돌돌 말아 붙인 재료의 특징으로 

펼쳐 내는 이병례의 미학의 의미

예술이라는 것이 일반화의 특별함을 이룰 수도 있고, 특별함의 일반화를 이룰 수도 있을 것이다. 이병례의 작업은 전자에 가깝다. 우리가 늘 볼 수 있는 신문, 잡지, 한지 등을 소재로 사용해 회화의 틀을 좀 더 확대시키고 특별하게 표현한 쪽이다. 

우연한 기회에 종이 작업을 시작하게 됐지만 지난 10년 동안 그에게 말아 붙인 종이 작업은 화가로서 깊은 철학을 일깨우는데 큰 역할을 했다.

그는 작가노트에서 모든 작가들도 마찬가지겠지만 끈기와 인내력과 최대한의 집중력이 필요한 작업이라고 설명하며, 자기 자신과의 싸움이었다고 회상한다. 또, 신문지, 한지 등을 커팅해서 하나하나 화면에 붙여가면서 점에서 선으로 그리고 면이 된다고 설명했다. 더불어 촘촘히 말리고 또 말고 붙여서 평평한 표면에 오톨도톨한 촉감을 구성하고, 시각에서 촉각으로 감각적 전이를 느낄 수 있다고 설명했다. 

이병례의 작품을 들여다보면 작가노트에서 그가 썼던 감정이 고스란히 담겨져 있다. 미리 한지를 말아 크기별, 색깔별, 두께별로 분류해놓고 바탕색을 완성해 놓은 캔버스 위에 올려 자신이 생각해 놓은 높이대로 커팅을 한다. 이 커팅 된 한지는 작품의 중심을 잡기도 하고, 작품의 소재로 사용되었지만 주제가 되기도 한다. 또, 마티에르와 같은 입체감의 표현이기도 하지만 그 와는 좀 차별되는 특별한 원근감을 주기도 한다. 

일반적인 평면회화에서 벗어나 표현주의적인 화면을 다양하게 보여주려던 화가의 흔적을 엿볼 수 있는 부분이다.

처음 이와 비슷한 작업을 시작할 당시에는 잡지를 말아 지금과는 다르게 캔버스에 눕혀 붙이는 작업에 열중했다. 길쭉하게 말아 놓은 잡지는 말린 부분마다 각기 다른 그림과 글자로 가득했기 때문에 같은 재료에서 ‘다름’의 미학을 찾는데 충분한 소재였다. 이 소재 위에 한번더 페인팅을 올려 작가가 추구했던 작품의 방향성을 찾는 시간이라고 이병례는 회상했다. 그 후 신문을 말아 작업을 했다. 당시에는 빈 공간이 거의 남지 않는 채우는 미학을 표현해왔고, 돌돌 말린 신문마다 각기 다른 색을 뿜어내는 매력이 작품의 힘을 더하는 그러한 작업이었다. 

지금 하는 작업이 과거의 작업과 많이 달라지진 않았다. 그저 반대의 개념과 유사의 개념이 입혀진 것으로 생각하면 될 것이다. 반대의 개념은 채우는 미학에서 비움의 미학으로 변했다는 것이고, 유사의 개념은 신문, 잡지를 소재로 사용하던 것이 한지를 사용한 다는 것이다. 또, 바탕색을 단일색으로 꽉 채운 뒤 신문이나 잡지를 커팅해 작업을 마무리 했다면, 지금은 블루와 레드로 바탕색의 대부분을 채우고 또 다른 색을 가미해 바탕색에 힘을 더했다는 것이다.

한 가지 더, 과거의 작품은 우주에서 내려다 본 지구의 모습이나 높은 상공에서 내려다본 땅의 한 부분이었다면 지금은 바다의 형상, 즉, 소용돌이, 파도, 물결 등을 표현하는 것으로 조금 변한 것을 볼 수 있다.  

하지만 작가는 자신의 의도를 관객들이 알아주기에 급급하지 않는다. 그저 느끼는 그대로 평가해줬으면 하는 것이 작가의 의도라고 볼 수 있다. 자신 역시 작품을 할 때 느끼는 감정 그대로를 작품에 옮겼고, 의도에 대한 강요는 작품을 이해하는데 한계를 둘 수 있다는 생각에서다. 

의미에 집착하지 않고, 자신의 감정을 미학적 표현기법으로 솔직히 표출했다는 점에서 현대미학의 틀에 부합하는 작가의 심미안을 충분히 표현해 내고 있다고 평가하고 싶다.

Art could make it possible to be special from generalization and to be a generalization from being special. Artist Lee, Byung-Lae’s work is closer to the former. He is using very popular materials like newspapers, magazines and Hanji that we see every day to magnify the frame of the painting and to express them in extraordinary ways. He started the paper work by chance but he has been being a big part of realizing the deep philosophy as a painter from working on rolling the paper materials for last 10 years. According to his artist note, he explained the work he is doing requires the most extreme patience and endurance, even though he knows every artist does the best with those personalities. By that, he recalled every work was a fight with him. Also, he explained dots made by newspapers and Hanji in the beginning is going to be lines and then, become sides by attaching each of rolled papers on his own. Besides, he talked about the process that is completed by being rolled and being dry completely and densely on the flat side so as to make some hard and lumpy texture and to feel the transfer in emotions from sense of vision to sense of touch. 

When you look into the artist Lee, Byung-Lae’s works, we exactly feel his feelings that he wrote down in his artist note. He is rolling Hanji papers in advance and dividing them by size, color and thickness and then, he puts them on the canvas, which is already finished with ground colors. Next, he is cutting them by his idea or thought whatever he wants in size or height. The cut Hanji can make the balance of the work or can be a subject, despite of being used as a material. And, it is a dimensional process such as ‘mati?re’, but it can give a special far and close feeling as well. It is a part to peek at this artist is trying to show expressive screens in various ways out of general flat paintings. 

When he started working like that from the beginning, he rolled magazine papers and was more focused on lying down and attaching them with a different way from now. It was enough to find the esthetic side of difference from one material, because it was filled with different images and letters. Later, he did painting job again onto them and it was time for seeking for the direction of work, according to Lee, Byung-Lae’s. Afterwards, he used paper of newspapers and rolled them up. At that time, there was no space since he was putting them all to express the esthetic view and it was a kind of work for him to add some different colors from newspaper rolls to give more attraction. His current work is not so different from what he did in the past. It might be better think there are one opposition and the other similarity at the same time. The concept of the opposition has changed into the esthetic of making some space and the other concept of similarity means he is using Hanji now. 

In addition, he used to finish the work by cutting the rolled newspaper or magazine papers after filling with one color in the base, but he is currently filling up the most base with blue or red and then, he puts another color on it since he wants to give more powerful energy on the base. There is one more thing. His past works were usually a part of lands from the view out of the earth or from the sky, but he has been changing more with whirlpool, wave and surf in expression. 

However, the artist is never hurried up to wait for the audience to know his purpose as soon as possible. He just hopes that they see and feel from his art works. He is also delivering his feelings into the canvas in itself, because the force by is can have a limit of understanding the artworks. Since he is really honest with himself to express with the esthetic method, without being addicted to the meaning of it, I would like to say that he expresses his insight of the view enough.
