Nurturing Global Leaders

Hong Shin-Jin, President of Gyeonggi English Village Yangpyeong Camp

Korea¡¯s long fever for English education, continues to dominate the domestic education market, is not just a fever anymore. English education has become not an option but a must, not only to get admission to a prestigious school, but to nurture global talent. However, stake holders have different stances on English education. Many in the education circle harshly criticize the methodologies of the private education field. On the other hand, parents cast doubt on the effectiveness of public education. In this circumstance, Gyeonggi English Village Yangpyeong Camp, established by Gyeonggi Province, provides direction to the English education field in Korea. We will meet President Hong Shin-Jin to hear about the current state of English camps in Korea and future plans.

Solution to English Education

With a goal of, "Inspiring Global Leaders" - Gyeonggi English Village Yangpyeong Camp was established in April 2008. Well known as a setting for the drama, ¡°Boys over Flowers¡± the camp boasts beautiful scenery and creates an illusion of being in America; as it resembles Richmond, Virginia, USA. Gyeonggi English Village Yangpyeong Camp is one of the biggest English camps in Korea. Its 55 buildings are comprised of varied facilities such as: educational facilities, condominium-style dormitories, artificial-lawn soccer field, gym, fitness center, swimming pool, squash court, music hall and observatory. The accommodation facilities can house up to 550 students. Thanks to its 24/7 English only environment, quality education, and culture experience programs, students can enjoy a similar educational environment to an overseas study program, while reducing a great amount of the expense.

The oneday experience program for preschoolers helps ease their fear of the English language by combining English education with various hands-on activities. Elementary to high school students can participate in programs ranging from one day programs to four-night-five-day courses. These programs have gained huge attention as alternatives to school field trips. English Village also offers a variety of specialized programs for university and adult students. During summer and winter vacations, customized camps for children whose parents work for governmental organizations and/or large corporations, ended in success. Furthermore, English Village¡¯s main priority is safety, as medical staff reside in the camp and instructors live together with the students in their dormitories. All these measures contribute to, easing of parental concerns about safety, in the wake of sinking of the ferry, Sewol.

At the KAPA International High School in Yangpyeong Camp, students aiming at studying in an American university can be taught by international school teachers with the use of international textbooks. Not only English but also, mathematics, science, social studies, music and physical education, are included in the curriculum. Students can actually learn the same courses which are taught in the States. Many students have already received admission to some prestigious universities such as, UCLA and the University of Michigan.

Korean Wave ? Boost the Tourism Industry

With a vision of fostering future talent, the English Village was founded and has been steadily supported by Gyeonggi Province. However, some have criticized the establishment of the Village with its low profitability.

¡°I agree with them to some extent. However, we have to address this from a long-term perspective. Education determines the future of our country. English is a basic capability which one should be equipped with if they wish to become a party of a global society. In this sense, the success of the Camp should not only be determined by its profitability. Instead, they should monitor whether it correctly implements speaking-oriented advanced education.¡± Hong said.

From 2010, the number of overseas participants has drastically increased. Over 1,500 students from Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Japan and Thailand have visited the camp to learn English. With the, ¡°Korean Wave¡± sweeping the world, it has also drawn multinational tourists. Officials from China and Japan have visited to benchmark their own institutions with the English Village.

As the English camp goes global, chances are, that our students will have more exchanges with their peers from different parts of the world. Thus, it will contribute to attracting more overseas tourists, which is an aim of the government. Convinced of a more positive function of English Village, Hong and other foreign teachers have recently visited the Yangpyeong Education Office to promote a varied perspective on the current situation of English education in Korea.

¡°We have been implementing various programs that not only improve students¡¯ English skills, but also promote leadership and politeness. Our goal is to make our students see the world from a broader perspective through the medium of English and acknowledge cultural differences so that they can ultimately devote themselves to the improvement of mankind.¡±

Playing a pivotal role in education, Gyeonggi English Village Yangpyeong Camp has contributed to nurturing students who will become global leaders. English Village will not stop its mission of achieving this goal.

¡°Breaking from grammar and test-oriented English education, we will make our own voyage into the field of English education. I promise we will continue to develop various English programs and provide quality instruction by providing the best educational environment.¡± Hong said.
