The inner world hidden in an external beauty

Lee Boo-deok, an artist

Artists who rather enjoy much pain for creative work endeavor to show a better artwork to the masses using diverse means at a crossroads between their inner feelings and thoughts at the relevant time. Some express ideas from his external picture, others from his internal picture. In this way, an author must express his thoughts and feelings constantly using diverse subject matters. For the issue of July, Power Korea Monthly met author Lee Boo-deok, who is expressing the external and internal pictures of man and nature through the meeting of overlapping images and things. His work, which contains the two-faced picture of the world, is spurting out its own atmosphere of mystery.

Nature¡¯s wonder and the world¡¯s two-faced picture portrayed by watercolors

Artist Lee Boo-deok¡¯s watercolor includes an intense impression and mainly consists of works that lead us to diverse thoughts. His painting sensitivity starting as he taught his children, though not engaged from childhood, arouses curiosity from spectators for each of works, displaying nature¡¯s wonder and the world¡¯s two-faced picture.

At first, his work expressed the nature itself as we could often see as a child in our surroundings. Portraying unnamed little grasses, flowers and trails he saw on the village hillsides and the most essentials of our life led in those situations, he showed works that enabled the viewers to recollect the nature¡¯s warmth, peace and their younger days and stop to see with nostalgia. Then, one step further from such nature, he came to contain a new nature in the sense that all creation of the universe is the origin of nature and remind one of the universal providence, which was the author¡¯s way of expressing evolving nature rather than an ordinary nature.

His recent series of ¡®Another space¡¯ expresses things through his external feelings containing internal feelings by using dots, whose expression contains humans or the shape of a butterfly including their dream and hope. This uniquely implies that a butterfly in transformation is the picture of our human¡¯s desire, while the inner senses expressed in it are not put into a specific image but act as a subtle attraction to make each seer engage in different thinking. This part is also intended to explain that we humans, too, feel one another to be different persons by viewer and his viewpoint. So the spectators at artist Lee Boo-deok¡¯s works are led to think of the things and images in diverse shapes, following the author¡¯s expectation, which are considered the mystery of humans, nature and everything. In his watercolor painting providing a new meaning for the possible life of things and their essential value by giving unusual visual experience through a meeting between overlapping images and things, you can feel a clear difference between when you see it standing near and at a distance. The shape unseen near the work also expresses the picture of us humans implying that one¡¯s appearance alone cannot reveal his inner world or true heart and holding the author¡¯s emotion that the closer you move on, the more you can see his inner world.

Artist Lee Boo-deok said that his work mingled together even without bothering to mix is in line with the attraction of watercolor that gets joined together through permeation by coloring. Artist Lee Boo-deok always expresses the duplicity of our life and everything of the universe, based on nature. The picture of a new nature in his expression, which serves people as a medium to look back on their life all the time, uniquely makes us think of the internal picture of the world.

Reporter Oh Sang-heon

¡°While painting I feel my heart filled with breathing happiness. Painting job with a brush in my hand makes me really happy with hot flames, cold lumps of ice, worries or desires all broken up in fine, brilliant sunbeams. Painting provides a sweet story for me, which is told in total purity without grime on. I will go on with my path of painting for the remainder of my life to live beautifully with a pure heart in search for true picture of myself.

(Thinking what painting means to me)
