론티어 정신을 갖춘 미래창조교육의 주역으로서, 사랑과 섬김의 봉사정신이 어우러진 글로벌 명문사학의 새로운 역사를 만드는 것이 목표”라며 “21세기를 주도하는 창의융합형 미래형 인재양성을 통해서 국내 교육중심 명문대학에서 동북아 거점 교육중심의 글로벌대학으로 도약 발전을 시킬 것”을 표명하면서 안양대학교의 새로운 청사진을 제시했다.
창조경제의‘산학연 협동 프론티어의 모델’로 만들겠다
특히 “이 시대가 요구하고 또 국민들이 원하는 바람직한 대학교육의 방향을 제시할 수 있는 ‘대학교육개혁의 아이콘’이자 ‘대학교육개혁의 상징’이 되는 모델로서 안양대학교를 발전시키겠다”고 강조했다. 지식정보화사회에서 산업의 중심지인 대학, 특히 교육중심의 안양대학교를 창조경제의 ‘산학연 협동 프론티어의 모델’로 만들겠다는 말로 인터뷰를 시작했다. 김 총장은 이어 “기본적으로 대학교육은 인재양성이다. 우리나라의 건국, 산업화 그리고 민주화의 주역이 바로 인재에서 비롯된다. 대학교육이 이 시대의 국가발전과 국민행복의 원동력이자 주체가 될 수 있도록 그 역할을 담당해야 한다. 그리고 국민과 학부모의 눈높이, 학생의 요구에 맞게 그들이 만족하고, 그들이 행복한 안양대학교를 만들겠다. 또한 섬김과 나눔, 헌신과 봉사의 정신이 깃든 선한 인성의 바탕위에 전문지식을 추가하는 교육 모델로서 낮은 곳에서 섬기는 선한 인재’라는 봉사하는 리더(Servant Leader)를 국내외 사회에 당당하게 배출하겠다”고 강조했다.
기독교 정신과 한구석밝히기 정신
‘사랑과 섬김의 기독교 정신’과 ‘한구석밝히기 정신’을 교육이념으로 하는 안양대학교에 취임한 김 총장은 “한구석밝히기 정신은 언제 어디에서 무엇을 하든 최선을 다하여 자신이 성취할 수 있는 최고의 결실을 지향하는 정신” 이라며 “기독교의 빛과 소금의 정신과 맞닿아 있다.”라고 말한다. ‘한구석밝히기 정신’을 바탕으로 창조적 사고와 도전정신 그리고 통섭적 지성을 갖춘 글로벌 리더를 양성하는 것이 김 총장의 목표이다.
취임 후 김 총장이 가장 먼저 시작한 일은 한국대학교육협의회 한국대학평가원의 ‘대학기관평가인증’을 획득하는 일이었다. 이번 평가에서 △대학사명 및 발전계획 △교육 △대학 구성원 △교육시설 △대학 재정 및 경영 △사회봉사 등 6개 영역 17개 부문에 걸쳐 모든 영역에서 패스(PASS)판정을 받았다. 안양대학교는 이번 인증을 통해 대학교육 질에 대한 보증과 신뢰를 받게 되었으며, 정부로부터 각종 행?재정 지원과 관련한 객관적 정보 확보 및 활용, 그리고 자기점검 및 자율평가 체계 구축 등 대학교육의 인증을 통한 학교 발전이 더욱 가속화 할 수 있길 기대하고 있다. 김 총장은 “이번 대학기관평가인증을 위해 동창회, 교수, 직원, 학생 그리고 학부모들이 결집, 한마음 한뜻으로 노력하여 좋은 결과를 만들었다”며 “이것이야 말로 진정한 안양대학교의 힘”이라고 말한다.
김 총장은 또한 많은 대학들이 학생들의 등록금을 건물을 짓는데 사용하지만 등록금은 양질의 교육을 통해 학생들에게 다시 되돌려 주는 것에 사용해야 한다고 말한다. 그렇기 때문에 ‘안양 새중앙교회’와 MOU를 맺고 목회자를 위한 교회의 시설을 학교의 기숙사로 활용하게 되었으며, 대학기관평가인증의 심사위원들은 이번 사례에 대한 감탄과 더불어 대학운영의 새로운 본보기로서 전국대학에 제시하겠다고 했다.
미래형 인재, 봉사하는 리더(Servant Leader) 양성
‘인성리더십코스’는 안양대학교만의 경쟁력 있는 인성교육프로그램이다. 21세기가 요구하는 인성과 리더십, 창의력과 의사소통능력, 사회성과 전문성을 체계적으로 함양할 수 있도록 지속적으로 지도하고 지원하는 이 과정은 김 총장이 취임하면서 ‘낮은 곳에서 섬기는 선한 인재’의 봉사하는 리더(Servant Leader)를 지향하며 더욱 도약할 전망이다. 올해로 12주년을 맞은 ‘인성리더십코스’는 학생들의 자율성과 적극성을 높여주는 다양한 체험학습을 기반으로 이론과 체험을 병행하고 있다. 수강신청과 동시에 마감될 정도로 학생들의 호응 또한 뜨겁다. 인성리더십I(기초과정), 인성리더십II(심화과정), 세계문화탐방, Global Leadership Discovery 로 크게 4가지 과정으로 구성되어 있으며, 이 과정을 통해 주도적인 삶의 태도를 함양하고 명확한 인생목표를 설정하며, 작은 실천을 통해 자기변화와 관계변화를 체험하는 시간을 갖는다. UC 버클리, 스탠퍼드대, 글로벌 코퍼레이션스 앤 글로벌, NGO 등에서 글로벌 리더십을 위한 현장학습의 기회도 주어진다. 이를 통해 세계 문화의 다양성에 대해 이해하고 글로벌 리더로서의 자질과 덕목을 갖추게 된다. 또한 매년 10개 내외의 팀을 선발하여 아시아, 유럽, 미국, 남미 등지에서 세계문화탐방 활동을 하게 된다. ‘인성리더십코스’에 대해 김 총장은 “최고의 스펙은 창의 인성이고, 인성이 곧 경쟁력이다. 인성교육에 국가미래가 달려있다.”라고 말하며 미래사회가 요구하는 봉사하는 리더의 인성을 강조했다.
세계적인 경쟁력을 갖춘 글로벌대학
사랑과 섬김의 봉사정신이 어우러진 글로벌 명문사학으로 나아가기 위해 안양대학교는 4대 목표를 설정하였다. 창조교육대학, 스마트경영대학, 특성화대학, 글로컬대학(Glocal)이 그것이다. 이를 통해 미래형 창의인재를 양성하고 최상의 교육서비스를 제공하여 학생행복 중심의 캠퍼스를 만들어갈 계획이다. 창조교육대학은 융합과 통섭에 따른 창의교육 및 교육혁신으로 질적인 도약을 이루며 산업현장과 연계한 수요자 중심의 맞춤형 교육은 물론 지식 나눔에 따른 Open Courseware 교육 등 선진화 교육을 지향한다. 이를 위해 우수한 교수진 확보와 첨단 교육시설의 확충으로 연구와 교육의 수준을 향상시켜 우수한 학생을 유치할 계획이다. 스마트경영대학은 동기촉진형의 지속성장하는 수요자 중심의 혁신경영과 슬림(slim)한 선진화 행정시스템을 도입 및 구축하여 교수 연구 환경과 학생의 학업여건 및 직원의 복지환경을 개선하는 한편 타 기관과의 제휴시스템을 통해 경영 효율을 극대화 한다.
특성화 대학은 선택과 집중으로 경쟁력과 생존력 강화를 목표로 하여 학교 고유의 대내외 기반을 응용 융합하여 뉴 패러다임의 차별화와 특성화를 이루어 집중 육성한다. 2012년 세계 최초의 화장품발명디자인학과를 만들었고 국내외 권위 있는 미술대전에서 다수의 학생 작품이 수상하는 쾌거를 이뤘으며, 2015년부터는 학교 주최의 세계적인 국제공모전도 계획 중이다. 특성화 대학 전략을 통해 안양대학교는 2011년 환경부 지정 기후변화특성화대학원 지원 사업에 선정되었고 2012년~2013년 한국환경공단의 ‘저탄소 그린캠퍼스’에 2회 연속 선정되었다. 그리고 지난 6월에는 국토교통부의 ‘공간정보 융복합 특성화대학원’에도 선정되는 쾌거를 이뤄냈으며 최대부상 미래산업이라 할 수 있는 기후변화와 빅데이터, 공간정보와 미래학 및 지역문화관광 등 다양한 분야의 융복합 특성화를 계획하고 있다.
마지막 목표인 글로컬(Glocal) 대학은 Global과 Local의 합성어로 지역거점을 넘어 강화캠퍼스를 활용하여 중국과 교류를 확대하고 동북아지역의 교육 수요 확대에 부응해 세계화와 국제화를 추진할 계획이다. 또한 해외교류 확대를 위해 다양한 교육연계 프로그램을 기획 및 실행을 하고 있다. 타 대학과 기관을 물리치고 국가 R&D 국토교통기술연구개발 ‘국토공간정보연구사업’의 연구수행기관으로 안양대학교가 선정되어 향후 4년간 정부에서 163억 원, 기업에서 55억 원, 총 218억 원을 지원받게 됐다. 도시정보공학과 신동빈 교수를 연구단장으로 한 이번 사업 연구단은 공간정보 기반의 다양한 사업을 수행한 경험이 풍부하며 관련 기술 및 역량을 보유하고 있는 최고 전문가 팀으로서 학교 발전의 큰 중추역할을 하고 있다. 최근 독일 뷔르츠부르크 국립 음악대학(Wuerzburg Musikhochschule)과 우호증진과 상호협력을 위한 ‘연구 및 학술 상호교류협력 협약’을 체결했다. 이번 양교간의 협약을 체결을 통해 연구 및 학술 교류 협력이 확대되면서 안양대학교의 글로벌 인재양성에 더욱 박차가 가해질 전망이다.
김 총장은 “안양대학교의 꿈과 희망이 반드시 실현되리라고 믿는다.”라며 “우리에게는 열성적인 교수, 우수한 학생, 헌신적인 직원, 모교를 사랑하는 동창 등 모든 구성원의 꿈이 함께 하고 있으며, 특히 하나님께서 늘 함께 하시기 때문이다.”라고 안양대학교의 밝은 미래를 확신했다.

Sukjoon Kim, the president of Anyang University
Starting as a presbytery seminary in 1948, Anyang University celebrated its 66th birthday this year. The president of Anyang University, Sukjoon Kim, took up an appointment last June as the 7th president and presented a blue print by saying that "we are leaders of future creative education, equipped with the challenging spirit and the indomitable frontier spirit, and it is my goal to make a new history of prestigious global university where the spirit of love and serve are harmonized. I will turn Anyang University into an education-centered global university in Northeast Asia from an education-centered prestigious university in Korea through promoting creation-blended and future-oriented talented people which will lead 21st century."
Anyang university to be an 'industry-academic cooperation frontier model' of creative economy.
"Responding to the needs of the times and suggesting the direction of desirable higher education that people want, I will develop Anyang University as a model for 'the symbol and the icon of innovative higher education'" emphasized Kim. Kim started the interview by saying that universities are the center of industry in the information and technology centric society and he will make the education-centered Anyang University as an 'industry-academic cooperation frontier model' of creative economy.
Kim accentuated that "Higher education basically is promoting talented people. The driving force of founding of Korea, industrialization, and democratization started from talented people. Higher education has to play the role to be the principal agent and driving force for development of the nation and national happiness. I will make Anyang University which people and school parents feel happy and satisfied according to their eye level and demands. Also, I will produce Servant Leaders for the world under the banner of 'virtuous talented people who serve at low' as an educational model based on virtuous personality and expertise that are infused with the spirit of serve & share, and service."
Christian spirit and Brightening One Corner.
Anyang University's educational philosophy is 'Christian sprit of love and serve' and 'Brightening One Corner'. Kim said "Brightening One Corner is the spirit to have one's best results, meaning that no matter what one does at where and when, one should do his best to achieve what he/she wants. It is connected with the spirit of light and salt of Christianity." Kim's goal is to promote global leaders who are equipped with creative thoughts, challenging spirit, and combined intelligence based on 'Brightening One Corner'.
The first thing Kim did after his inauguration was acquiring an accreditation from Korean University Accreditation Institute of Korean Council for University Education. They received PASS on all conditions in 6 areas and 17 parts including △ The Mission of University & Development Plan △ Education △ Members of University △ Educational Facilities △ Finance & Administration △ Social Service. Through this accreditation, Anyang University gained guarantee and trust on quality of university education. They are expecting that the development of the university will speed up by securing and making use of objective information of the government's administrative and financial support, and by building up a system of self-monitoring and self assessment. Kim said "the alumni, professors, staff, students and parents all cooperated with one another for the accreditation and that's why we achieved the good result. This is the real power of Anyang University."
Kim said that many universities use their tuition fees to build new buildings but it should be used for a high quality education of students. This is the reason that Anyang University signed a MOU with Anyang New Central Church so that the students can use the facilities of the church for their dormitory and the examiners of Korean University Accreditation Institute were impressed by this and said that they will suggest this case to the universities in Korea as a model for new university management.
Producing future-oriented talented people and Servant Leaders
'Humanism Leadership Course is the only Anyang University's competitive humanism education programme. The course guides and supports students to systematically foster humanism and leadership, creativity and communication ability, sociality and professionalism that are required by 21st century. The course pursues 'virtuous talented people who serve at low' of Servant Leaders which was presented by Kim in his inauguration, and is expected to leap high into the air. The course has been running for 12 years and is running with both theory and experience based on a variety of field studies that boost up students' autonomy and initiative. The course is really popular as the places get run out as soon as students start to register for the course. It is consisted of 4 parts in broad terms which are 'Humanism Leadership(foundation course)', 'Humanism Leadership(intensive course)', 'Exploration of World Culture', and 'Global Leadership Discovery'. Students foster proactive attitude of life, establish a clear goal of life, and have time to experience self-change and change of relationship through small actions. Students also can have a field trip opportunity at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Global Cooperations & Global, and NGO for global leadership. They are to understand about the diversity of world culture and to be equipped with global leader's quality and virtue through this programmes. In addition, 10 of both internal and external teams will be chosen to carry out the Exploration of World Culture in Asia, Europe, USA and South America. When asked about Humanism Leadership Course, Kim said "the best spec is creative humanism and humanism is the competitiveness. The future of a nation depends on humanism education." He also emphasized on service-minded leaders' humanism that is required by future society.
The global university equipped with global competitiveness.
Anyang University set up four goals to be a prestigious global university. 'Creative education university', 'smart management university', 'specialized university' and 'glocal university'. Anyang University will promote creative people, and provide best education service, and make students happy through these goals. 'Creative education university' tries to achieve qualitative leap through creative education and educational renovation according to blending and convergence, and to pursue customized education, that is linked with the industry, as well as advanced education according to Open Courseware education (knowledge share). For this, they are planning to invite excellent students by hiring excellent professors and expanding cutting edge education facilities to improve the level of research and education. 'Smart management university' invites and builds up a motivation-accelerated and consumer-centered innovative management, and slim advanced management system that are continuously growing. It improves professors' research environments and students' learning & welfare environments, and maximizes management effectiveness through partnership system with other organizations. 'Specialized university' aims to reinforce competitiveness and viability through selection and concentration, and applies and combines the university's internal and external foundation to achieve differentiation and characterization of new paradigm. The university opened Cosmetics Development Design Department in 2012 for the first time in the world, and several students have won prizes with their creative works in various authoritative domestic and world art competitions. And from 2015, the university will be holding an international competition. Thanks to their strategy to being a specialized university, they were selected for 'climate change specialized university support project' by the Ministry of Environment in 2011, and also selected for 'low carbon campus' in 2012 and 2013. In addition, they were selected for 'spatial information convergence specialized graduate school' by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in June this year. Their last goal 'Glocal' is a compound word of 'global' and 'local'. They will expand interchange with China by using their Kanghwa campus, and is planning to carry out globalization and internationalization in response to the increased demand of education in Northeast Asia. They are also planning and doing a variety of education connection programmes in order to expand international exchanges.
Recently, Anyang University has been selected to carry out 'national land spatial information research project' from National R&D Land and Transportation Technology Research & Development and will received 21.8 billion won($20m) from both government(16.3 billion won) and enterprises(5.5 million won) for the next 4 years. The research group of the project will be led by Dongbin Shin, the professor of Urban Information Engineering Department, and they are the best in the field who have many experience of carrying out various projects in spatial information and its related skills and capabilities. They are playing a pivotal role for development of the university. Recently, Anyang University has signed 'Research & Scholarship Exchange Agreement' with a German music university 'Wuerzburg Musikhochschule' in order to promote friendship and mutual cooperation. It is expected that Anyang University will speed up to promote globally talented people through this agreement.
Kim showed his confidence about the bright future of Anyang University by saying "I strongly believe that the dreams and hope of Anyang University will be realized. Because we have passionate professors, excellent students, devoted staff, supportive alumni who share our dreams together and God will always be with us."
