갓난아기 한복부터 수의까지 한 땀 한 땀 손수 제작

몇 년 전부터 반짝 명절 특수를 겨냥해 중국에서 생산된 초저가 한복이 대량 유통되었다. 그런가하면 올 설에는 꽃, 페이즐리 패턴 등으로 유명한 영국 리버티 원단으로 제작된 한복이 고가에도 불구하고 선풍적인 인기를 끌었다. 이를 바라보는 시선은 두 가지다. 한복의 다양한 가능성을 보여주며 세계화의 한 방법을 제시했다는 것과, 국적 불명의 한복으로 오히려 한복의 정체성만 모호해졌다는 것. 하지만 20년 동안 오롯이 한복 만드는 일에 매진해 온 베베듀<www.bebedew.co.kr>의 전희경 대표에게는 우리의 전통 한복이 퓨전 한복과 단순 비교될 수 있다는 것 자체가 슬픈 현실로 다가온다.
특별한 날, 더욱 빛나는 우리 아기를 위한 베베듀
새로운 한복을 디자인할 때면 100m달리기를 앞둔 아이처럼 심장이 두근거린다고 말하는 전희경 대표는 전통 한복에 매료되어 20년간 외길을 걸어왔다. 어려서부터 그림에 남다른 소질이 있었던 그녀는 어머니의 혼수품이었던 미싱을 눈여겨보다가 열한살 때 인형에 옷을 만들어 입히곤 했다. “한양대 의류학과에 입학한 후 한복 작업실로 찾아가 보수 없이 일을 도와드리겠다고 부탁했죠. 학업과 일을 병행하고 늦은 시간까지 일하면서 눈물을 흘린적도 많았지만 한복의 기초부터 차근차근 일을 배울 수 있었던 좋은 기회였다고 생각해요.”
대학시절 이미 양장과 한복 국가기술자격증을 모두 취득한 그녀는 이후 유명 한복샵의 수석 디자이너로 근무를 하였다. 그러다 8년 전 자신만의 디자인 세계를 펼치기 위해 독립을 선언하여 베베듀를 오픈하게 되었고 그동안 꾸준하게 성장하여 지금은 판교에서 아뜰리에를 운영하고 있다. “프랑스 연수시절 아기 의상에 관심이 많아 아기 이슬을 뜻하는 ‘베베듀’라는 브랜드를 선보이게 되었죠. 이후 입소문을 타기 시작하면서 성인 한복에 대한 문의가 늘어나기 시작했고, 현재는 신생아복부터 수의까지 모두 손수 제작하게 되었어요.”
퓨전한복의 유행 속에서도 전통 한복을 지키고 싶다
전 대표가 한복을 디자인하면서 가장 중요하게 생각하는 것은 단연 ‘색(色)’이다. 피부톤과 체형의 장단점을 고려할 수 있고 예복과 행사복, 평상복을 결정짓는다. 최근에는 맞춤보다는 대여를 선호하는 고객층이 크게 늘어 대여한복에 중점을 두며 맞춤 한복처럼 예쁘게 착장할 수 있도록 고객의 체형에 어울리게 가봉단계를 거치고 있다. 무엇보다 그녀가 한복을 통해 구현하고 싶은 것은 전통성이다. “물론 소매를 직배래로 제작하거나 저고리 길이를 편안하면서 시대에 걸맞게 제작하려고 노력하죠. 하지만 우리 고유의 한복소재를 수입 원단을 사용한다거나, 기계화하여 대량 생산하거나 외국 노동자들에게 자수와 바느질을 맡기고 싶지는 않아요.” 전통성을 지키려는 그녀의 노력으로 인해 최근에는 외국에 거주하는 교민들의 맞춤 의뢰가 많아졌고, 한국을 방문한 외국인들의 방문도 크게 늘었다. 전희경 대표는 향후 한복 전시회와 강의를 이어가며, 전통한복의 대중화를 위해 의미 있는 역할을 해내고 싶다는 당찬 포부를 밝혔다.

From a few years ago, Hanbok imported from China has been massively distributed at the market in Korea, with targeting at our short but huge traditional holiday. On the other hand, during this New Year’s holiday, the Hanbok made of liberty material from England, which is famous for paisley and flower patterns was so popular despite of its costly price. There are two ways of looking at this situations. One is that we suggested an international way with showing various possibilities of Hanbok and the other is ithe identity gets more ambiguous with Hanbok with unknown nationality.

On a special day, ‘bebedew’ making my baby more brighter
CEO Jeon Hee-Gyeong feels like her heart beating so fast like a girl who has to run a 100m track running whenever she is designing Hanbok, and she has been working on only this for 20 years since she got attracted by Hanbok. Since she was young, she showed her talent for painting. At 11 years old, she had watched a sewing machine, which was one of her mother’s bottom drawers and made clothes for her doll.
“After entering a clothing department in Hanyang University, I went to a Hanbok studio and asked them to let me work without any payment. I had to study and work at the same time, and had to work up to late many times. Then, I used to cry but it was a great chance for me to be able to learn Hanbok slowly and completely from the basic skill.”
When she was studying in the university, she already gained the licenses of western fashion designer and Hanbok and afterwards, she would work as a senior designer at a famous Hanbok shop back then. But, 8 years ago, she was out to be independent to show her own design style and opened the company, ‘bebedew’. Now, her atelier is in Pangyo.
“When I was studying in France, I was interested in baby clothes, so I made this brand, ‘bebedew’. Later, the reputation was gone by viral and I got lots of request of adult Hanbok. Currently, I am making from baby’s Hanbok to the dead’s shroud
I would like to keep the traditional Hanbok in the trend of fusion Hanbok
CEO Jeon is thinking of the most important thing is absolutely ‘color’ while designing. Recently, as many clients want to rent Hanbok not rather customized one, so she is more focusing on that. There is a fitting process so that the client can wear to be fitted looking nicely like a customized Hanbok. Most of all, what she is aiming for via Hanbok is a traditionalism.
“Of course, I am trying to make sleeves a straight line or comfortable and trendy. But, I am using our traditional Hanbok materials or I don’t want to make them by letting a machine or foreign workers stitch.” Due to her efforts to keep the traditionalism, lately, lots of overseas Korean order his Hanbok and foreigners visit her shop quite often. CEO Jeon Hee-Gyeong continues her lectures on Hanbok and its exhibition and expressed that she wants to do something for the popularity of Hanbok with working for a meaningful part.
