자연의 아름다운 속에 펼쳐지는 철새들의 이야기 

정의부 화백 

예부터 많은 작가들이 풍경에 대한 그리움과 자연의 소중함을 친구삼아 다양한 풍경화를 그려오고 있다. 자연이 주는 황홀함과 한 폭의 멋진 풍경화는 복잡하고 지친 우리 삶의 기폭제 같은 역할을 해오며 보는 이들의 마음을 따뜻하게 만들기도 한다. 전국의 수많은 풍경들을 바탕으로 작가 내면의 세계를 투입시키며 그 누구도 표현할 수 없는 자신만의 세계를 그려가고 있는 이가 바로 정의부 화백이다. 월간 파워코리아는 이번 7월호에 50여년간 작품 생활을 하며 자연의 순수함과 따뜻함을 느끼게 해준 정의부 화백의 작품을 만나보았다.

풍경과 어우러지는 작가의 색다른 표현력 

대한민국 풍경화를 대표하는 정의부 화백의 풍경화는 색다른 관점에서 바라봐야 하는 신선함이 담겨있다. 적절히 펼쳐진 자연 속에 작가 내면의 이미지들을 담아내어 마치 현실과 이상의 중간에 있는 듯한 느낌과 흔한 풍경이지만 작가가 표현하는 하나의 새로운 요소들의 조화가 보는 내내 많은 생각과 감정을 느낄 수 있는 역할을 해주고 있었다. 한국적인 자연을 담아내며 대한민국의 아름다움을 강조하고 있는 정의부 화가의 작품은 어느 고장이나 지역을 가더라도 쉽게 마주칠 수 있는 곳으로써 해안이나 포구, 유채꽃이나 벚꽃, 웅장하게 펼쳐진 산의 능선, 그리고 배와 철새 등 흔히 볼 수 있지만 때론 흔히 볼 수 없는 그런 풍경들을 아름다운 유화의 표현력으로 담아내고 있다.

정의부 화백은 철새 작가로 아마 가장 잘 알려져 있을 것이다. 하늘을 가득 메우고 있는 철새 떼들은 양 날개를 퍼덕이며 땅과 하늘의 경계를 오가며 마치 복잡한 우리 내 인생 사를 보여 주듯 힘찬 날개 짓을 하고 있다. 그것은 마치 어지러운 세상에서 잠시나마 도망가고 싶어 하는 우리 인간들의 마음을 표현하며 자연 속으로 빠져들고 싶은 느낌을 주는 것이 아닐까싶다. 자세히 바라보면 철새들은 새로운 의미를 담아내고 있다. 작품에 하늘과 땅의 접점부분을 강조하는 정 화백은 그 경계에서 이루어지는 일련의 운동감을 철새들의 움직임으로 표현한 것이다. 하늘과 땅을 잇기도 하고 하늘을 가로지름으로써 화면에 역동성을 부여하는 철새들은 마치 풍경을 독특한 시각으로 봐라봐 달라고 소리치는 것 같았다. 이런 표현력들은 보는 이들에게 풍경 속에 들어와 있다는 착각을 들게 할 요소로 충분했으며 전체적인 색감과 장면의 구사력은 복잡함을 벗어나 자유롭게 따뜻한 감정을 불어넣어 주고 있었다. 

메모의 습관이 준 소중한 감동의 한 페이지

온 세상의 풍경을 바탕으로 산, 바다, 꽃, 나무한그루 등을 그려내며 한 평생을 작품 활동에만 매진한 정의부 화백은 얼마 전 ‘여로따라 흘러온 화필’이라는 독특한 화문집을 펴내 주목받아 왔다. 지금까지 겪어왔던 모든 일들을 메모해놓아 작품의 이미지들과 함께 직접 미술의 전반적인 지식과 함께 화가로서의 삶, 그리고 삶을 살아가는 노하우를 딱딱하지 않게 재미있게 만들어낸 것이다. 이 한편의 화문집을 읽으면 그의 작품 세계와 함께 그가 살아온 감정들과 미술의 전반적인 상식을 만나볼 수 있어 더욱 신선함이 묻어났다. 더욱 놀라운 것은 150여 페이지 가량이 전부 레이아웃과 콘셉트가 다르다는 사실. 이는 정의부 화가가 직접 디자인 해, 보는 이들에게 지루하지 않고 흥미를 유발하도록 만들었다고 해도 과언이 아니었다. 이 밖에도 원로 화가로서 사회에 귀감이 되는 역할을 하고 싶다며 9월 이색적인 전람회를 계획 중에 있다. 그는 항상 이 세상 모든 일에 감사하면서 살고 있다고 한다. 우선 희수의 나이까지 살게 해 주신 하느님께 감사하고, 그림을 시작한 이래 이런저런 이유로 해서 한 번도 붓을 놓지 않게 해 주신데 대해 감사하고, 또한 주위의 많은 분들과 인연을 맺게 해 주신데 대해 감사하고 있다. 그래서 그동안 고가의 가격이라 구입하지 못했던 정 화백의 작품을 지난 2년 동안 수채화로 작업하여 재료비 수준의 비용으로 판매하거나 기념으로 나누어 드리고 싶은 마음에, 감사와 보은의 뜻인 “나눔의 전시”를 하여, 더 많은 이들에게 좋은 추억을 심어주고 싶다는 의미다. 바로 재능기부를 한다는 뜻이다. 

이처럼 한 평생 붓을 들고 작품에 열중하며 더 완벽한 세계를 만들어 오기 위해 늘 도전을 멈추지 않는 정의부 화백. 앞으로 더욱 의미 있는 활동을 하겠다고 하는 그는 대한민국을 대표하는 진정한 예술인이었다. 

Stories of migratory birds unfolding in the beauty of the natural world 

Many painters have long painted various landscapes, due to their longing for nature and its value. Beautiful landscape paintings act as a catalyst for change in our tiring life, warming the hearts of their viewers. 

It is painter Chung Eui-boo who is creating his own world no one else can depict, projecting his inner world onto countless landscapes throughout the country

In its July issue, the monthly Power Korea could have a chance to enjoy his works, which enable us to feel the purity and warmness of nature.

His different expressiveness mixed with landscapes

The landscape paintings by painter Chung, who represents Korea, contain freshness that should be viewed from a different perspective.

The common landscapes he depicts give us a feeling that we are in between reality and ideals, capturing the images of nature inherent in him, but the harmony between the new elements he portrays in his work allows us to have many thoughts and feelings about them.

His oil paintings, which capture Korean nature and emphasize Korean beauty, are of things you can find easily anywhere in Korea: beaches, harbors, rape flowers, cherry blossoms, grandiose mountain ridges, boats, and migratory birds. 

He may be well known, among others, for his paintings about migratory birds. Filling up the sky, flocks of migratory birds beat their wings energetically, traveling back and forth between the sky and earth, as if to show the complexity of our life. They display our wish to flee even for a while this complicated world, and then make us feel like getting soaked into nature.

The migratory birds in his paintings take on a new meaning, if you take a closer look at them. Emphasizing the nexus of heaven and earth, Chung portrays in his works a series of dynamics occurring at the point of contact, by depicting the movements of them. Connecting heaven and earth or giving dynamics to the picture by crossing across the sky, the migratory birds seem as if to cry out for attention to viewing the landscape from a unique perspective. These impressions are good enough to make viewers believe they are in the landscape. The overall command of colors and scenes shows a free and worm feeling beyond complexity.

The habit of taking notes left him an impressive page. 

Contributing his whole life to his art work, painting mountains, seas, flowers, trees against the backdrop of all landscape in the world, painter Chung has drawn  attention through a collection of his paintings and writings, titled "A paint brush flowing in along the journey." 

In the collection, he conveys the images of his works, general knowledge of the fine arts, and his knowhow on how to live, in such an interesting fashion as  making notes on them of what he has so far experienced.

What's more surprising, each of about 150 pages of the book has different concepts and layouts. It's all because he designed them himself to make them look unboring to the viewers. Besides, as a senior painter, he is planning to hold an unusual exhibition in Sep., saying he wants to be a role model to society.

He said that he lives, always thanking for everything in life: First, he thanks God for his living until 70 years of age; second, for letting him continue his work without a break anyway and becoming associated with many people around.

That is why for the past two years, he has repainted in water color his works that 

are too expensive for people to buy: He is intending to hold an exhibition for sharing as a sign of his gratitude, leaving more people with good memories, which  means he is going to give a talent donation.

Painter Chung Eui-boo has been absorbed in his work for his whole life, to create  a more complete world, never stopping to challenge. Vowing to continue with more meaningful activities, he is a real artist who represents Korea,
