He upgraded the level of music played by the tuba

The biggest of all brass wind instruments, the tuba covers the lowest notes in orchestra or brass band music, fascinating audiences with its imposing tone.

The tuba, playing bass of the brass wind section, acts as a pillar to a piece of music, rather than showing off its color. But in Korea which does not have yet a large fan base for classical music, not many people can tell from the sounds and names of numerous brass instruments.

In the meantime, a musician is drawing the attention of the public, holding tuba solo recitals at his own expenses to play on the tuba popular music and movie OSTs.  The person is Mr. Heo Jae-young, the nation's first-generation tubist and professor of music at Chung-ang University.

He could not give up his path to a tubist, in spite of his worsening health.

Fond of music from his childhood, prof. Heo was a boy who preferred singing to playing musical instruments. Determined to become a singer, he sang in the choir in high school, but he came to lose all interest in singing in choir, because he could not sing solo.

Then, he happened to play a side drum on the school orchestra, opening his eyes to classical music. Since then, he had practiced the sousaphone, an improvement on the tuba, to enter college, and he started his career in earnest as a tubist.

After graduating from the music department at Chung-ang University and playing with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, he went to Koeln, Germany. There, he graduated from Koeln National Music College, and completed the conductor's course at Brno Music Institute in Czech Republic.

In Korea, he led the Korea Tuba Association for some ten years, played at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Brass Quintet, Korea Festival Ensemble, etc, and now he plays at the Korean Brass Quintet. He also conducts the Seoul Tuba Ensemble and Chung-Ang University's Brass Ensemble.

When he returned to Korea, he could not find an instructor who could teach him. So, he had to practice all by himself, and in doing so, his front tooth fell out due to excessive amount of practice. After overcoming the long slump, however, he suffered from bad tinnitus.

He says ¡°It was hard to play music, but what was worse, I suffered from insomnia due to the tinnitus too. Then, I even felt like killing myself, though I could survive it with the help of music." In fact, he is still suffering from the bad tinnitus.

Getting over all these bitter experiences in life, prof. Heo has held successfully 28 tuba solo recitals since the country's first in 1993. Actually, he is a world-class tubist enough for the world's three prestigious tuba teams to offer him to become their members.

As a tubist, he played with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Hyup Strings, Seoul Muse Flutes, Korean Brass Ensemble, Rumania Oltenia Philharmonic Orchestra, Bulagaria Pazardjik Symphony Orchestra, Jeju-Seogui-po Brass Band. As an euphonium player, he played with the Seoul Philharmonic's wind orchestra, Korean Army Headquarters' military band, Gyungbuk Wind Ensemble, and Korea Brass Ensemble.

Methodology acquired through continuous research

Having nurtured younger-generation musicians at the Korea National University of Arts, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University, etc, he now serves as a professor of orchestra department at his alma mater Chung-ang University.

¡°When I studied in college, it was a wasteland for tuba. There was no teacher who could exclusively teach me." He said. Since then, his whole life has been devoted to repeated practice on the tuba, but after passing 20 years like that, he found out he didn't made the advance, proportionate to his efforts. He started to feel the responsibility for renovating the paradigm of musical teaching.

"In order for students and professional players of tuba to compete on the world stage, first, we must provide them with methodical support. Instead of spending time aimlessly learning techniques, they must understand the scientific mechanisms of all instruments and, at the same time, learn to play them systematically by applying the playing technique and respiration method." Heo explained.

This innovative idea of his has already produced results: Three years ago, one of his euphonium-majored students achieved a prize at an international brass competition. Four of his students have already won prizes at international concours, proving his excellent ability as a teacher.

Recognized for these deeds, prof. Heo received the "Korea Award for the Contribution to Society" from Sisa Today in 2010. In 2012, he won the 28th Seoul Music Grate Pritz, awarded by the Korea Music Critics Association. In 2008, he was selected as the best music professor in the category of research.

Prof. Heo Jae-young, saying he wants to publicize more to the public about the tuba and less-known euphonium, concluded he wishes social and institutional environments to be created to popularize classical music in Korea.
