"I will always be with the neighbours in the world who need benefits"

'The female leader and heroine' who gives her artistic talent back to society.

- Soonok Lee, artist/poet/ and the chairwoman of Korea Arts & Culture Corps.

For normal people, art is hobby. But for artists, it is their second soul and a means of living. The lives of artists are but relatively lonely and fierce, and hence the families and people who supported artists were called as mecenat. In modern times, artists are doing activities which they give the love they received to society. For this reason, Soonok Lee, who is acknowledged for her literary and artistic talent, did not hesitate for a minute to practice her love for humanity.

Lee is an artist and a leader at the same time and Power Korea has met her and listened about her three hopes and ambitions.

Leading those who want to contribute their talent to the right direction.

The establishment of Korea Arts & Culture Corps was sequential like Lee's artistic attraction. Lee also showed her talent in poetry, music, which is her favorite hobby, and started her career as an essayist at 22. She started with half figurative art and is now acknowledged for her non figurative art works. Regarding the reason of her natural transfer to the territory of art, Lee said in retrospect "a literary girl who loved the nature grew up, became a poet, held numerous poetry & art exhibitions. I took up a brush to express the sentiment of the blue sea of my home town by matching between poetry and painting." Lee researched and archived the 50 year history of Suwon Literary Men's Association, and left a historical achievement by publishing it in March 2012. She also held a symposium for the first time in 50 years in Suwon in order to make Suwon Literary Men's House. Lee's boldness and strong energy from her small body is like the wave that is crossing big hills. She then sympathized with artists' difficulty and established Korea Arts & Culture Corps on 27 June 2013, and is acting as a mediator who ties up every little helps. When asked about the trigger for the establishment of the organization, Lee said "while I was doing art, I received a lot of benefits. I completed a PhD course, had may overseas exhibitions, and did a lot of travel and training to find some inspiration. And I thought I should do something for the artists who didn't have as much benefits as I had. There is a limit when only one person tries to help. That's why I invited experts, artists and normal people of all walks of life to lead the organization." It is run by the hearts of their 200 members, but Lee pursues realistic help and service rather than just financial help or meeting people to chat with. That is why Lee also invited medical personnels and lawyers as their members.

Lifting up the will to help others from artist groups.

Lee draws a line between art world and herself as a social leader and said "I will contribute to the development of Korea and its art world to become like UK or France. They have great artists and use their national collection to boost up tourism. And as an artist, I want to give everything for my works like the author Kyeongri Park did. She sublimated her works to art in which her life and works are combined together." Lee has been helping disabled, welfare recipients and elderly people who live alone without the world knowing. But she started to expose her good deed from last year at the risk of her activities being misunderstood as displaying her performance. Like the recent 'ice bucket challenge' fever, if it is led by a leader who has a good intention, people's free will can blaze up in unselfish group action. Organizations and social meetings are needed in order to establish efficient systems. "Even among artists, some are well provided and some have to worry about their living expenses not to mention their own studio and materials. That's why I want to create an atmosphere in which artists give hope and help each other." Like each poem makes a book at the end of the day, many individual members of the organization shared Lee's good intention. Everybody can join the organization. Artists support each other and help unfortunate neighbors. And Lee's good intention to help others attracted more and more people to support her systematic leadership.

Pursuing a life as a female leader who is fond of improving rights and interests of artists.

If we meet Lee, we can feel her humbleness even though she is acknowledged for her talent in poetry, essays, and oriental and western paintings. However, she possessed decisiveness that she puts a common saying 'one's literary talent is not the barometer of eloquence' to shame. "In fact, my natural talent is at eloquence handed down from generation to generation in my aristocratic family" said Lee. She is erecting a tower to achieve her bigger dreams through lecturing and artistic activities. Lee said "recently, I opened 'Suwon Literary Men's House', supported by Suwon city, for the first time in 5o years. It was my long cherished ambition. And I also want to build a gallery which I can exhibit my works in Heongseong, Gangwon province. One day, I want to donate my works to be shared by people nationwide so that I can complete my life as an artist." Lee emphasized on the importance of artist welfare law in order for Korea to move forward to be a culture advanced country. Lee said "artists are classified as freelancer or unemployed even though it is their job. We need the government's support as well as related laws for their stability. I put my intention in a bigger stage to get supports from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and local governments." Lee is becoming born-again as a female leader who dreams of promoting art and culture. Like her art world that expresses beautiful nature with fantasy and abstraction, Lee is painting humanism on canvas with her service and devotion as if they are brush and paint. She will put her talent in the leadership frame, and with the various colours, she will create a beautiful world. Power Korean is looking forward to seeing it.
