Professor Suh Seung-woo, in charge of the scoliosis clinic at the Kuro hospital of Korea University, seeks fundamental treatment for scoliosis, and concentrates on social activities aimed at treating neuromuscular scoliosis patients.

You can keep right posture only when you keep the vertebra straight by balancing muscles on both sides of your back. Seen from the front, the normal vertebra is straight. Seen from the sides, its cervical and lumbar vertebrae are bent forward, and thoracic and sacral vertebrae are bent backward.

Scoliosis refers to a vertebra bent sideways when seen from the front. Serious scoliosis, however, is a three-dimensional deformity which has a shape bent and twisted as well.

Recently, concerns are rising about this scoliosis. The deformity occurs to the vertebra without a symptom, which makes it difficult to notice the seriousness,  though its dangers have been warned of. Especially, in the case of idiopathic scoliosis, it is hard to obtain information about its treatment, as 90% of its cause can not be identified. What is worse, wrong information about the disease often aggravated the case.

A well noted doctor for scoliosis, prof. Suh said that we must concentrate on publicizing information about and treatment method for scoliosis, as the number of adolescent scolios patients is steadily on the rise.

When Suh, who was once a pediatric orthopedics specialist, started to research vertebral disease, he couldn't get enough information about it, and the awareness about the disease was so low that not many patients even felt the need to get it treated.

But he anticipated a rise in the case, and became a well-noted doctor for vertebra-related diseases, after working hard on treating and preventing them. So far, most of his attention has been placed upon neuromuscular scoliosis. Its treatment was one of his long-desired projects, as it brings about more serious results than idiopathic scoliosis.

Besides, it became his mission as a doctor to treat mentally deficient people with scoliosis, who are highly likely to develop neuromuscular scoliosis, as they are medically underprivileged. When muscle malfunctions due to cranial nerve disorder, such as cerebral palsy or brain lesions, the balance of muscles in the waist can not be achieved, and then, neuromuscular scoliosis will develop. Usually, mentally deficient people with the disease can not receive timely treatment, simply because they can not afford it, or live in protective facilities.

For children who missed the timing of treatment, their torsos may get distorted, and in more serious cases, their cardiopulmonary function worsens to threaten their life, as the vertebra presses the lung and abdomen.

Prof. Suh said that now, 70% of children housed in facilities for the disabled suffer from scoliosis, and 15% of them need treatment desperately, whose ribs and pelvic bones touch each other, and cardiopulmonary function declines.

As only specialist doctors can operate on these patients, many of them can not receive treatment due to their high costs. So, in order to solve this problem, he chose to establish foundations. He set up a treatment system for the disabled by establishing Korea Scoliosis Foundation with his wife Cheon Eun-mi, a doctor at the Mokdong hospital of Ewha Woman's University. Since its opening, it has been encouraging many other organizations to support the treatment costs. He said he started the charity work to help those living in medical blind spots.

Five years ago, along with LIG insurance, he also started to initiate a "Vertebral Health Keeper" campaign, providing correct knowledge about vertebral disease and meaningful medical services for it.

In 1998 when he visited Northwestern Medical College in the US., he saw there treatment systems for cerebral palsy and mental retardation patients, and decided to practice the same system back in Korea. After returning to Korea, in 1999, he bought a medical examining vehicle and X-ray scanners at his own expenses, to offer free medical services at public health centers in Seoul and Gyung-gi areas. It has already been 20 years since he started his free service, and this way, he has treated a considerable number of adolescent patients.

He revealed he will continue the free service in the future, adding he will launch free overseas treatment service too for the disabled and poor children in developing countries.

He noted that to this end, he needs support from various organizations which still remember the time when we were helped from overseas.

[Classifications of Scoliosis by Stage and Treatment Method]

Bent by under 20 degrees:  to do a stretching for scoliosis

Bent by 20~40 degrees: to wear treatment aids

Bent by over 40~50 degrees: operation recommended

   [Self-Examination Method for Scoliosis]

In case of scoliosis, you may see your both shoulders unleveled, breasts in different sizes, when standing upright and looking at them with your eyes. Your vertebra may look bent, when seen from the back.

You may suspect you develop scoliosis, when muscles on both sides of the vertebra are unleveled with your back bent forward some 90 degrees in upright posture.

In addition, you also have to suspect it, when the wrinkles on your waist don't have symmetry. When in doubt during the self-examination, you need to consult specialist doctors.
