유화로 즐기는 전통 민화, 그 속에 담긴 역사의 흔적

김규헌 화가의 근작은 ‘유화로 그려진 전통 민화’라는 새로운 표현력을 담아내고 있다. 오랜 기간 동안 사실적인 그림에서 추상화까지 폭넓은 작품세계를 펼쳐온 그는 현재 서양화를 바탕으로 민화라는 가장 전통적인 작품에 매진하고 있다. 전통이 주는 아름다움과 오방색의 매력, 그리고 해학적인 표현이 민화가 주는 매력이라면 김규헌 작가의 작품은 기본적으로 민화가 주는 즐거움 외에 유화라는 재료의 신선함이 내포되고 있다. 부드럽고 맑은 한국화의 전통 재료가 아닌 유화를 기반으로 자신만의 세계를 표현한 작품은 국내 최초로 시도 돼 관객들에게 창작의 다양성을 보여주고 화단에 새로운 기법의 시작을 알리는 계기로 각광받고 있다. 단순한 한국화 기법의 민화가 아닌 한지, 모래, 제소, 아교 등을 혼합해 한국화로는 표현하기 힘든 독특한 질감을 표현하고 그 투박하고 거친 표현력은 민초적인 느낌으로 다가오기도 한다. “민화가 주는 의미는 남다르죠. 민화 속에는 우리 민족의 얼이 담겨있습니다. 그 속에 표현되는 것은 산, 물, 동물, 나무, 그리고 농사짓는 옛 조상들이 될 수도 있습니다. 그만큼 다양성을 보여주는 동시에 우리가 지내온 역사를 담아내는 것이죠.” 이런 그의 작품은 우리 민화의 도상들 중 ‘십장생’을 주된 소재로 사용한다. 무병장수를 기원하는 해·달·산·강·대나무·소나무·거북·학·사슴·블로초 등의 십장생은 작가의 손에 의해 지상낙원의 새로운 모습으로 다가온다. 그 모습들은 복잡한 우리 삶을 다시 돌아보게 하는 계기를 마련하고 자연적 모습이 주는 평온함과 따뜻한 감정을 느껴보게끔 인도하고 있다. 

그의 작품을 자세히 들여다보면 우리 옛 것에 대한 소중함도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 밭을 가는 농부의 모습이나 지게를 지고 있는 사람의 모습, 길을 걷고 있는 조상들의 모습, 제기를 차고 있는 모습 등이 십장생과 아름다운 오방색을 만나 스토리를 더한다. 단순히 보는 작품이 아닌 스토리를 이해하고 그 스토리 속에 담긴 우리의 역사를 알고 혼을 느낄 수 있는 것이다. 그로인해 보는 이들은 잠시나마 여유롭고 따뜻했던 옛 조상들의 시대를 보며 우리가 어떻게 살아왔는지, 우리의 산과 강, 그리고 하늘이 어떻게 생겼는지를 느끼며 가장 중요한 대한민국의 전통을 깨우칠 수 있다.     

굵직한 표현력으로 시원함을 선보이다

김 작가가 담아내는 화면은 시원함을 느낄 수 있다. 강렬한 오방색을 바탕으로 굵직굵직한 선의 표현력은 시원함을 더한다. 그래서 보는 내내 답답했던 감정을 정리하고 더 화면 속으로 빠져들게 되는 것이 아닐까싶다. 또 하나의 볼거리는 굵직한 표현력 속에 표현되는 작가의 생각이다. 단순한 민화가 아닌 작가의 손맛을 느낄 수 있다. 그의 작품에서는 나뭇잎의 표현은 태양을 상징하는 문양으로 변화하였고 반복적으로 표현되는 도자기 모양은 도자기인 동시에 그 안에 수많은 스토리들을 담아내고 있다. 단순하지만 굵직함 속에서 나오는 독특한 표현력은 그간 볼 수 없는 완벽한 민화의 새로운 시도로 보여 졌고 이는 한국적인 팝아트를 보는 듯 했다.   

서양화에서 시작해 장르와 재료에 구애받지 않고 자신만의 창작 세계를 펼치고 있는 김규헌 화가. 그가 펼치는 한국적인 스토리는 언젠가 더 나아가 국내 관객들을 넘어 세계에 살고 있는 우리 민족에게 더욱 뜻 깊은 감정을 물어넣어 줄 것이라 확신해본다.

Artist Kim Gyu-Heon’a own art world having some stories 

Artist Kim Gyu-Heon’s latest artwork has a new expression, which are traditional folk arts painted by an oil painting. For a long time, he used to show a wide art work from realistic paintings to abstract ones and now, he is concentrating on the very traditional art, which is called as a folk art based on the western painting. Still having some beauty of five colors’ attraction and sarcastic expression are there. Basically, artist Kim Gyu-Heon’s works have some freshness out of materials besides the joy of the folk painting. His own art world based with the oil painting, not by traditional materials of Korean paintings, which are soft and purified was tired out for the first time in Korea and has shown the variety of creativity to the audience. And even, it is showing a new method of art in the art industry as a chance. His works are getting popular more and more. His works used with a mix with Hanji, sand, paste and fish glue so on are expressing some unique textures that Korean paintings cannot show and that rough and tough expression seems to be close to feelings that quite ordinary people feel. 

“It is so different to feel the meaning of the folk art. There is our spirit in the folk art. It could be anything like our ancestors farming the lands, mountains water, animals and trees in the deep description. Like that much, it is showing the variety and at the same time I am showing the history that we went through.” His artworks like that are using ten animals out of the tradition among our folk artworks, mainly. By the artist, the sun, the moon, mountains, bamboos, pine trees, turtles, cranes deer and immortal plants are coming to use as a new appearance of utopia. Those looks make us to recall our complicated lives again as an opportunity and lead us to the peace and warm hearts that nature can give us. 

It is we can feel and know the spirit of our history in the story, not just looking at his works. Due to that, the audience can have a moment to realize how our ancestors lived and our mountains and how rivers and even sky look like at that time by looking at their times, which was relaxing and warm, therefore, we can figure out the tradition of Korea. 

Showing something cool with a bold expression 

Various views painted by artist Kim are based with the five colors in tradition and theses feel the coolness by the expression by bold lines. So, while we look at this arts, we can sort out our complicated feelings and get into his screens, I guess. As another view point, there is the artist’s philosophy living in the deep expression. It is not a just simple folk art but we can feel his touch out of his. From his art works, leaves imply the sun as something changed and the ceramics pattern repeated has lots of stories inside. Humble but there is boldness and we feel the unique expression that we have never seen before, therefore, it has been seen as a new try of the folk art and it feels like a Korean pop-art, so to speak. Artist Kim Gyu-Heon who is showing his own creative world without being disturbed by any genres and materials and begun with the western painting he is. Korean stories he showing is going to give deeply meaningful emotions to Korean people beyond national audience further someday, to be assured.
