국산 TBM 개발로 세계 시장의 흐름을 주도할 것
전 세계적으로 지하 공간 활용의 필요성과 터널의 대형화 추세로 TBM시공 분야가 크게 성장해 온 반면 국내의 경우 도심교통터널에서의 TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine)시공이 전체의 1% 수준에 그쳐 국산 TBM 개발이 시급하다는 우려의 목소리가 높았다. 하지만 드디어 국내에서도 국산 TBM 1호가 탄생되었다. 이엠코리아(대표이사 강삼수)는 지난 3월 시연회를 갖고 국내 토양에 적합한 한국형 세미쉴드 TBM ‘CKE-1000’을 처음으로 공개해 이목을 집중시켰다. ‘제2회 TBM발전 국산화 포럼’ 행사에 맞춰 공개된 이 제품은 직경 1m급의 소형 세미쉴드 TBM이다. 일반토에서 암반까지 대응할 수 있게 개발됐으며 강력한 분쇄와 빠른 시공능력을 자랑한다고 회사 측은 밝혔다. 이엠코리아(주)의 TBM 사업을 총괄하고 있는 오원섭 사장을 만나 국산 TBM의 개발과정과 향후 수출 전망에 대해 전해 듣는다.
통합기술 구현으로 종합기계 전문 기업으로 성장
1987년 3월에 창립된 동우정밀은 현 이엠코리아(주)의 모태로 오로지 최고품질의 공작기계 부품을 만들겠다는 비전으로 기계 사업에만 전념했었다. 그러다 1997년 갑자기 불어 닥친 IMF의 여파로 회사가 부도위기에 내몰리기도 했으나 전 종업원들이 힘을 합쳐 고비의 순간들을 슬기롭게 극복해나갔다. 강삼수 대표는 “IMF 이후 회사발전을 위해 사업다각화의 필요성을 절실히 느끼게 되었다”면서 “그때부터 10년 단위로 시대의 상황에 맞는 신규 사업을 검토하기로 사업의 전략을 변화시켰다”고 설명했다. 이후 2003년 이엠코리아(주)로 회사명을 바꾸면서 본격적으로 사업을 다각화하였고, 2007년 10월에는 코스닥시장에 상장되면서 더 큰 성장의 발판을 마련하게 되었다.
이엠코리아(주)의 주요사업을 살펴보면 첫 번째는 CNC공작기계 생산으로, 설계, 가공, 조립, 시험, 검사 등 일괄생산체계를 구축하고 35개 기종의 제품을 연간 3,000대 규모로 생산하여 현대위아에 OEM 및 ODM 방식으로 공급하고 있다. 두 번째는 방산/항공 사업으로, 국방품질경영시스템과 AS9100 인증을 보유하여 육상방산장비의 주요부품과 A′ssy, 항공기의 Door Actuator와 Landing Gear 등을 생산 공급하고 있다. 세 번째는 발전설비사업으로 최대 150톤 중량물 가공설비를 보유하고 있으며 발전설비용, 각종 대형 밸브류 등을 생산하고 있다. 네 번째는 2000년대부터 시작한 신규 사업인 환경에너지사업으로, 국내 최초로 수전해 수소스테이션을 대구, 제주, 새만금에 건설해 운영하고 있다. 또한 선박용 밸러스트 수 처리 장치를 개발해 현대중공업에 독점 공급하고 있기도 하다. 이에 오원섭 TBM 사업총괄 사장은 “이엠코리아(주)는 모든 기계 부품의 가공과 조립이 가능한 다양한 생산설비와 시험설비를 보유하고 있다”며 “이런 핵심보유역량을 활용해 향후 10년을 책임질 신규 사업으로 TBM사업에 본격적으로 진출하게 되었다”고 밝혔다. 사람과 긍정의 힘으로 끝없이 도전하는 이엠코리아(주)가 최고 품질의 TBM생산으로 Global TBM 전문기업의 새로운 신화를 써나갈 것이다.
경제성, 안정성, 환경성에서 압도적인 성능의 국산 TBM
TBM의 국산화를 위해 이엠코리아(주)는 2013년 세계적인 세미실드 전문업체인 일본의 Taiko Techs사의 특허 및 제작권, 제작기술, 영업권 인수를 통하여 국내 최초로 TBM 생산체제를 구축하였다. 이후 이엠코리아(주)가 가장 먼저 개발에 돌입한 제품은 직경 1m급의 소형 세미쉴드 TBM으로 설비 크기가 작아 작업공간을 많이 차지하지 않고 고출력 모터와 트리콤 비트를 사용해 경암 구간이 많은 국내지형에 적합한 모델로 평가 받고 있다. 이제품은 안전성, 환경성, 경제성을 갖추고 있어 특히 도심지 공사에 강점을 가지고 있다. 신제품 ‘CKE-1000’에 높은 자신감을 내비친 오원섭 사장은 “이제는 국산 TBM의 생산으로 조달가격이 대폭 낮아질 것”이라 전망하며 “이로써 우리나라도 터널시공의 경쟁력을 높일 수 있도록 터널공사의 TBM 시공률을 50% 이상으로 높여야 한다”고 덧붙였다.
실제로 국내 TBM은 수입 산에 비해 10~20%가량의 낮은 금액으로 유통될 전망인데, 수입에 따른 해상운임 등 부대비용까지 포함한다면 수입산 대비 30%이상의 절감 효과를 볼 수 있다. 또한 국산화에 따라 장비 공급기간이 적게는 1개월에서 수개월씩 단축되는 공기 단축 효과를 누릴 수 있으며, 신속한 A/S로 장비의 가동률을 높이고 A/S 부품의 가격인하로 부가적인 비용도 크게 줄일 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 더불어 TBM 운영요원의 적시공급은 물론 외국인 교용에 따른 문제점을 해결하고, 외국 기술 인력고용에 따른 높은 인건비 지출도 막아줄 것으로 기대된다. 오 사장은 “무엇보다 TBM 관련 사업이 신규로 생겨나 청년 일자리 창출에도 상당부분 기여할 것으로 기대 한다”며 “앞으로도 이엠코리아(주)가 펼치는 신규 사업으로 청년 실업 문제가 조금이나마 해소되기를 바란다”고 밝혔다.
이엠코리아(주)는 그동안의 공로를 인정받아 경영혁신 국무총리상을 수상하였으며 1천만 불 수출탑과 은탑산업훈장을 수여받았다. 또한 기술혁신기업(INNO-BIZ)인증과 함께 국방품질경영시스템을 획득하기도 했다. “올 하반기에는 자주적으로 전·후진이 가능한 세계유일의 ‘파이프 리턴’(Pipe Return) 공법장비를 개발해 중국과 일본, 동남아, 중동 등지에 수출할 것”이라는 포부를 밝힌 오 사장은 “앞으로 구경이 3m 이하인 TBM 모델을 다양화 하고, 이를기반으로 중형과 대형 TBM 시장에도 단계적으로 진출할 예정”이라고 말했다. 이를 위해 이엠코리아(주)는 2014년까지 창원본사 유휴부지 약 20,000㎡에 TBM전문 공장을 짓고 수출을 본격화할 방침이다. 이어서 2016년까지 세계적인 규모인 165,000㎥의 제2 TBM전용 공장을 건설하고 초소형 (구경 450mm)에서 초대형(ø17m급)까지 생산하여 국내공급은 물론 전세계 주요시장에 수출하여 국가경제발전에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다. 따라서 전 세계 주요지역에 이엠코리아(주)와 함께 Vision을 공유하고 동반성장할 유능한 Dealer를 모집한다고 하니 관심있는 업체의 많은 지원을 바란다고 한다. While the TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) construction sector has grown worldwide in line with the need to utilize underground space and the trend of large-sized tunnels, the portion of constructions employing TBM in the nation's city areas remains at a mere 1%.
However, last March, EM Korea held a demonstration and introduced the Korean-type "TBM CKE-1000" for the first time. The product, released for the second Forum on TBM Localization, is a small-sized semi shield with a 1-meter diameter. The company said the machine is well noted for its strong capability to smash fast even bedrock.
Oh Won-sub, who is in charge of TBM business at EM Korea, explains the development process of the localized TBM and outlook for its export.
EM Korea has grown up as a specialized manufacturer of machine tools, through the realization of integrated technology.
Dong-Woo Precision, the matrix of EM Korea, was founded in March, 1987, and devoted wholly to manufacturing top-quality machine tools. During the currency crisis in 1997, the company went almost bankrupt, but could overcome it with the help of all employees.
"After the crisis, I felt very badly the need to diversify our business.", explains representative Kang, "Since then, we have reviewed new business items every ten years."
In 2003, they changed the company's name into EM Korea, and started the diversification of business in earnest, succeeding in being listed on the KOSDAQ in 2007.
EM Korea's main businesses are as follows: First, it manufactures CNC machine tools. It manufactures 3,000 units of 35-type machine tools annually, and provide them for Hyundai Wia Corp by OEM or ODM agreements. Second, they manufacture and supply main parts of defense equipment and aircraft's door actuators and landing gears, as a holder of the Defense Quality Management System and AS9100 certificate. Third, they manufacture generating units, supplying various large-sized valves for power generation. Finally, they started environmental energy business in 2000, building and operating the nation's first water electrolysis hydrogen stations in Daegu, Jeju, and Saemanguem. They also developed a system to treat ballast water for vessels and exclusively supply it to Hyundai Heavy Industry.
Oh Won-sub, president of the TBM business unit at EM Korea, said "We have various production and experiment facilities to process and assemble parts of all machines. Taking advantage of these capabilities, we advanced into the TBM business targeted for the next 10 years." EM Korea will challenge continuously to manufacture top-quality TBMs as a global TBM-specialized producer.
The localized TBM overwhelming in terms of economy, stability, and environment
In order to localize TBM, EM Korea established the country's first TBM production system, through buying from world-class semi-shield producer Taiko Techs the rights to manufacturing and selling its TBM.
Afterward, the first product EM Korea started to develop was a small-sized semi-shield TBM with a one-meter diameter. Not taking up much space and using a high-powering motor and tricone bits, it receives high marks as being suitable especially for constructions in Korean terrain that is mostly composed of hard rock.
President Oh, confident of the newly developed "CKE-1000", expects that with the emergence of the localized TBM, the costs for TBM will decrease sharply. "We must increase the portion of tunnel construction employing TBM to more than 50%, to improve the competitiveness in tunnel constructions." he added.
In fact, the price of the localized TBM is 30% lower than those imported, including ocean freight etc. In addition, accessory costs will also be greatly decreased, due to the shortening of construction time, faster after-sales service, and reduced prices of imported after-sales service parts, all resulting from its localization. It will also allow timely supply of TBM-operating personnel, and prevent high costs for employing foreign labor. "Among others, the emergence of new business related to TBM will help considerably to create jobs for young people." Oh revealed.
Well received for its achievements so far, EM Korea won the Prime Minister Award for Management Renovation, $10-Million-Export-Tower Award, and Silver Industrial Medal by the government. It also earned certificates for Inno-Biz and Defense Quality Management System.
“Later this year, we will develop the world's only pipe return type of semi-shield TBM that can move back and forth, and export them to China, Japan, South East Asia, and the Middle East.", anticipated president Oh, "In the future, we will diversify TBM models with a diameter of less than 3 meters, and build on them to advance into middle- and large-sized TBM markets.
To achieve this end, EM Korea will construct by 2014 in Changwon a TBM-specialized factory, spanning 20,000㎡, and start to export them in earnest. The next step is to construct a second TBM-specialized factory, spanning 165,000㎥. They will manufacture super-mini(a 450mm diameter) to super-large scale(a ø17m diameter) TBMs and export them to the markets worldwide, let alone the domestic market.
