Kim Young-Gul, president of TKBCS (Trade Korea Business Card System) Co., Ltd.

Seeks for <a Happy going together> by building a network of small business owners

Epochal introduction of the 4th money to serve the vitality of small merchants

These days, you can easily see the placards of ¡®Closing big sale¡¯ or ¡®Winding-up sale in 70-80%¡± everywhere on the street. Prolonged economic slump coupled with the recent mishap of Sewol Ferry has driven the shops into low water. In our country, the self-employed are going through much too severe ups and downs. Their survival one year after startup is 70% and three years after only stands at the level of 45%. With retirement of the baby-boomer generation, three is an increasing number of startups for restaurant, etc. but only with a rapid increase in closing because of the unfavorable business environment. So much small business owners are pinched due to their worsening competitiveness. Among others, large enterprises are threatening the small merchants by launching their business of outlet, food products supply, etc. following their discount chain and large-size mart. To make matters worse, e-commerce and home shopping through the Internet, mobile, etc. are expanding in transactions. To help the small merchants in such a struggle unsupported and single-handed, a new innovative transaction system has appeared centering on Kim Young-Gul, president of TKBCS (Trade Korea Business Card System) Co., Ltd.

Will <Extrade Card> bring new relief to small merchants?

¡°If Korean economy is likened to a tree, small merchants are its roots. Unless the root revives, the tree cannot give its flower or fruit.¡±

Though, to avoid a structured and prolonged economic contraction, the government implemented numerous policy supports to foster small merchants, most of them have been loan support such as the Sunshine Loan, ¡°miso finance,¡± etc. Such a support by low-interest loans is easy to give a future vision to small merchants but, in fact, this becomes another ¡®debt.¡¯ What is needed for small merchants at the moment is a short-term liquidity fund of ¡®a few million won.¡¯ Kim Young-gul, president of TKBCS Says, ¡°There is a result of study from the US that securing only 10% of the short-term liquidity fund puts up small merchants¡¯ long-term survival to over 90%.¡± He took out two patents with Extrade Card System that can secure the most urgent cash flow by means of barter among small merchants (No. 10-1229329, 10-1393458).

President Kim clarified his intention of development saying he would go toward a new alternative system for poor small merchants in the future. Extrade Card (barter card) has been developed and patented to help small merchants engaged in sales activity for goods and services with their increase in sales and cash flow. Using the VAN terminal with a credit card of high reliability, this is a new concept of payment system for purchasing and selling goods among listed members through barter, not a cash transaction, to the limits of points given. Extrade card, which has evolved and applied the past barter-system transaction in modern concept, has a wide extent of use because it is possible to transact between one and many, not just confined to a one-to-one barter.

Survival rate dramatically increased through solidarity among small merchants

For instance, if a member running a restaurant has purchased 300,000 won worth of needed ingredients with Extrade card from another member dealing in vegetables, he doesn¡¯t need to pay the money to the vegetable vendor in cash. It is settled up simply by the vegetable vendor or other members buying the 300,000 won worth of the restaurant food with another Extrade card. In this case, the member running a restaurant has paid back the 300,000 won used earlier with the food he is selling, it follows that he settled an account below the cost of purchasing the ingredients, meaning a purchase at maximum over 50% cheaper (based on up to 50% of the cost). Besides, since he didn¡¯t settle the account in cash, he has secured a cash flow of 300,000 won. Thus, the more members running the workplaces in many fields, the more diverse forms of barter are made among many parties, while the more active mutual transaction can reduce the burden of short-term cash flow dramatically. President Kim Young-gul said ¡°Our patented ¡®Extrade card¡¯ is expected to dramatically increase the survival of poor small merchants who have difficulty running the workplace for want of instant short-term liquidity funds in a tough economic situation. This is on the base of barter system and I am sure this method will give overall vitality to economy for the unprivileged by facilitating the flow of money, boosting domestic demand and strengthening the solidarity among small merchants.¡±

Enough feasibility now needs the change of recognition.

Like this, Extrade which is an epochal payment system to boost the activity of small merchants has been developed in Korea. Asked how he got the idea, president Kim Young-gul said, ¡°I got the idea from the US Jewish community where they secure cash flow through barter to keep their commercial rights. The Jewish community is solid and I was impressed that they maintain their community very stably using multilateral barter system.¡± He recollected his difficulty, ¡°This system is operated based on the agreement with small merchants engaged in diverse fields so it has less influence from unpredictable outside factors. At first, I tried this system in LA Korea Town but there was a great want in settlement infrastructure. It was hard to reach an agreement with American banks not to mention the shortage of card terminals.¡± Currently, in our country, card settlement infrastructure has been stably built with the world¡¯s No. 1 usage of credit cards per capita. Discovering the possibilities, President Kim Young-gul decided to introduce the barter payment system into our country where credit card terminals have been well distributed. At an initial stage of introducing the system, it was hard to sign an agreement with VAN Co. but now, after constant efforts, he has achieved agreements over 80 percent. President Kim Young-gul said, ¡°Those who have an understanding of Extrade card system show a positive response unanimously. However, it is true that publicity has not gone well to our expectation because it is hard to show the substance to small merchants themselves. Still, with a recent acceleration of collecting members, I am sure this system is going to boost the revival of small merchants through cases of active transaction among members.¡±

Hopes for its introduction into Korea as the 4th money and then global expansion

Together with these movements, TKBCS Co. is expanding and reorganizing the existing exclusive shopping mall to give support to smooth barter transaction with overseas regions as well as the whole area of the country. For this purpose, the company has applied for foreign patents (PCT/KR2014/000779) on ¡®Settlement system among members and its method¡± in their domestic patent, seeking for a global leader. Besides, he established a company-affiliated institute, obtained ISO certification to feature a venture enterprise, while being ready to carry out CSR (Corporate Social responsibility) by building a continuing education center and job creation support center. President Kim emphasizes, ¡°Reviving small merchants is not a declaratory meaning in words but must secure a specific plans to help small merchants¡¯ economic activities substantially and support their activity efficiently.¡± He also said hopefully, ¡°This can be one alternative. If the merit of this system is transmitted spontaneously by word of mouth, it will be a kind of culture. In this way, an alternative for small merchants¡¯ survival can originate in Korea.¡± It was the moment that he found an opportunity to revive the small merchants and boost transactions through Extrade Card and return substantial benefits to them in such a current. It is earnestly expected that Extrade Card will be an answer to the prayer of small merchants in the country by giving them ¡®a hope for the future.¡¯
