Expansion of human body, executed by repetition and accumulation of sphere

Sculptor Oh, Donghoon

Part.1

Oh was interested in working with human body. He was attracted, while studying at university, to the shapes of clay being made. But he was always thirsty for ideas and experiments. He started to broaden the scope of his work by understanding the properties of materials, and tried something new while he was doing a graduate course. He learned welding in order to summit his works to various open exhibitions and taught himself a 3D programme to grasp the precise measurements and structural understandings of the form. These experiences hugely affected his artworks and helped him to understand about space, three dimension and sculpture and finally he knew what he wanted to create.

Part.2

One day, Oh happened to watch the children on a playground having fun with soap bubbles that were sticking, departing, and spreading each other without any particular forms and this inspired him. He came up with the idea 'Bubble Man' and it became his major work ever since. He thought that the authentic Renaissance Style conception had been already played out and the reinterpretation of the same material was much needed. So he experimented with new forms and expressions about a human body through 'Bubble Man'.

Part.3

His works were made of stainless still balls cut and attached by welding and this explains Oh's desire. He increased its completeness with accurate measures so that each object can be place at the right place using a 3D programme. He developed his idea to overcome the limitation of stainless still so that the bubbles can expand limitlessly into the space. In other words, Oh's  idea of human body and beyond can be actualized by linking, attaching and repeating of the objects, and this can be expressed via direct and active three dimensional sculptures. They are meant to be completed rather in a systematic and deliberate process, however they are seen as natural as if they are unintentional at all when the work is done. And yet, he did a minute study on the objects in the process, and this made his works more thorough.

Part.4

Oh said, by way of experiment on a body's various movements, that his work is about continuous works of all actions that are born and disappeared like raindrops whose wriggling desire was thrown away. Oh communicates with his audience through his artistic inspirations and expressions and as he considers carefully about the works he is going to make next, he is an ongoing artist of our age.

He is participating in Art Basel Hong Kong next year. In recognition of his art works from the world, Oh became an artist of great promise and he is preparing once more for change and progress.
