천연 소재를 사용한 칠공예품은 고전적 아름다움으로 오랜 사랑을 받아왔다. 수 십년 동안 공예라는 외길만을 걸어온 장인들의 섬세한 손길을 통해 탄생하는 칠공예품은 친환경, 웰빙이라는 현대의 트렌드와 맞물려 그 실용적 가치를 재평가받고 있다. 국제 의전용으로 명성이 높은 ‘청봉옻칠공방’과, 보다 현대적인 영역의 디자인공예소품브랜드 ‘아리지안’을 이끌고 있는 류지안 수석디자이너를 만나 전통 공예의 매력에 대해 분석해 보았다. 

장인의 공예기술이 현대적 디자인을 만나 빛을 발하다

청봉옻칠공방은 1978년 전통 칠기공예 전문가이자 과거 마키에 기법을 국내 칠기 제품에 도입하여 널리 알린 대표 유철현 명인의 호인 청봉(靑奉)을 따서 만든 공방이다. 디자이너와 장인이 아이템 기획에서 디자인, 생산까지 한 팀을 이루어 제품을 제작한다. 제품군으로는 옻칠과 자개, 순금 등 천연소재를 이용한 가구, 함, 선물용품, 주방생활용품, 벽화 등이 있다. 화사하고 밝은 컬러가 돋보이는 화이트 이층장, 투박한 형태를 탈피하여 세련되게 재탄생한 함, 목재에 삼베를 붙여 옻칠과 자개로 표현한 그림 등은 전통 공예를 기법으로 하되 모던함이 돋보인다는 평을 받고 있다. 류지안 수석디자이너는 “하나의 제품이 만들어지기까지는 백골, 옻칠, 자개, 칠화 등 여러 과정을 거치며, 모든 과정은 유기적으로 연결되어 있다. 제품을 개발할 때는 공방의 장인들 뿐 아니라 산업/인테리어/시각디자이너 및 마케터 등 전문 지식을 가진 전문가들이 끊임없이 회의를 하며 형태, 소재, 크기, 제작기법, 패키지 등 최상의 제품을 만들기 위해 많은 의견을 나누며 소통한다.”고 한다. 전시장에는 무형문화재 송방웅 선생, 김환경 선생의 가구, 소품 등 여러 작품들도 전시되어 있는데, 절제된 화려함과 우아함은 아름다운 한국 공예의 절정을 보여준다. 청봉옻칠공방 유철현 대표는 오랜 기간 독일, 밀라노 등 세계 유수의 전시회를 다니며 축적한 다양한 경험과 디자인 감각을 공예에 접목한 소품들을 제작하기 시작했다. 내 외부 모두 옻칠을 하고 칠화 기법으로 그림을 그린 함, 명함함과 필함으로 구성된 데스크세트, 자연의 따뜻함과 세련됨이 묻어나는 찻잔 및 다기세트, 아트상품 등은 공예적 가치를 오롯이 담고 있으면서도 차별화된 디자인과 합리적인 가격으로 기념품 일색이던 공예소품 시장에서 독창적인 제품으로 호평을 받으며 정부기관, 기업체들로부터 꾸준히 사랑받고 있다. 홈페이지 방문이나 전시회 참가 등을 통해 인연을 맺은 고객들에게 예산, 수량 등을 고려한 제품을 선별하여 고객들마다 맞춤 제안을 하고 포장에도 신경을 쓰기에 한번 맺은 고객은 지속적으로 관계를 유지하고 있다.

Craftsman’s industrial arts shine up with modern design

Cheongbong Arts & Crafts is a vacant room established in 1978 naming after the President and craftsman Chulhyun Yoo (with a pseudonym Cheongbong), who, as an expert in traditional natural lacquer ware technology, introduced and publicized the Maki-e technique to domestic lacquer ware products in the past. Yoo Chulhyun, president of Cheongbong Arts and Crafts, started to manufacture small objects in combining diverse experience and design senses, which he had piled up from visiting the world’s leading exhibitions in Germany, Milano, etc. for a long time, with industrial arts.
