The first international conference in the history of Korea Customs Brokers Association

IFCBA 2014 Seoul World Conference

<IFCBA (International Federation Customs Brokers Association) 2014 Seoul World Conference> was successfully held under the auspices of Korea Customs Brokers Association from last May 13 through 17 (for five days) at Walker-Hill Hotel in Seoul.

At this event first-ever in 38 years after initiation of KCBA (Korea Customs Brokers Association), participated WCO (World Customs Organization), about 150 representatives from 15 countries including the US, China, Japan, Canada, etc. and 150 domestic customs house brokers, about 300 persons all told. This conference prepared to strengthen international solidarity of customs brokers in the world and present the plan for developing the customs brokers system carried on in the largest scale in history serving to enhance the status of Korea and Korean customers brokers¡¯ internationally. The success of holding this conference has been attributed to the passion and efforts of Pi Jae-gi, chairman of the organizing committee and vice president of KCBA.

300 customs brokers from around the world visited Seoul.

<IFCBA World Conference> is held touring different parts of the world and was attracted to Korea for the first time in Asia but China. After KCBA declared its intention of attraction at 2010 Argentine conference, 2011 council in Thai approved the holding unanimously and 2012 Athenian conference in Greece confirmed the Seoul conference for 2014. Then, KCBA started the arrangement committee in 2012 and elected its vice president Pi Jae-gi for chairman. In the mean time, the arrangement committee composed all particulars needed for conference, event schedule and discussions by session and established plans to invite as many countries and customers brokers as possible. The first mission given to Chairman Pi jae-gi was to lure a larger number of representatives to participate. For this purpose, he attended all meetings of IFCBA to encourage each country¡¯s representatives to participate and visited Japan and China, which share a mutually large scale of trades and necessity for exchange of information, two times for each assuring the convenience of interpretation, etc. in a positive induction of the neighboring country¡¯s participation. Especially, China being in the structure of operating its own associations for customs brokers independently for each region and obtaining approval respectively, Chairman Pi Jae-gi personally attended China¡¯s Customers Brokers Association¡¯s regular general meeting in March, 2014, putting in many efforts to explain the significance of holding the conference and necessity for participation. As the result, Japan and China sent out their delegation of over 30 persons each contributing to a successful conference while China¡¯s customs brokers association proposed a regular exchange with Korea¡¯s showing their warm interest and response.

Chairman Pi Jae-gi had a second mission of securing the budget for the event. At first, a hundred million won was estimated for the event but as the size of delegations increased, he had to meet additional expenses. Chairman Pi said, ¡°After a lengthy persuasion, members who even failed to catch on why they had to participate in such an event started to stand by. Then, I put my heart and soul, always on the go, into asking related institutions and enterprises for support. Especially, Silla duty-free shop in expectation of overseas promotion and CUPIA, which considered it a good promotional opportunity for their Uni-Pass, gave me lots of assistance.¡±

Enhances the status of Korean customs brokers with thorough preparations

Chairman Pi¡¯s third mission was to make an elaborate preparation for everything from selecting the topics for presentation to programs so that the conference might not be finished perfunctorily. So Korea Customers Brokers Association, through the review of IFCBA Arrangement Committee, selected a total of seven topics, including ¡®The proper nature of Korean customs brokers system,¡¯ ¡®Plan for institutional activity for promoting the role of customs brokers,¡¯ etc. and started to prepare their presentations and contents of discussion carefully. ¡°The most care we took was of simultaneous interpretation. It is usually carried on with English alone but we decided to provide simultaneous interpretation for Chinese and Japanese, too, which resulted in the positive participation of more customs brokers in the event.¡± To entertain VIPs who were to visit Korea, he paid much attention to the field trip program, which included Seoul city tour, DMZ tour, and visit to the training institute of the Tariff Border Administration, to introduce Korea substantially to delegations of each country. Especially, many participants said they became aware of Korea, the one and only divided country in the world, properly through DMZ tour and it was encouraging to the heart of customs brokers who had prepared the event with a great deal of trouble. ¡°Another thing we had to care about was meals. We decided to serve them buffet because there were people who set limits to their kinds of food for religious reasons and vegetarians.¡± It was a problem that, when visiting the Border Administration¡¯s training institute, there was no restaurant nearby. We had no choice but to use the cafeteria by asking the training institute. However, the response was rather good because customs brokers of each country said it was nice to have the trainees¡¯ experience serving the food in person holding the plate.

Effects of the successful conference will lead to mid-and long-term results.

IFCBA and WCO persons and member states that participated in this conference eulogized the perfect preparations for the event and evaluated that all programs were at high levels including session topics and speakers, selection of discussants, tour, assignment of time, etc. Especially, they pointed to the construction of international network for enhancing the use of FTA, shedding light on the role of customs brokers in the global age through discussing pending problems, etc. for helpful experience. ¡°At each time of presentations, 130 to 140 customs brokers attended to go into heated discussions. It was a rare scene unlike the past conference in other countries and people¡¯s fervor at discussion was such that the moderator almost had to control their remarks.¡± This event made an opportunity to enhance the prestige of Korean customs brokers in the reputation of one-step higher level of the conference. It also served to compose a human network of our and other countries¡¯ customs brokers and make mutual harmony and solidarity inside the associations of customs brokers. Especially, while the conference was going on, customs corporations did a campaign of publicity on delegations of each country by installing booths, which chairman Pi expects is going to bring on a wonderful effect. Myanmar is already asking for economic cooperation in the field of customs and clearance while other developing countries of Angola and Nigeria showed particular interest in Uni-Pass, our country¡¯s high-tech clearance system. In this way, his saying that the effect of successful conference would lead to mid-and long-term results of performance is coming true. ¡°The most touching scene was that IFCBA offered a moment of silence for Sewol Ferry victims on their own even though our party didn¡¯t ask them to. As it was a weight on our mind to carry on an international event when Sewol Ferry mishap had not been wound up yet, this proposal was the most welcome thing.¡± IFCBA also donated for the victims of Sewol Ferry. Chairman Pi Jae-gi, who finalized the first international event in the history of Korea Customs Brokers Association, is expected to seek for the harmony of customs brokers with indomitable will and promote Korea¡¯s trade capabilities to the world in the future.

Create values with brilliant ideas

Lim Suh-hwan, president of Suhsuh Entertainment

Development of ¡®Suhsuh Cam,¡¯ which takes a picture by automatically chasing after a moving object, is making a big issue in the advertising industry. Photographing the same scene several times from diverse angles involves so much time and expenses but using Suhsuh cam enables you to save them because it follows about the subject to take pictures. We met president of Lim Suh-hwan of Suhsuh Entertainment, who are drawing attention from both image and IT industries by development of Suhsuh cam. Suhsuh Entertainment is a company that makes images. It is reaping a big success in photographing images such as promotional image of Nexon-Game Tota II, planning and manufacture of music video, CF manufacture for franchise and food companies. Besides, President Lim is aiming to be a company in convergence of image and technology. Introducing the company, ¡°Unlike other companies that simply take pictures, we have our own IT technology,¡± President Lim described his and the company¡¯s ambition, ¡°Based on technology, we want to create more satisfaction than expected by the client.¡± The existing special camera is not easily accessed in terms of expenses. So president Lim minimized the expenses by intuitive design enabling independent movie makers as well as the existing image and advertising companies to use Suhsuh cam without burden. President Lim has been good at inventions since his school days. He won a prize at invention contest over 120 times with his own international patents, too. He was selected three times for invention man of merit and received an award for Korea¡¯s talent with a gymnast Son Yeon-jae in 2011. Also possessed of driving force, President Lim who felt a need for promotion after using a famous foreign App contacted the company and explained the necessity for promotion finally receiving the order of manufacturing its commercial film.

The reporter asked his knowhow on the process of startup and developing technologies. President Lim said that his ability alone would have failed him from startup to business success. He was able to move toward his dream for the presence of his parents who had been laying eyes with confidence, while he got a big help with inventions from Prof. Lee Joo-hyung and Prof. Hong Seong-mo. Besides, in the stage of startup planning, he managed with director general Park Hyun-il, an ex-producer of KBS, and started with five other members, currently cruising toward the same goal with 15 personnel in all. It is said that he was able to realize his dream by meeting President Lim Hyo-jin of Human Tree and director general Lee Chang-jae, who gave lots of advice. He said he is deeply indebted to these people. President Lim said, ¡°I am not successful yet but it is hard to make business successful by thinking alone. We will have a good result if starting a business with one¡¯s own idea and keeping at it.¡± Regarding the attitude at work, he added, ¡®We are aiming to have our personnel leave the job with gratitude to the company.¡±
