Lee Soon-jong, artist

Expresses nature as an unending topic for an artist

Pure art is retreating preposterously compared to popular art developed dramatically. Especially, in the people¡¯s lacking interest and the government¡¯s insufficient support, there is less and less applicants for pure art, with department of art in the university facing a crisis for survival. For instance, on 24th, Seowon University prepared a plan for restructuring by integrating departments of art and beauty and received a shower of protest from students, their parents and graduates. The alumni association of Seowon art department demanded, ¡°The school stop the one-sided restructuring and withdraw the abolition of art department.¡± Though there seems to be no more room in Korea for pure art in the convenient logic of economy, we should not ignore the endeavor of artists who are making the future of pure art with incessant spirit of experiments. We met author Lee Soon-jong, who has been devoted to expressing her aesthetic artwork on nature and is now maximizing artistry with a new technique of expression, to learn about the path of our pure art to go.

Period of time to be immersed in depth rather the expansion of subject matter

Rather than reconstructing natural shape artificially or rearranging it abstractly, artist Lee Soon-jong has been making efforts to reach the depth of its immanence. Her unique impressive touches and intense contrast of colors has provided both an individualistic and mature sense of stability. The weight sensation and energy presented by overlapping mixed colors was enough to manifest its unusual aura in any space of display or in any exhibition of concept. So stopping before and looking into her work leads one to the awesomeness of beautiful nature expressed through the author¡¯s eyes. ¡°Nature is nothing more than a background for modern people who are too busy to look up at the sky even once. For me, however, rocks scattered on the roadside, a tree keeping its position all the time, flowers out and gone for each season and nameless grasses all become the subject matter. Though expressive methods of work may vary, my permanent topic is nature itself.¡± Her philosophy of work has been displayed more intensely in the series of wild flowers completed when she was surveying the mountains and streams of the whole country as a member of <Seoul sketching club>. Her works such as <White peony>, <dandelion>, <chrysanthemum>, etc. have grasped the author¡¯s pure aesthetic quality already concerted with nature. Author Lee¡¯s such firm artwork has entered a new situation as she moved to Inje, Gangwon-do.

<Pink shoes> in original style that has opened a new phase for the author¡¯s life

Little changes began to occur to author Lee who had been preparing for her second life as an author by opening ¡®Lee Soon-jong Gallery¡¯ after coming down to Inje. Looking at beautiful scenery of nature, touching earth personally by hand and leaving her heart with the fresh wind started to arouse in her work diverse emotions about real nature so soon.

She showed a very unique work system completed through many experiments. First, author Lee put her heart and soul into the work of making the foundation before an oil painting. Grind the woodcut softly with sandpaper, apply oil paint on it, and mix dark earth for making Buncheong porcelain and bright earth for making white porcelain in proper proportion on yellow soil to put back on the woodcut. If left dry in this condition, it gives a bizarre split unpredictable even by the author and, on this foundation completed through this series of processes she starts her oil painting. However, as the luminosity of earthly yellow is strongest in the picture, it was the limitation that real yellow soil was strong, too. ¡°After experiments on whether many flowers combined could overcome the true color sense of yellow soil, I found only cockscomb mixes well with yellow soil among ¡°Korean¡± flowers into possible equal expression. Cockscomb was a brave and strong flower as its flower language suggests and I came to title it as pink shoes because the completed picture felt like a pink shoe.¡± Now she has succeeded in obtaining raw material itself for painting from nature, not a natural subject matter.

In the meantime, artist Lee is active in forming the art infrastructure of Inje region, too. For this purpose, she is carrying out art instruction at the local culture center and schools to rear future artists while preparing a healing time for ordinary people through an act of painting pictures. Besides, opening the atelier of ¡®Lee Soon-jong Gallery,¡¯ she is planning one or two times of group exhibition by connecting to nationwide painting groups. ¡°I couldn¡¯t have made those works if I had kept a city life. I wish the spectators would be simply reminded of their native town from my work. I will keep on the work that anyone could relieve their homesickness even for a while as a means to breathe together with people.¡± Author Lee¡¯s <Pink shoes> series will have an exhibition next year at Insa-dong to meet ordinary viewers for the first time.
