Point of the engraver to inspire soul into the subtle particularity made by nature

Lim Man-sun (Lijo), the only artist in Korea for jujube tree hit by lightening

Nature¡¯s subtle objet from organism recreated into great artwork

On the jujube hit by lightening harder than steel grazes the author¡¯s point of the engraver. It is impossible to carve in with ordinary engraving so the work is done by hitting the edge of a sword used for cutting iron with a hammer. As if to strike orchid with a brush, the author is out to draw the lines of engraver dashing off in a brush, which seems to be breathing alive in combination of the power of Mother Nature and his energy. It is said that jujube hit by lightening was considered a divine utensil from ancient times and carried about with one believing that it could drive out capricious minor demons. If lightening hit a jujube, the electric current of several hundred million volts passes through the water vein in the tree and evaporates the water it contains in a moment. Then, the live jujube splits into pieces, gets burnt black, hardens enough to sink down if floated on the water, and becomes a jujube hit by lightening.

Lim Man-sun is the only author in the country who engages in wood carving with such jujube hit by lightening hardened like steel. 15 years ago, he happened to be encountered with a great jujube hit by lightening over 1300 years old in the neighborhood of flooded area by Imha dam in Andong, Then, for the next 7 years, he manufactured many works by purchasing the dead trees of jujubes hit by lightening laboriously. The jujube hit by lightening obtained by the author with trouble was stronger than steel and it was almost impossible to chisel in the beginning of making work. Only after going through as much as three years of the trial and error breaking the edge used for iron dozens of times, was he able to catch on the knowhow to use the blade of engraver on the jujube hit by lightening. His hard-earned knowhow combined with artistic sense has brought the dead jujube back to life under the engraver of the author for works, in which the vivid subject matter found in nature is recreated as in the raw or through a method coupled with the author¡¯s capability.

In the limelight with a new method of expression as a new possibility for artwork

Born in the family engaged in illustrated poems from a predecessor, author Lim started to paint a picture since the second grade of elementary school and grew up naturally keeping in contact with calligraphy, seal engraving, painting, etc. It was such background of growth that has made him a general artist who has ranged extensively wood carving, joinery, paintings and calligraphic carving, Korean paper relief, clay relief, Chinese ink drawing, pencil portrait, etc. Author Lim who attaches importance to lines shows the excellent technique of brush and engraver, while his pictorial shape, effect of texture, and carving in relief and intaglio both soft and sharp are the highlight of his work. Also, his work is characterized by harmony in strength and weakness and great variability including magnificent mountains and soft flow of waters. The author¡¯s work makes us feel the freedom from primordial constraint that can be shared by humans regardless of races and sexes, so following the point of engraver you will be enchanted by the attraction of his wood carving. Author Lim¡¯s wood carving is also in the limelight overseas, not just domestically.

Head of steering committee for the 10th Gwanghwamun International Art Festival

Also selected as ¡®2010 author of the year¡¯ for industrial arts at Gwanghwamun Art Forum

Author Lim held many group and private exhibitions, 11 times of invitation exhibitions at home and abroad, including <The UK Queen visit of Andong Commemoration Exhibition> <KBS Invitation at Lotte Art Museum head office><Korean Modern Art Invitation by Mayor of Berlin> <Invitation by Mayor of Wien, Austria> <Cheonbuk Global Calligraphy Biennale> <Beijing Olympics Art Fair Invitation> etc. His works are currently housed in many institutions and organizations. Besides, he appeared at an EBS documentary ¡®Culture & Cultured Man>, served as a judge for Korea Art Festival and selected as ¡®Author of the year (Industrial Arts) by Gwanghwamun Art Forum.

In the meantime, author Lim Man-seon is the head of Steering Committee for Gwanghwamun International Art Festival, marking the tenth anniversary, held at Sejong Culture Center Exhibition Hall, Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggye Square from May 29 through July 8 under the theme of ¡®Light, man and door.¡¯ He is also active in helping needy neighbors around as honorary member of Rotary Pyeongchon Club, participating in Academy for the handicapped, crime prevention, educational support program for youth, etc. Even in his busy schedule, author Lim is actively practicing his sharing to take care of needy neighbors. Saying, ¡°I respect those who serve needy neighbors with behavior more than by material means. It would be more difficult,¡± author Lim wished that his works at an exhibition should be enough to expel misfortune and bring good luck to spectators. We expect that author Lim Man-sun will spread his individualistic activity along the nature of art in the future with his unusual humility and creative energy.
