The world¡¯s top-class artwork containing simplicity and lyricism

Will be devoted to publicizing the excellence of Sancheong pot

Kim Jang-myeong, president of Sancheong White-clay Pottery Institute

The pot known as glazed or unglazed pottery is a kind of adhesive culture inseparable from our ancestors¡¯ life. Interestingly, there is a pot with artistry among its diverse kinds though born in adhesion to life. Its representative is Sancheong pot whose artistic value is gradually increasing even though there are few historical data and it is not known as yet who made it. In the past there was misunderstanding as inferior goods because of its unique manufacturing process or the look of glaze put on, but now Sancheong pot has settled as culture after President Kim Jang- myeong researched on it and promoted its excellence,. It was 15 years ago that President Kim Jang- myeong started to research on Sancheong pot. When he happened to come across Sancheong pot while traveling Suncheon, he was delighted and moved more than from celadon and white porcelain he had been collecting and has continued to collect and research on it since. Despite the few proper data when he set about research of the pot, he has engaged in diverse researches for 15 years to find the depth of Sancheong pot considering it his duty to grasp and deliver the right history of it. Through his research so far, he set the classification system of the pot as 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation and found that only the 1st-generation pot manufactured in the 18th century has a value as artwork and that those manufactured after that had been simply used for containers. He also learned about the potter¡¯s will to make artwork from the very time of manufacture by finding that the 1st-generation pot was the earthenware made by baking twice and over in a kiln, unlike the container made by baking just once. It is also the fact known through his research that shaping using pure white clay and applying glaze in exclusive use for a single pot proves that Sancheong pot was not inferior goods but an artwork planned from the beginning.

That¡¯s why Sancheong pot has different shape and pattern for each with all different meanings for each pattern. To make a pot existing singly in the world, potters in the 18th century completed the Sancheong pots now remaining struggling with the steaming hot kiln. After that, the Sancheong potters spread the technology across the country and the discovery of earthenware similar to Sancheong pot suggests the influence of the potters then. The quantity collected so far by President Kim Jang- myeong has reached a total of 300 pieces. This comprises 150 pieces of 1st-generation work, of which 100 pieces deserve to be artwork, and the rest of 2nd and 3rd generation pots. These 100 pots of the 1st generation president Kim makes high of as art are such a rarity that it couldn¡¯t be obtained again in the nation. These pots of artwork bear simplicity, lyricism, deep colors and patterns and contain philosophy of close relation to our history in their form of applying glaze, said President Kim. In the meantime, President Kim emphasizes the importance of studying upon the form of applying glaze when appreciating a pot. Since these pots were made in the method of molding a shape with white clay, applying wax to make the pattern in the potter¡¯s wish to express and then applying glaze, the form of applying glaze suggests starting the work premeditating the shape of expression when the potter set about making the pot. This implies, President Kim said, the potter didn¡¯t simply make pots for the use as a container but intentionally sublimated them to artwork in connection to our own history.

He was born in Cholla-do and never got out of it but recently he took interest in Sancheong pots manufactured in Gyeongsang-do. It is simply because he wants to promote our own things to the world, keep our own excellent culture from shutting up and reevaluate Sancheong pots. The same cause has urged him to hold a solo exhibition at Moodeung gallery from August 14, 2014. It is neither for sales nor for profits. The exhibition is simply intended to have people know our own thing properly, research together and establish it into the only culture of the world. He is planning to give added fuel to the research of the neglected Sancheong pots and build a large exhibition hall to display the natural beauty of the pots.

With mission to turn up and promote Korea¡¯s excellent culture above regional borders, President Kim Jang- myeong is deeply fascinated with Sancheong pots publicizing Korea to the world.
