한국성에 근거한 가장 한국적인 표현 방식

[시간은 우주의 씨앗-한글]

이보석 화가

러시아 상트 뻬쩨르부르그 국립 레핀미술대학에서 수학한 이보석 화가는 문자와 아리랑을 형상화 함으로써 한국성을 근간으로 하고 있는 자신의 철학을 표현해내는데 여념이 없다.

재료 사용에도 한국적 모티브를 적절히 표현하기 위해 한지에 먹을 입혀, 명상과 침묵의 미학을 표현하며 훈민정음이나 한글 자모음의 다양한 변형으로 한국성을 표현한다. 

작가란 시대성과 창작성, 그리고 자신의 철학을 통해 작품으로 세상과 소통을 하는 직업이다. 예술성은 기본 전제조건이며, 철학이 없는 예술가는 생명이 없다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

그런 의미에서 이보석 화가는 유학시절 동안 쌓은 탄탄한 뎃생력과 오랜 기간 고민과 연구를 통해 품게 된 사유의 힘을 통해 자신만의 심미안을 드러내고 있다. 

처음부터 그랬던 것은 아니다. 러시아의 아방가르드 화풍을 유학시절 익히며 자연스럽게 유럽적인 화풍으로 작품을 완성했었지만 머지않아 유럽적인 화풍으로 서양인의 마음을 움직이기에는 무리가 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 

그 후 한국인으로서, 한국적 감각을 통해 한국성을 근간으로 한 작품을 표현해야겠다는 생각을 하게 됐다고 한다. 한국성을 모티브로 서양인에게 다가간다는 것이 그리 쉽지 않았을 터. 하지만 그의 도전은 곧 서양인들의 반응을 통해 성공에 대한 확신으로 바뀌었고, 가장 한국적인 것이 가장 세계적일 수 있다는 가치를 증명하기 시작했다. 

그 후 이보석 화가는 세계로 출근을 하는 국제적인 화가의 반열에 오르게 된다. 

작품의 의미를 보면 우의적 기원이나 사상적 이데올리기에 근거한 한국성에 대한 접근을 볼 수 있다. 이는 전통적 생활방식과 문화를 더욱 한국적이게 표현함으로써 화폭에 재현함은 물론, 설치를 통해 더욱 구체적인 표현방식을 선택했다. 

또, 우리 고유의 문자인 훈민정음이나 신육복의 조선풍속도 패러디 작업 등을 통해 관객에게 지나간 시대와의 소통을 이끌고, 한편으로는 잊혀진 기억의 편린을 상기시키기도 했다. 

더욱이 한글을 통한 기하학적 표현 방법은, 우리에게 익숙한 한글에 대한 또 다른 ‘다름’을 보여주며 단순한 아름다움 그 이상을 표현하고 있다. 

최근에는 한글 자음의 상징성을 회화화해 대형 필름에 빠삐에 꼴레 기법으로 붙이고 반복된 이미지를 병치해 대규모의 설치작업으로 작품을 선보이기도 한다. 

이런 작품의 방향성에 대해 정택영 교수는 “작품의 핵심을 이루는 문자와 기호의 상징성을 통해 예술작품이 정보화 사회, 디지털 노마드 사회에 던지는 소통의 중요성과 가능성이란 화두를 끊임없이 던지는 작가”라고 평했다. 

현재 이보석 화가는 ‘시간은 우주의 씨앗-한글’이라는 주제를 통해 자신만의 조형어법으로 세계와의 소통을 이루고 있다. 

한편, 이보석 화가는 작품 활동 외에도 문화를 통한 세계 교류에도 힘쓰고 있는데, 1996년 창립, 66개국, 300여명의 회원이 가입한 21세기국제창작예술가협회의 회장으로 다양한 활동을 펼쳤으며, 협회의 이름을 바꿔 현재는 (사)세계문화예술인협회의 이사장을 맡아 수년째 국제교류전을 개최하고 있다. 2014년 8월에는 [ 제22회 서울국제미술제] [제18회 국제학술아트포럼] [제1회 세계청소년 미술교류전]을 개최하는데, 총 42개국, 15개국 주한대사, 주한대사 부인, 150여명의 작가가 참여하는 이번 행사의 성공적 개최를 위해 총력을 기울이고 있다.

페인팅, 조각, 세라믹, 설치, 공예 등 5개의 예술장르로 꾸며지는 이번 전시는 조선일보 미술관과 노원구청 전시홀 에서 개최 될 예정이라고 전했다. 

매년 다양한 전시를 통해 문화교류에 열정적인 삶을 펼치고 있는 이보석 화가는 지정기부금 단체인 (사)세계문화예술인협회에 대한 정부의 지원이 절실하며, 지원을 통한 문화의 확대, 문화의 교류, 그로 인해 문화강국 대한민국을 만들기 위해 미력이나마 노력하겠다는 뜻을 전했다. 

이는 작품의 근간을 이루는 한국성에 대한 고민에서 시작해 대한민국을 세계에 알리려는 신념과 의지를 작품 활동과 문화교류 활동을 통해 풀어나가고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 

작가 혼자의 힘보다는 기관, 기업, 후원단체 등 여럿의 관심과 지원이 있을 때 더 확대될 수 있다고 생각한다. 더 많은 사람이 한국을 문화 강국으로 인식하고 지지할 때 대한민국이 문화 선진국으로 가는 길이 열릴 것이라고 판단되며, 초석을 다듬는 작업에 이보석 화가는 자신의 모든 역량을 쏟고 있다.

‘Time is a seed of the universe ? Hangeul’

Artist Lee, Bo-Seok who studied at Refin National Art School in St. Petersburg, Russia is absorbed in expressing her philosophy based with the Korean nature by embodying with letters and Arirang. In the materials, she is using the Chinese ink onto Hanji to express Korean motivation properly to express the beauty of aesthetic of meditation and silence and describing that Korean nature with various shapes with consonants and vowels of Hangeul. 

What the artist job is that artists are communicating with the world by their works throughout the philosophy. The artistic value is a basic premise and artists without philosophy are not much to say they have no life. From that meaning, artist Lee, Bo-Seok is showing her insight by the power of drawing skill and thoughts that she had during the overseas study. 

It was not like that from the beginning. She completed her works into a European style by learning Russia’s avant-garde style of painting but, sooner or later, she realized that it was hard to move western people with only European painting style. Afterwards, as a Korean, she became to think of painting works based on the Korean nature via Korean sense. With a Korean nature motive, it must have been difficult to approach western people. However, her challenge changed into the success reflecting on the reaction of foreigners and started to prove the value of the most Korean thing can be the best thing in the world. After that, artist Lee, Bo-Seok raised to an international artist who is kind of working for the world. When looking at the meaning of her works, you can feel her approach toward Korean nature based on the ideological ideology or an allegorical origin. Including reproducing that in her works, she chose the expression method in more details via installation. Also, she is leading the communication with this generation by working on parodies of Shin, Yoon-Bok’s custom paintings or our traditional language, Hoonminjeongeum and on the other hand, she used to recall a part of forgotten memories. Moreover, geometric method in expression throughout Hangeul is telling more than a just beauty. 

Recently, by picturing of the symbol of consonants of Hangeul, she used to make some gigantic installation works with putting some repeated images and attaching to big films by a way of ‘Papiers Cellos’. 

About her orientation of her works, professor Jeong, Taek-Young criticized, “She is an artist who is constantly throwing a subject as chances and importance of communication into this information society and digital nomad environments via the symbol of letters and signs.” 

On the other hands, artist Lee, Bo-Seok is doing the best to have a global connection by culture and she was doing lots of activities as a president of the 21^st century International Creativity Artists Association and now, the name of it has changed now to ‘International Culture Artist Association Corporation’ and she has been in charge of an executive director. Currently, she has held the international exchange exhibition for years and it is supposed to have ‘the 22^nd Seoul International Art Festival’, ‘the 18^th International Academy Art Forum’, and ‘the 1^st Global Youth Art Exchange Exhibition’ in August 2014. At these events, 42 countries, 15 foreign ambassadors from other countries and their wives and even 150 artists would be making their full efforts for the successful occasions. There are five genres such as painting, sculptor, ceramic, installation and craftwork in art and this event is going to be held at a hall of Nowon Office and the gallery of Chosun-Ilbo. 

Each year, artist Lee, Bo-Seok who has a passionate life for the cultural exchange via various exhibitions said that it needs the support of government so badly for the ‘International Culture Artist Association Corporation’ that is an appointed supporting in finance, expansion of culture by supporting like that, culture exchange and from that, she would like to make Korea in a strong cultural country. This means she is figuring out that they are solving their belief and willingness to let Korea know to the world with starting from Korean nature building up the base in her works throughout the work activity and culture exchange activity. 

She thinks it will be more expanded when organizations, companies and supporting groups are there. When more people support Korea by recognizing as a strong cultural country, the way of Korea to get into an advanced country will be open and about caring about making a foundation, artist Lee, Bo-Seok is putting her everything in that.
