<Cover Story : Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute CEO Gyeonghee Moon>

With absolute trusts from school parents, Moon is called as an 'English Specialist'

Awarded 'Innovative English Education Specialized Company' from 2014 Korea People Awards

Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute, CEO Gyeonghee Moon

Many Koreans show their hostility when it comes to the current climate of English education in Korea. This is due to the fact that English speaking ability has been a privilege through Korea's modern history and companies and universities require English skills excessively. Consequently, the side effects of such demands are getting worse and the Korean society is complaining of 'extreme tiredness'. Many school parents share the same sentiments. The problem, however, is whether there is an alternative. The dependence of the Korean economy on foreign markets are getting higher day by day and good jobs are crowded in large companies which feed on exports. Naturally, English speaking ability is required. It is clear that reducing private English education is appropriate. However, it is irrational to ask school parents to just cut it down without giving them any appropriate measures. In this case, more urgent need is not to just curse the current crazy climate of English education but to bring up examples which can save people from the 'tiredness and fear' and spread them. Moon suggests that to give a natural motivation against exam-centered English education is the top priority and people have to take English in friendly terms in order to achieve true English skills. Power Korea has met Moon, the CEO of Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute, and heard about her educational philosophy.

Levelwise curriculum that connects 6 areas organically

Basically a foreign language is a tool for communication. However, it is a subject to study in Korea and the problem starts from here. It brings tensions and pressure to students and school parents and thus the efficiency also drops. Moon paid attention to this point. She emphasized that "for those children who settled the problem down are clearly established with motivation and its concept and they are able to have fun on studying English as well as improve their skills more efficiently. Nobody can match for those who enjoy." The current curriculum of English education in Korea are divided into each test and focused solely on improving grammar, school records, TOEFL and TEPS. In other words, the social costs are being wasted on that test-only English education. Many students study at various private institutes to get higher marks but it is inefficient and the learning effect falls in terms of times and costs they wasted. Also, learning a language is not about memorizing only vocabulary or grammar or such but it needs a total guidance in all four areas of listening, writing, speaking and reading. Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute developed a programme which can manage and guide 6 areas effectively in general and it is run throughout the curriculum. The programme is consisted of elementary school, middle school and high school with 6 areas of listening ¡æ speaking ¡æ reading ¡æ grammar ¡æ writing ¡æ vocabulary so that students can improve their skills organically in all 6 areas. Elementary students are guided through an internationally certified English test TOSEL (Test of the Skills in the English Language) to learn the basics before moving onto TOEFL. Middle school students are guided through the four areas of TOEFL with grammar and structure of TEPS, as well as classes for their school records. High school students are focused on CSAT (the College Scholastic Ability Test), school records, and grammar. They are also provided with private and team lessons for special admission which students should make a result in a short time. "It is important to give motivation of study for elementary students continuously to arouse interests and we are helping them to experience English in a fun and exciting environment" said Moon.

Moon suggests a paradigm of whole-person English education based on creativity and personality

"There is a common denominator in all forms of education. It is to prepare fully to the brim without losing the essence of scholarship. English education is forming sympathy with students and school parents and sharing what I know."

Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute is receiving absolute trusts from school parents in Daechi-dong, Gangman, Seoul and it is called as 'English specialist'. And with these trusts, nation's top students are coming to study here. Consequently, their teaching methods and lectures are considered as the best in Korea. They provide a levelwise small group class with 3-7 students in it as well as a customized 1:1 class. They are enhancing learning effect by evoking interests in English with close supervision and functioning as a devoted mentor to tip off about their career path and methods for ever changing entrance examination. It is like attaching wings to them to get the best results possible in admission process.

Awarded from 2014 Korea People Awards for her hard work

Moon is teaching as the professor in charge of the TIOETs (Training Institution of English Teachers) course at Graduate School of Education, Yonsei University and as the professor responsible for the TOATs at Institute for Future Learning, Yonsei University. Moon said "I study about how we can speak English naturally, fluently, precisely and sophisticatedly. And I apply what I found to the field to make English elites. I also try to find a way to teach English more effectively for children."

Moon was recognized for her hard work and awarded 'Innovative English Education Specialized Company' from 2014 Korea People Awards last July at the National Assembly Constitutional Memorial Hall. Moon is preparing to open a library and a publishing company under the name of EDUHEART (Edu + Heart), meaning 'teaching children with love and treating the core parts of education' in order to unleash effective methods of learning English and her valuable teaching experiences. "I will make Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute a place where students, school parents and I can enjoy studying in satisfaction with both the process and the results of our English education. Based on passion, creativity and personality, I would like to suggest a paradigm of whole-person education" said Moon.

I could read in her eyes that Moon Gyeonghee Language Institute will certainly make a leap forward as a Korea's global institute.
